Poetry is the rhythmical

composition, written or spoken, by

elevated emotions.

WHAT IS POETRY?

Basically, poetry is expressing yourself in writing means or speaking. Poetry doesn’t HAVE to rhythmic, actually most poets don’t write in rhythm any longer.

There are many different types of poetry that many

different authors like to use. Here are some of the most common

kinds:

TYPES OF POETRY

Sonnet

Jintishi

Sestina

Villanelle

Pantoum

Rondeau

Tanka

Haiku

Ode

Sijo

PARTS OF A POEMLine- A line is one

straight line of the poem.

When the line ends, the

words start on the next

line.

Stanza- A group of lines

form to make a stanza.

These are like the

paragraphs of the poem.

Example:The bird is flying west, To see his loving familyBut does the family remember?Where will he go otherwise?

He sees his mom, dad, sister,They rush to see himThey remember everything,Every moment he’s been gone.

A line ->

All four lines=One stanza

END STOPPED VS. ENJAMMED

An End-stopped line

is one that ends

with punctuation.

An enjammed line is

when the line

continues to the

next line to

continue a thought.

Example:The bird is flying west, < End-stoppedTo see his loving family < EnjammedBut does the family remember?Where will he go otherwise?

He sees his mom, dad, sister,They rush to see himThey remember everything,Every moment he’s been gone.

HOW TO INTERPRET A POEM

You can do so any way you

so choose! Many poems

have many different

interpretations!

One person could think

it’s sad, and another could

think it’s happy!

RHYTHMS OF POETRY

Poetry can have many different rhythms to it. Here are some of the different rhythms that many famous poets use:

RHYTHM CONT.

Rhythms are interesting, but sometimes very hard things to use. I rhythm can add great depth to a poem, or make the poem sound just plain silly so be careful if you do choose to use it!

Find a famous poem from a famous author that you like. Print it out, bring it to class and share it with the class. Tell us what you think about it, what you think it means, and any other indications the author may have had.
