DIRECTOR’S NOTE
E very now and then, and very rarely, your experience of a perform-
ance can short-circuit your subconscious auto-critic and you are
left to simply be present, listen, and enjoy what is in-front of you. Such
was my experience when I first saw this play performed. At the time I
was a theatre student who had a staunch distaste and aversion to what I
considered art that was weird for the sake of being weird. And then I
saw this play where stones spoke, where language was as much a con-
struct as the set it took place on, where a daughter was reunited with her
father via an elevator to the underworld. It didn’t make “sense” in the
way I had told myself that I preferred things to.
It is a rare and wonderful thing when a play stays with you and causes
you to go back and turn it over in your head. When a play forces you to
be introspective after you walk out, it isn’t necessarily a sign of some-
thing AMAZING or BRILLIANT, but rather a pretty good indicator
that it is worth further exploration. I began to read more of Sarah Rhul’s
work and in doing so found a new favorite writer. I began to look up
photos from other productions (including the World Premiere (which
was in Madison, WI) and in doing so was inspired in a way I don’t
think I ever had been previously. I eventually got my hands on the
script. After a surprisingly quick read I was convinced. I knew. I was
going to take on this world someday. When exactly, I was not sure, but
definitely later. Much later.
I stored the loose-leaf photocopied (and probably very illegal to have)
script on a shelf in my tiny studio apartment, telling myself it was going
to be YEARS before I would ever have the opportunity to direct some-
thing like THAT. I had more to learn. I had experience to gain. I wasn’t
ready to direct anything of that size and scale. Besides, I had other pro-
jects that were more immediate, that were more possible, and that were
far “easier.”
When I received the offer to direct this production for Village Play-
house, I immediately accepted without doing much thinking. I dug up
that shelved script and again, devoured this weird world that Rhul
weaves into being with her words. And then I panicked. It was too
soon. I still wasn’t “ready.” There were other things that needed to
happen first, right?
After another delve into the words, there was a set of Stage Directions
that jumped out to me:
Eurydice takes a deep breath.
She takes a big step forward on an unseen gangplank.
She is brave.
This play is about bravery. Its characters have the choice to do what is
easy, to take the path more traveled. Instead they look uncertainty and
doubt dead in the face and they take that step forward. They throw their
cautions to the wind to get what they want, what they need, what they
love. Village Playhouse itself was being brave for doing a show like
this, something that is deliberately outside of their wheelhouse of shows
you would typically see them produce. They were also brave for offer-
ing the show to me, me being in Milwaukee for just under a year with
few local credits.
So now it’s my turn to be brave and do something that is outside my
wheelhouse. To push the limits of myself as well as my fantastic cast
and crew. To test the assumptions of the space itself. This is my step
forward. This is our step forward. Enjoy.
