Today’s digital life is expanding into all possible areas of
society, looking to connect everybody and everything.
This Networked Society enables people to collaborate,
innovate, sustain, learn, care and participate in ways we
never thought possible just a few years ago. One of the
most important things in a networked society is to get the
data into the ground as quickly as possible and make the
data as smart as possible. To realize the infinite potential
of networked society, operators need simple, smart and
scalable solutions to design flexible and future-proof
networks.
FTTH deployment optimized with GPONConsumer demand for IPTV and other advanced services
is creating today the need for a converged high-capacity
all-IP based fiber network. The promise of the all-optical IP
network includes dramatic efficiencies and cost savings,
and significantly more bandwidth. It shouldn’t be surprising
that a majority of carriers have selected Gigabit Passive
Optical Network (GPON) point-to-multipoint systems that
share one fiber connection between multiple users with
no requirement for active equipment in the outside plant.
GPON, an Ethernet and ITU based standard, offers a cost-
effective solution that offers high data rate and enhanced
functionality. Passive components in the outside plant do
not require power to operate. As multiple users share part
of the distribution network, less rack space is needed in the
Central Office for active interfaces and optical distribution
frames. GPON provides the migration path to an all-IP
network and offers the bandwidth required to deliver the
new advanced voice, video, and data services.

of ONTs and ONUs enable operators to use the same
simple GPON topology to cater to different types of users
in different density areas. For example, the T7xxG GPON-
fed modular ONU series provides flexibility for operators
delivering ADSL2+, VDSL2, POTS, E1 and Ethernet services
to both business and residential users. It also enables
operators to support dense areas with different service
requirements without rewiring buildings.
Fiber to the home network terminationEricsson’s EDA 1500 GPON platform offers a fiber based,
next-generation solution that enables true IP-convergence in
the access network, allowing carriers to packetize all voice,
data, and video services. The GPON solution is comprised
of our industry’s highest-density, highest-capacity EDA 1500
OLT and an extensive range of single family, multi-dwelling,
home gateway, mobile backhaul and business ONTs, and
carrier-grade EntriView EMS.
Broadband history clearly tells us that Nielsen’s law of
bandwidth is quite accurate and the demand for high
speeds is continuously growing. However, it is just not about
high bandwidth. The main advantage of a fiber network is
creating a future proof intelligent network that can provide
the required flexibility operators need to offer dynamic
packages to end users.
Simple to install and reduce Opex For successful mass deployment of a GPON network, it is
extremely important for operators to have a GPON platform
that is easy to install and operate. EDA 1500 is a dedicated
GPON platform. The EntriView Element Management System
streamlines provisioning and management of the OLT, ONTs
and delivery of services with unparalleled ease. Features like
speed click provisioning and advanced monitoring functions
lowers the total cost of ownership significantly. Wide range

Smart Architecture enables current and next-generation services The Networked society is seeing unprecedented media
consumption over a multitude of devices. Providing single,
best-effort internet access pipes to the subscribers is not
enough. The GPON network needs to be aware of devices,
content, location, users and flow. The superior EDA 1500
architecture provides various tools to enable current and
next-generation services. The distributed EDA multicasting
architecture with advanced IPTV bandwidth control features
ensure guaranteed instant channel changes while reducing
backplane bandwidth by up to 210 times and IGMP
signaling up to 14,000 times. Dedicated traffic managers
per PON board enable operators to offer flexible packages
to end users by utilizing the zero-contention system in an
efficient manner. EDA 1500 is also a converged platform
for packet and TDM services across fixed enterprise and
mobile applications. The Integrated TDM Gateway (ITG)
board terminates and aggregates E1 services across
multiple GPON ports at the OLT for STM-1 connectivity to
existing TDM networks. This wide range of smart features is
extremely necessary to improve an operator’s total cost of
ownership.
Scalable to reduce the time-to-market To ensure higher total value of ownership and a quick
payback period, it is extremely important for operators to
achieve a high take-up rate on their fiber networks. For
this they need to make sure they are leaders, not followers
and have the capability to launch exciting services in quick
time before the competition. Bandwidth explosion and fast
growth in subscribers, devices and sessions resulted in a
need for operators to have solutions that are scalable and
flexible. Ericsson has set a new benchmark in GPON port
density for its EDA 1500 platform.
The unprecedented 16-port GPON OLT board enables
broadband services to more than 14,000 FTTH GPON
subscribers in a single EDA 1500 chassis. This density
provides significant total cost of ownership savings for
operators by reducing central office space, average port
5
costs, and the power profile per line. As a result, operators
can easily scale their network while maintaining a high
quality of experience for HDTV and 3DTV services. EDA
1500 platform features a 3.2 Tbps backplane that can be
configured with any board in any slot, enabling operators
to deploy a truly scalable, non-blocking, and no-contention
GPON system. The 320 Gbps switching capacity, both
under normal conditions and after failover, features a dual
star architecture with dedicated 20 Gbps data traces
between each FABX/Y control card slot and all application
slots. This architecture provides complete flexibility and the
future-proof GPON platform is capable of hosting the next-
generation 10 Gig GPON cards in the same chassis.
Making investments in fiber network requires a future-
proof technology like that of EDA 1500, which is optimized
in terms of capacity, quality and flexibility. Ericsson Deep
Fiber Access is a complete end-to-end solution of passive
fiber, outside plant components and active equipment along
with a comprehensive service offering. The EDA broadband
access equipment portfolio provides simple, smart and
scalable solutions for high-speed, multimedia rich, next
generation IP-based networks. The world’s leading operators
have selected Ericsson’s innovative Deep Fiber Access,
deploying the GPON, P2P, WDM PON and DSL solutions
in more than 150 FTTX and 110 copper-based networks
around the globe.
