The 12 winners will not only have their masterpiece published in the calendar, they'll also win a $250 gift voucher each plus $500 for their school. Students can enter up until June 25 with winners to be announced in September. Contact your local State Government representative for submission details.

Tawny frogmouth Podargus strigoides With their nocturnal habit and owl like appearance, tawny frogmouths are often confused with owls, but are actually related to the nightjars. Their feet are weak and lack the curved talons of owls.

The general plumage of the tawny frogmouth is silver grey, slightly paler below, streaked and mottled with black and rufous. A second plumage phase also occurs, with birds being russet red. The eye is yellow in both forms, and the wide, heavy bill is olive grey to blackish. South eastern birds are larger than birds from the north. During the day, they perch on tree branches, appearing as part of the tree.

The tawny frogmouth can be observed in almost any habitat type (except the denser rainforests and treeless deserts), including heath, forest and woodlands, urban and rural areas.

The tawny frogmouth is found throughout Australia, including Tasmania.

Melaleuca quinquenervia is probably the most familiar of the ‘paperbarks’ in eastern Australia. It is a very common species along coastal streams and swamps and is widely cultivated. It is a small to medium sized tree which can reach 25 metres but is usually up to 12 metres in cultivation. The bark is persistent and develops a multi layered papery habit. The bark can be easily peeled off in sheets. The leaves are flat and leathery, about 70mm x 20mm with 5 distinctive longitudinal veins. Flowers appear as short bottlebrush spikes, creamy white in colour and 50mm long. M. quinquenervia is hardy in a range of climates and is particularly useful for poorly drained sites. It is an attractive tree which is very useful for landscaping. The white, papery trunk is particularly appealing. Birds are attracted to the nectar in the flowers.

All proceeds go to the Mapleton State School P&C. All your donations would be gratefully received and will go towards resources for our school and students.
