Griffe Field Primary school celebrated its10th birthday in 2009. As a new school wehave a lovely, airy, bright building andfabulous grounds. “Griffe Field” is named onthe local Tithe Award map of 1848. Theschool badge was designed to incorporatetwo ancient meanings of the word “griffe”ie. ‘a book’ and ‘a deep valley’ (in Norsedialect). In our badge the sun is rising uponthe new learning day at Griffe Field.
The latest Ofsted inspection found that :• Griffe Field Primary is a good school
with outstanding features.• Pupils from a wide range of
backgrounds work and playharmoniously together.
• The very positive and encouragingatmosphere that pervades the schoolis a key reason why pupils do so welland reach high standards.
We have continued to develop since ourlast Ofsted and have been awarded asilver Artsmark, renewed our Basic SkillsQuality Mark and Investors in Peoplestatus, gaining an ECO Silver Flag Award, the Activemark and our proactive schoolcouncil were proud to be awarded theSilver School Council Award.
FOG (Friends of Griffe Field) work veryhard to plan and organise exciting andinteresting fundraising activities. Theseactivities include discos, Easter Bingo,Beetle Drives, Bhangra Night, LadiesNight, Film Nights and of courseSummer and Christmas Fairs to namejust a few. FOG’s incredible work hasprovided school with interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, a well stockedlibrary, gazebos on all three playgroundsand enrichment activities. They arecurrently raising money to be able toprovide the children with a trim trail.
We have an inspiring rich curriculum.Foe example only last week Year 6enjoyed an Ancient Greek day includingfood tasting and dressing up. Year 5were WWII evacuees for the day and thewhole of Reception turned into piratesfor the day, there is never a dull moment!
Griffe Field Primary SchoolAt Griffe Field Primary School weaim to develop successful, fulfilledyoung people, well skilled, withenquiring minds and positive, responsible attitudes.
We are all so very proud of our school, itis an exciting motivating place to learnand work. Visitors to Griffe Field Primaryregularly comment on the ‘family’atmosphere. Our ethos is central toeverything that we do, from assembliesto whole school improvement planning.Children, families, staff and thecommunity share this ethos and worktogether to achieve great things. Ourpupils have a strong sense of ownershipof the school ethos and understand theirresponsibility towards its development. They also feel pride and respect for thestrong, positive ethnic mix which theyare a part of.

We have a hard working Governing Bodywhich has a commitment to a ‘hands on’approach to their roles. They choose anarea of the curriculum to monitor duringeach academic year. One Governorsupports one of the residential trips everyyear. They also hold a ‘drop in surgery’ atParents’ Evening to meet parents andthey are actively involved in the annualidentification of whole school priorities. They work hard to achieve the best forour children.
Our new Family Room is an excellentfacility for school. It has provided muchneeded space for curriculumenrichment activities, as well asextended services for parents. Our newbreakfast club, run by school staff, is heldhere. It provides a healthy breakfast anda wide range of fun activities to start theday. Little Scholars provide an afterschool club for our pupils too. The FamilyRoom and school hall are also availablefor private hire and are great venues forparties, meetings or communityactivities.

However the last few years haveseen my diet flounder and exercisecut down to nil. It is all too easy toblame the strain of running a largedepartment and the pressure ofkeeping up with two young childrenwith different activities.
I was then asked by a friend if I wantedto be a “guinea pig” for a new gym thathas opened in Derby – The Ladies Club.Recognising that I need to dosomething and being intrigued by thepromise that the 30 minute sessionswould help me lose weight and tone upI accepted and therefore I made my firstvisit to The Ladies Club in December oflast year, having dusted off my trainersand found my gym kit.
The staff there were all really friendlyand welcoming. The gym layoutitself is very simple. It consists of acircuit of ten stations of differentactivities employing differentmuscles and toning up differentparts of the body. Theprogramme that I do wastaylor made for me by DebWeaver who is the Manager. She promised that if Icommitted to doing thistwo to three time a weekthen I would definitely
see results (although perhaps not asquickly as I wanted – to drop the fivestone and get into size 10 jeans ready formy ski trip in three weeks time!).
I have kept on going to the gym sinceand it has motivated me to try and sortout my diet again and I can definitelyeven after just two months start to seeresults. I have definitely lost weight, overa stone and a half and I can certainly seethat parts of my body are becomingtoned up and I have already been ableto increase the weight resistance onsome of the machines.
The gym is ideally placed for me at work, just off Ashbourne Road and literally Ican go in, get changed, do my circuit, get changed and be out within mylunch break. However if you can staylonger there is a comfortable seatingarea, coffee machine and drinks area forpeople to stop and have a chat. I alsosometimes go on my way to work in themorning.
I also noticed on my way out the otherday that they are now signing up peoplefor Yoga and Pilates as well as startingtheir own diet club, all of which helpswith the motivation.
A different type of gym experience tothe norm and not what youwould initially expect, but it is one
which is producing results for me.

18 Finding aProm Dress, can be asimportant to a schoolleaver asfinding aweddingdress is to a bride…
Which is why it is no surprise to findone of the best selections of Promdresses in Derby, is actually in aBridal Shop… Lori G Bridal Studio,Blenheim Drive, Allestree.
Lori G Bridal wear has been open for 5 years and is owned by LorraineGalloghly. Whilst half of this large shop isdedicated to beautiful wedding gowns, the other half is dedicated to occasionwear, evening wear, cocktail dresses anda huge selection of prom dresses.
Short, long, backless, strapless, daring, modest and in every possible colour youcould imagine!
Lorraine and her team give the sameattention to the prom girl as they dotheir wedding customer, they arepatient, skilled and determined to makeeach girl feel relaxed and comfortable, which means that you can expect tofulfil the prom dream with a bespokeshopping experience, simply notavailable in any high street shop.
The team are trained to help you selectthe perfect dress, recommending stylesand colours that suit. Lorraine tells me, thatshe instinctively knows what dress will suita girl as she walks in the door, but alwaysspends time with her customer (andsometimes the customer’s mum) to findout what she would like, beforerecommending a particular style or colour.
By booking an appointment you canensure that the bridal fitting rooms areavailable and Lorraine or one of the othergirls are available. They make sure that thedress fits perfectly; they can make anyalterations, adding or removing straps, shortening and giving additional tweaks.
Lorraine pays so much attention to detail;she never sells the same dress to anothergirl attending the same prom. She keepsa note of the school each girl attends andthe dresses she has sold to each girl, soyou can be sure that no other girl will bewearing the same dress. A task shesuccessfully completed last yearensuring 20 girls from one DerbyshireSchool Prom each looked entirelyunique
With such a huge choice of dresses,Lorraine is able to select almost anycolour combination imaginable, but thiscan take times and Lorraine says the bestadvice she can give to any girls gettingready for their Prom, is to shop early, itcould take up to 12 weeks, after thedress is ordered, to be delivered.
You can find Lori G Bridal Studio at 125 Blenheim Drive, Allestree,Derby. Or make an appointmentwith Lorraine on 01332 550573www.lorigbridal.co.uk

Come Spring, it’s not justour spirits that need
Yellow is apparently the colour of choicewhen the nation crawls its way out ofrecession. You certainly can’t argue withit for its sunlight properties, however, ifit’s a step too far but you still want to feelthe glow, choose a buttermilk shade andmix it with cream.
Pretty countryflorals are not to everyone’s taste, butyou can’t beat Vanessa Arbuthnott’sfabrics for an injection of country charm.A few new cushion covers with frillededges in her new Meadow collection offlorals featuring fifties inspired flowersand butterflies would require just a few
…our homes can look a little jadedtoo. Ruth Eley of Pure HomeInteriors in Duffield, gives us a fewspring-time tips to help us restoresome sparkle into our homes.
It has to be said, spring cleaning is whereit must start. A bit of beeswax polish andelbow grease can make even the oldestpiece of furniture gleam as if new. Nextremove all the winter cushion covers, wash or dry clean them and store themaway with throws and winter weightbedspreads until next year.
Now you’re ready to select new cushioncovers in brighter, more vivid colours.Linens and cottons in fresh florals orcheerful and relaxed stripes and checkscan add a lighter and more up-beatfeel to a room.
Choosing a fabric you love and havingcushions made up to suit your newsummer scheme can cost very little butadd an enormous amount to your newlook. Try to choose fabrics and coloursthat still work with your sofa andcurtains, and look for other accessoriesthat reinforce your lighter look.
metres of fabric. Mix them with thetickings in complementary colours orthe botanical trellis pattern in stone andgrey for a more neutral scheme.
Update plain linen curtains with achecked border down the leading edge.Paint a pine coffee table in one of Farrow& Ball’s many off-white shades to helpreflect the natural light in your room, and if you have the energy and thebudget, a lick of paint to the walls ofyour room can do wonders too.
One of the most effective, not to mentioncheap and satisfying, ways of making aroom feel it’s had a major makeover, is tomove the furniture around. Instead ofhuddling around the fireplace and thetelevision, perhaps move a favourite chairinto position for the best view of thegarden, or where it can catch the sunlightstreaming through the window.

Prepping and staging a housePrepping and staging a house. Everyseller wants their home to sell fastand achieve the best possible price.Does that sound good to you? Well,it's not luck that makes that happen.
Here is how to prep a house andturn it into an irresistible andmarketable home.
1. Disassociate Yourself With YourHome. • Make the mental decision to "let go"
of your emotions and focus on thefact that soon this house will nolonger be yours.
• Picture yourself handing over the keysand envelopes containing appliancewarranties to the new owners!
• Say goodbye to every room. • Don't look backwards - look toward
the future.
6. Remove/Replace Favourite Items. If you want to take window coverings,built-in appliances or fixtures with you, remove them now. If a buyer never seesit, she won't want it. Once you tell abuyer she can't have an item, she willcovet it, and it could blow your deal.
7. Make Minor Repairs.• Replace cracked floor or counter tiles. • Patch holes in walls. • Fix leaky faucets. • Fix doors that don't close properly and
kitchen drawers that jam. • Consider painting your walls neutral
colours, especially if you have grownaccustomed to purple or pink walls.
8. Make the House Sparkle!
9. Scrutinize. • Go outside and open your front door.
Stand there. Do you want to goinside? Does the house welcome you?
• Linger in the doorway of every singleroom and imagine how your housewill look to a buyer.
• house? You're almost finished.
10. Check Curb Appeal. If a buyer won't get out of her agent'scar because she doesn't like the exteriorof your home, you'll never get her inside. • Keep the sidewalks cleared. • Mow the lawn. • Paint faded window trim. • Plant yellow flowers or group flower
pots together. Yellow evokes a buyingemotion. Marigolds are inexpensive.
• Trim your bushes. • Make sure visitors can clearly read
your house number.
2. De-Personalize.Pack up those personal photographsand family heirlooms. Buyers can't seepast personal artifacts, and you don'twant them to be distracted. You wantbuyers to imagine their own photos onthe walls, and they can't do that if yoursare there!
3. De-Clutter!People collect an amazing quantity ofjunk. Consider this: if you haven't used itin over a year, you probably don't need it. • If you don't need it, why not donate it
or throw it away? • Remove all books from bookcases. • Pack up those knick-knacks. • Clean off everything on kitchen
counters. • Put essential items used daily in a
small box that can be stored in acloset when not in use.
4. Rearrange Bedroom Closets andKitchen Cabinets. Buyers love to snoop and will opencloset and cabinet doors. Think of themessage it sends if items fall out! Nowimagine what a buyer believes aboutyou if she sees everything organized. Itsays you probably take good care of therest of the house as well.
5. Rent a Storage Unit. Almost every home shows better withless furniture. Remove pieces of furniturethat block or hamper paths andwalkways and put them in storage.

The Joy andAdventure ofMaking Music
The minds of the young are so absorbentof new knowledge, that the learning ofthe language of music is so much easierthan when one is older. A good tutor cancarefully lead a young person througheach stage, and onto a great skill.
The making of music by young people isvery often the key to a very fulfilledfuture. A complete language of its own, giving one access to countless enjoyabletimes, and the chance to make manyclose and understanding friends.
The acquisition of an electronickeyboard makes for a very economicand convenient entry into music with itsgreat adaptability along with a host ofinteresting sounds and effects.
There are many opportunities in themusic world, and I am only too pleasedto help and advise about all thepossibilities that exist, for your futureprospects in life, purely as a hobby, orindeed a profession.

Noah and Nellies Children’s IndoorAdventure Play Centre on Ascot DriveDerby is a playcentre with the emphasison “fitness through fun”. The formerBumpi’s Big Adventure site has beentransformed by the new owner CraigShipley since taking over the site inFebruary 2009.
Craig said “As a parent of 2 young children, I knew what I expected of a playcentre. I visited numerous centres acrossthe country, seeing the good andthe bad and, together with my ownideas, and those of my children, mywife and input from customers, we havelooked to create an all encompassingexperience, not just for children but also fortheir parents. We have introduced aseparate toddler area, a sports court andbattery operated go karts.
Children need 30 minutes perday of exercise, and what betterway to drag them awayfrom the TV or gamesconsole than to takethem to a playcentre torun around and burn off thecalories in a safe and secureenvironment whilst parentscan relax drinking qualitycoffee. The menu is a balanced, offering healthy optionsand homemadedishes.
We also cater for group bookings forschools and nurseries, playgroups and

Serves 4-6 (makes 12 pancakes) These pancakes really offer up the most divine tastesand textures to the palette, and are enough servedalone, though you may wish to seat them on a bed ofrocket. However, if you choose to use them as anaccompaniment, then they would work extremely wellalongside a simple Ribeye steak, or a tender lamb chop.
You Will Need…180g plain flour 300ml whole milk4 large eggs, beaten Generous pinch of salt170g unsalted butter, melted Grated parmesan to servePine nuts, to serve
For the filling…100g unsalted butter 4 shallots, peeled and chopped2 garlic cloves, crushed 450g mozzarella, diced750g field mushrooms 245g mixed wild mushrooms170g parmesan, grated 450g ricotta2 handfuls of fresh basil, torn Salt and black pepper
What to do…First, make the filling. Wipe and slice all the mushrooms, andthe shallots. Peel and crush the garlic, Melt the butter in a largefrying pan, add the mushrooms, shallots and garlic, and cookuntil golden, stirring continually. Combine the mushroommixture in a large bowl with the remaining filling ingredients, season generously with salt and pepper, and set aside.
To make the pancakes, mix the flour and milk in a bowl, addthe eggs and salt and whisk until thoroughly blended. Passthe batter through a sieve, and then brush a 12in frying panwith a bit of butter and set over a medium heat. Pour aladleful of the batter into the pan, and make a thin pancake.Cook on both sides, then transfer to a plate. Repeat with theremaining batter until all the pancakes are made.
Preheat the oven to 190ºC/170ºC fan/gas mark 5. Put aspoonful of the filling in the centre of each pancake, and thenfold both sides over to form a parcel. Place on a baking trayjoin down. Brush with remaining butter, sprinkle withparmesan and a handful of pine nuts, and bake for 10 – 15minutes until cooked through.
