Child Rights: A Gist

The Convention on the Rights of the Child defines basic rights of children covering multiple needs and issues. India endorsed it on December 11, 1992.

Rights of children………

When Children are too young to care for themselves, parents or substitutes are required to provide basic requirements to children

The right to Education:

50% of Indian children aged 6-18 do not go to school Dropout rates increase alarmingly in class III to V, its 50% for boys, 58% for girls. • Free and Compulsory• To become useful member of society

The right to Expression

Every child has a right to express himself freely in which ever way he likes.

Majority of children however are exploited by their elders and not allowed to express.

The right to Information:

Every child has a right to know his basic rights and his position in the society.

The right to Nutrition

More than 50% of India's children are malnourished.

one in every five adolescent boys is malnourished,

one in every two girls is undernourished.

The right to Health & Care;

58% of <2 years-not fully vaccinated. 24% of these - no vaccination. 60% of children-anemic. 95 in 1000 children die before fifth

birthday. 70 in 1000 children die before first

birthday.

The right to protection from Exploitation

children were sent to work by compulsion and not by choice,

Poor and bonded families often "sell" their children to contractors who promise lucrative jobs in the cities.

The right to protection from Neglect

Every child has a right to lead a well protected and secure life away from neglect.

children working under exploitative and inhuman conditions get neglected badly.

The right to Development

Every child has the right to development - child explore her/his full potential.

Unfavourable living conditions - prevents growing in a free and uninhibited way.

The right to Recreation

Every child has a right to spend some time on recreational pursuits - sports, entertainment and hobbies to explore and develop.

The right to Name & Nationality child has a right to identify himself

with a nation.

The right to Survival

Of the 12 million girls -3 million do not see their fifteenth birthday

1 million of them are unable to survive even their first birthday.

Every sixth girl child's death is due to gender discrimination.

Right to disaster relief

The Right to be among first to receive relief at times of disaster.

Rights of Hospitalized child

The National Association for the Welfare of Childrens in Hospital (NAWCH) seated in London approved and declared the rights of hospitalized children on 25 February 1992.

Children should only be admitted to the hospital if the care they need cannot be provided equally in domestic treatment or in outpatient form.

Children and their parents have right to take decision regarding the medical care provided to them.

the parents are assisted and encouraged to stay with the child in the hospital- to participate in the care

Children must be treated tactfully and with understanding and their privacy must be respected at all times.

Children must receive the care of adequately trained staff - fully aware of physical and emotional

needs of children of any age group.
