POP & ELECTRO - POP CULTURE

By shevonne Merchant

Page 2: Pop and eletro pop culture

With in my AS media I have researched about the history and the origin of Pop music and within the A2 I have explored further in depth about the social tribes and how music tribes and videos are an influence on social tribe style and behaviour.

Knowing the history the term is abbreviated for ‘popular’ which implies the music targets the social tribe of youths. And looking more into how the sound, rhythm of the music including the music videos influence the behaviour of a lover of Pop. The common themes that are seen in a Pop music is about relationships; Justin Bieber is know for his songs of love of being a relationship with hits like’ ‘Baby’, ‘Mistletoe’ and ‘Somebody to love’. Artist like Katy Perry sings songs about relations like Teenage Dream’ and ‘One that got away’. The other theme that is demonstrates in a Pop video is the care-free party life, and with that there is an element of disco or electro-pop incorporated with and artist like Ke$ha produce songs like ‘Tik Tok’ and ‘We r who we r’ . Within these video they create the party scene with flashing lights, flashy, coolest and hip fashion – and because artist like Ke$ha wear this the audience follow and try to imitated the party –like feel.

Therefore, since my chosen song is Pop yet does hold the electro-pop component, and share that care-free life factor of money and fame I would need to look and investigate the code and conventions of other music videos so that my own can meet it’ criteria.

American artist Katy Perry is quite known for her of Pop music and if you look to your left a print screen shot of her 2011 summer time song California Girls. From this print screen is a perfect example of how Katy represent the Pop culture, as Pop is all about the bright vibrant colours and an element of girly, so here we see Katy portraying that with the colours of Pink, Purple and white with her hair, costume, setting and Make-up.

Christina Million made her entre to the music world in 2002 with her hit Am to Pm. From this print screen we see the vivacious of her costume and also the choreographers again portray the element of Pop, youth having young dancers and the choice of colours such as red, blue, pink and emerald. Also the style of the outfits that are presented in the video can also be advertise to the target audience having an influence on how and what it’s audience would dress public.

British music star Pixie Lotte known for her music tribe of pop and electro pop and her 2010 hit song Boys and Girls, an up-tempo electro pop song that follows a combination of a retro-styled beat represent that.

From all of the screen shots we a sequence of dance routines which matches with the idea of electro –pop as the beats , and techno sounds are created to make an audience dance, therefore this would lead me to think about adding a dance routing into my video.

To uphold that Pop or electro- Pop culture with the flashy clothing, and accessories as from the second shot we see Pixie in a leather jacket with added gold accessories on the shoulders and black sun-glasses.

The screen shot about again represent the culture with the glam glittery look which informs me that when planning my video in order to meet the convections to this genre the first key ingredient is the costume as throughout all the examples from these videos the costumes are the most important element for an audience to detect what music genre it is.

American, singer Kesha made her singing entrance in 2008 with the catchy tune Tik Tok that put her at number 1#. Just like the artist that I am trying to Portray Dev, Kesha has the unique vocal style of ‘sing-talk’, the use of auto -tune and to made another comparison fellows the music tribe of Pop and the hybrid electro –pop.

Within her 2010 song ‘We r who we r’ created to celebrate everyone individuality, quirky or eccentric. Within the video Kesha celebrates her with the use of the costumes has due to the her music genre of electro- pop which is to be describe as very techno, disco and glam as the purpose on it is to make an audience want to dance. Therefore, here we see print screens from the video which display that glam and eccentric qualities.

The first shot is the make-up with strips of gold material on her eye-brows , and the large gold crucifix as jewellery. The second show again the make-up and odd fashion statement with the blue glitter surrounding the eyes and the bright glittery martial that represents the jewellery that is coiled around her fingers. With all these factors would aid me to incorporate this into my music video.

Stacey Ann Ferguson or more commonly known as Fergie, the female vocals from the popular U.S band The Black Eyed Peas, went solo in 2007, and this print screen from the video ‘Clumsy’, even though the song holds a different meaning to my chosen song I have selected this shot because, of the use of the lighting made by the paparazzi in the video and from her facial express shows she is sulking it in. Taking the idea of the use of the lighting would aid me within my music video.

American Girl – Pop group The Pussycat Dolls or PCD for abbreviation, show the theme of wanting fame through the video ‘When I grow up’ just like how I ’am trying to portray in my music video ‘Fireball’. To the left we see three of the group members displaying their jewellery, fashion and the expensive gear that come with the fame.
