General informationPolteq offers an extensive training program in software testing, aimed at different target groups such as (senior) test engineers, agile testers, test coordinators, test consultants and test managers. Training is divided into certification training, practical training, basic training, technical training and specialized topics.

Certification trainingWe offer several courses that lead to an internationally recognized certificate and are accredited to provide courses for any level of ISTQB and TMap® certification. In addition, our training department is accredited to provide iSQI training for e.g. Certified Agile Tester (CAT), Certified Agile Essentials, CMAP Mobile App Testing, Certified Agile Business Analysis (CABA) and IREB Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering. Practical trainingThe practical courses we offer are aimed in particular at acquiring practical experience. This course provides a general introduction to software testing. The main objective is to prepare participants for passing the multiple-choice ISTQB Foundation examination. The key topics are: the added value of testing to the business, its relationship to the development process and the fundamentals of a structured testing process. In addition to the theory, practice examination questions are included in the course. The course will conclude with the ISTQB Foundation examination.

The ISTQB Certifi cate Foundation Level (CTFL) is intended for professionals who want to gain practical know-ledge of the fundamental concepts of software testing. ISTQB Advanced

Advanced level of ISTQB certifi cation is designed for experienced testers who want to expand and improve their knowledge in the given fi eld. Certifi cation consists of three different modules which all fi nish up with an (multi choice) exam.

1. ISTQB Advanced Level Test Manager (fi ve days) This training prepares the participants to obtain the ISTQB Advanced Test Manager certifi cate. After following

the training participants will be able to set up a test project using proper risk estimations and will know how to lead the project in line with customer’s policies and strategy. They will be able to create a team to successfully execute test projects within a given framework and will manage to communicate properly with all stakeholders. Participants will also gain full insight of the test manager’s leading role within test process improvement on all levels.

2. ISTQB Advanced Level Test Analyst (4 days) This training prepares the participants to obtain the ISTQB Advanced Level Test Analyst certifi cate. After fol-

lowing the training participants will be able to design and implement functional (black box) tests aligned with existing development approach and risk analyses results. ISTQB Advanced Level Test Analyst training focuses on functionality, usability and user-friendliness.

3. ISTQB Advanced Level Technical Test Analyst (3 days) This training prepares the participants to obtain the ISTQB Advanced Level Technical Test Analyst certifi cate.

After following the training participants will be able to design and implement structural (white box) tests which emphasize the non-functional quality attributes such as performance, security, and maintainability. The course takes participants through the life cycle of an Agile project from release planning and writing user stories to the iteration review (showcase) and retrospective. This course focuses on the key principles and provides practical suggestions for applying these.

iSQI Certifi ed Agile Tester (CAT)

This fi ve-day course provides an understanding of the principles of the Agile methodology and gives testers a sound foundation to get started in Agile environments. The theory will be covered over the fi rst four days followed by an examination on the fi fth day.

The theory is supported by practical assignments to ensure that it is understood and can be applied. At the end of the course, participants will know the principles behind the Agile approach to software development and they will be able to identify the differences between the role of testers in Agile projects and the role of testers in other projects. An additional objective is to be able to help an Agile team focus on testing and also to learn to deal with challenges from other disciplines, inside and outside the team. The course will also focus on the social skills of the tester.

The course and the trainer are iSQI (International Software Quality Institute) accredited to an international standard. For the practical part of this course, participants should bring a laptop that is bootable via USB.

SCRUM Game

This workshop is designed to allow participants to experience the benefits and disadvantages of testing within SCRUM.

Participants are put in a “real life” SCRUM testing case where a product has to be tested through a number of iterations to

meet certain quality requirements.

The main part of the training consists of executing SCRUM testing iterations based on User Stories. During the iterations the

participants learn to advise to the Product Owner whether or not to take a product, especially developed for this course,

into production.

Throughout the workshop we dedicate time to discuss the theoretical basis. We discuss the fundamentals of Agile and talk

about a specific method (SCRUM) to ensure testing is managed properly in an Agile context. On top of this we discuss the

principle of “business value”, prioritization and practices that make testing an efficient and value adding activity in an Agile

environment.

For this training we choose a competitive structure where you win through working with SCRUM methodology and identify-

ing issues in the product. The best SCRUM team gets a prize. It is a fun and interactive training which brings something new

to every participant and is immediately useful in every day work.

Context Driven Testing

It is a known fact that tests should be executed correctly and thoroughly under any circumstances. Therefore testers are

required to achieve accurate results regardless of the specific context. The tester should be able to use the context he / she

is working with and transform it into an effective test approach, efficient test techniques and appropriate testing documen-

tation. Context factors of high importance include development methodology (agile, waterfall, but also ad-hoc), available

time and risks associated with the product.

During the one-day training Context Driven Testing you learn these insights and skills in two phases. In the first part the par-

ticipants get to know and experience limitations and weaknesses of process-oriented testing, as well as learn to recognize

the different aspects of the given context they have to work with.

In the second part they are taught new skills and means to ensure they can handle every context. Participants learn explo-

ratory testing and session-based test management, mind mapping and the benefits and use of heuristics.

The Context Driven Testing course is designed for testers, test coordinators and test managers but also for other IT profes-

TI4LowBudget: test improvement in small and medium sized organizations

Test Process Improvement (TPI) actions are often initiated and executed at a high level in an organization, i.e. outside the influence of testers and test teams. A common complaint is that it takes a long time to implement improvements. One of the problems of popular test improvement models like TPI® Next and TMMi® is that they require formal assessments, resul-ting in improvement suggestions with a long lead time and significant effort. For a lot of smaller organizations TPI® Next or TMMi® are not suitable and require too much effort.

This course describes a Polteq approach (TI4LowBudget®) that leads to real short-term improvements which have imme-diate impact. The measures improve the test process step by step in everyday practice. The success of the method is that improvements have been suggested by the people involved. Improving in this way becomes second nature and a standard activity in people’s daily work.

User Acceptance Testing

Acceptance testing of a new or updated software application is frequently done between other activities. Often user acceptance testing doesn’t get the highest priority. However, it’s an important activity because you cannot expect the software supplier to be fully responsible for testing the correct usage of a software application in a user environment. We have developed the course ‘User Acceptance Testing’ to cope with this situation. The course covers specifi c aspects of structured acceptance testing in detail. A general intro-duction is given on testing a software application from a user’s perspective. The objective of the course is to provide participants insight to the importance of testing, the position of testing in the development life cycle of customized or standard software and to learn the basics of structured acceptance testing.

Correct and clear requirements are an important basis for every project. Errors in requirements have proven to be the main cause of problems in projects. Professionalizing the requirements process results in a valuable set of requirements and a stronger project base. It increases the product quality in an early phase of the project.

Reviews and Inspections

Early review of products is increasingly recognized by organizations as invaluable. Technical skills for testers

Testing software requires typical testing skills, but knowledge of and experience in supporting tools is almost indispensable. Examples are database interaction using a query language (e.g. SQL), analyzing message trans-fer in end-to-end or web environments (XML or HTML), using macro functionality and VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) in Microsoft Office when creating test cases, analyzing test results, etc.

The objective of this course is to provide insight to using this type of supporting tool from a tester’s perspec-tive. It’s not the intention to teach you how to become a developer. The course is mainly hands-on training. After a short explanation of the theory the participants will practice by performing exercises.This course is essential in an overall training program of a professional tester.

The course is given by experienced Polteq teachers who are using these supporting tools in their daily work and is intended for both junior and more experienced testers.

Automated web testing with Selenium IDE

Open source tools are commonly used by organizations for testing several parts of an application. Selenium IDE is one such tool and we have developed a one-day workshop Automated Web Testing with Selenium IDE. This workshop starts with a short introduction to test automation and then focuses specifically on Selenium. A detailed demonstration of the capabilities of Selenium is given, followed by hands-on experience of using it. At the end of the course participants are able to create and adapt maintainable test scripts with Selenium IDE and execute them in various browsers. Using control logic in test scripts is also covered.

This workshop is intended for people involved in (manually) creating and executing test cases, such as func-tional test engineers. Software programming experience is not required for this course, but basic knowledge of it is recommended.

Automated testing with Selenium WebDriver

Selenium is widely used as a test automation tool. Alongside the workshop Automated web testing with Selenium IDE, we have developed a follow-up workshop Automated testing with Selenium WebDriver that concentrates on implementing a structured test automation framework.

Java programming language is used during this two-day workshop. First Java is introduced, followed by the basics of object-oriented programming. After this introduction the participants create an abstract of the ap-plication under test, and the most commonly used Selenium WebDriver functions are explained and used. At the end of the workshop the participants will have created test scripts using the Java test framework TestNG.

A subset of the course material will be provided digitally to the participants for immediate usage in their daily practice.

This course is intended for people who want to implement a test automation framework. It is highly recom-mended that participants have practical programming experience.

Security testing

Nowadays news is filled with stories of how hackers attack sites with sensitive information. How can they get such easy access, one would ask. During this training we discuss in detail the reasons and causes as well as consequences of an inadequate information security putting specific focus on testing this security. We cover the most important attack categories and provide practical examples for each of them. For each of these ca-tegories we do specific exercises supported by effective tools. On top of it we also look into why these attacks were possible and what can be done to protect the software to prevent similar attacks in the future.

This course is designed for anyone interested in security testing for web applications. No experience in the field of security is required.

Mobile App Testing in practice

Mobile devices are rapidly developing, having grown fast from simple one-function telephones to smart phones,

smart TV’s, “smart cars” in the near future. Our life and houses are full with smart gadgets. The mobile applications

behind these devices are significantly more dynamic and offer way more functionality than a website for instance.

In this one day training participants practice with crucial concepts on different platforms (iOS and Android). This way

they will learn and feel what risks they come across and which tests they can perform. We also discuss the way the

application responds to different network coverage, language settings, location information, power consumption

and memory load.

While walking through the entire test process we pay particular attention to test coordination, strategy and ways to

stay up-to-date with the new trends.

The course is designed for IT professionals who are responsible for / involved in setting up, coordinating or con-

ducting mobile app testing. Practical experience in testing is preferred. Testing during the training is performed on

real mobile telephones, therefore we ask the participants where possible to bring their own telephones and tablets.

Testing the API behind a mobile app

API stands for application programming interface, the interface that forms a framework for communication

between systems. An API provides the information (content) to the mobile app bringing it accordingly to the end

user. The key question for this one day training is how do you test an API behind any application?

When testing the API one needs to check more than just functionality, the potential future use needs to be tested

as much as possible. In other words, the tester should realize and check what software will potentially be used be-

hind the API and what (existing or future) devices and systems it will have to integrate with.

This course provides insight into the risks that explain why service and API testing is so critical. We fully cover a test

cycle through a public API. Which test strategy is the best here? Which test environment? Perhaps the production

environment? Where does API testing stop and mobile app testing (for instance) begin? Who provides an End to

End test? This training provides answers to these and more questions.

iSQI CMAP Mobile App Testing - Foundation Level

Today we cannot imagine our life without tablets and smartphones which all use mobile applications, often a lot more complex than the desktop options. Nowadays developers and testers need to pay attention to a whole variety of things: various types of hardware, operating systems, network operators, image resolutions and sizes to name a few. This two-day training was designed by the International Software Quality Institute (iSQI). The course prepares participants for the CMAP exam and provides enough information to start working with mobile applications. During the training we practice a lot with emulators to ensure theoretical knowledge is immediately applied.

The course is designed for everyone who is working or planning to work with mobile applications develop-ment / testing. Not only testers, but also other project members such as developers and project managers benefi t from this training. The participants are expected to have basic knowledge of testing.

Participants need to complete their home work to be able to pass the exam.

iSQI CMAP Mobile App Test Automation

The CMAP Mobile App Test Automation certifi cate provides a good basis for anyone related to developing and implementing mobile apps automated testing. During this three-day course we review all aspects and chal-lenges of mobile apps automated testing. The testing itself is being performed on various devices, both real and cloud based as well as emulators. This training is highly practice oriented, offering many exercises with different (open source) tools. We go through several gestures, discuss object identifi cation and assertions. Participants learn numerous tips and tricks to face testing challenges.

This is a technical training therefore a basic knowledge of testing is expected. Logical expectation for the participants is to already have the CMAP Mobile App Testing Foundation Level certifi cate (possibly the ISTQB Foundation certifi cate). Participants should be able to write, read and modify Java code.

Participants need a laptop for the training and the exam. To be able to automate iOS apps on the Apple plat-form a Mac laptop is required. Participants are asked to bring their own laptop.

End to End (E2E) testing

The complexity of systems is increasing, they are connected to each other and automation is common in our daily life and in processes both inside and outside organizations. Agile development, service-orientated archi-tecture, cloud and outsourcing makes testing the connection between systems more difficult and absolutely critical.

Testing of interfaces and system integration testing are not new. These tests, however, do not fully cover the high risk of dependencies between processes, actual usage and the systems involved. E2E testing covers these risks by evaluating the business processes in the overall application landscape.

This course covers these and other aspects of E2E testing in detail. The E2E test approach developed by Polteq is used as a basis. Exercises are done for the most important activities, using realistic scenarios (the participants can bring their own practical examples to the course).
