Your AmenitiesDo you and your family take

full advantage of our amenities? If your answer is no, let me give you some food for thought. This year we have combined our golf course and Fitness Center mem-berships. If you are a Hidden Valley Lake (HVL) resident, you can purchase a one-year member-ship to the Fitness Center for $50 with the purchase of a golf course membership. (The current cost for a Fitness Club membership is $18 per month, or $216 per year.) We have also made a golf pass available, one per customer, for ten rounds of golf. You can get ten rounds of 18-hole golf for $300 or ten rounds of nine-hole golf for $175. Not good enough? How about trading in your yel-low coupon that entitles you to four free rounds and discounting the cost of either pass by $68? Then, to top it off, if you enjoyed your golf experience and decide to become a member, we will take what you have already paid and put it towards your member-ship! Think about it, you can get your membership discounted and join the Fitness Center for one year for an additional $50! You have many amenities here at HVL that you can take advantage of. Many people take destination vacations just to be able to expe-rience the things you have in your own community.

Deer CullThis year’s deer cull will be

held from January 21, 2018 to February 28, 2018.

Semi-Annual Dues/Assess-ments

I wanted to give a quick re-minder that your payments are

due to the POA by January 31, 2018. Those payments in the mailbox by 8:00 AM on Febru-ary 1, 2018 will be considered as being on time. Please, do not be one of the residents whose pay-ments come in a day late.

Trash CansI have had some calls concern-

ing trashcans in the roads. It seems that on trash days, some folks will stick their cans out on the road’s edge instead of the end of their driveway. Please ensure that you place your cans at the end of your driveway and not in the street. Many of our roads are narrow and trashcans in the road make for a road hazard.

Dave WismannI wanted to send out kudos

to our Chief Deputy Dave Wis-mann. Dave has a lot to put on a resume, like being Sheriff of Dearborn County for eight years and retiring from the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department, but that was not enough for him. In December, he graduated from Indiana State University with a Master’s Degree in Criminology.

HOME FIRE SAFETYHome fire safety is always a

concern but during the winter months and around the holidays there are many more potential trig-gers of home fires. Christmas lights and trees, candles, fireplac-es, space heaters, and the dry air caused by heating, all lead to more fires. Proper planning and preven-tion can go a long way to prevent-ing these fires. Proper response to a fire can save your life.

Keep fire sources like candles and heaters away from other ma-terials.

Make sure that power cords are in good condition with no bro-ken insulation. If you must use an extension cord, only use one. Chaining multiple cords together is a very dangerous practice. Do not coil excess extension cord in a

tight loop. If a breaker trips unplug everything on the dead circuit. You can reset it once. If it trips again leave it off. Something is wrong! Get qualified help to solve the problem.

Make sure that every smoke alarm is in working order. Test each one with the test button to en-sure that the horns sounds on every detector when one is activated. If yours don’t work this way, there are now wireless systems that do and there is no need to rewire the house. Replace the batteries twice a year even if the detectors are house powered with battery backup. The spring and fall time changes are a good time to do this. While you are at it, check the gauge on every fire extinguisher to ensure that it is in the green.

I you have a fire, only attempt to put it out yourself if the fire is smaller than a small trash can. If larger, GET OUT and call 911 in that order. Use an ABC ex-tinguisher and follow the PASS method. If you have a kitchen extinguisher, don’t store it right by the stove.

Have at least 2 exits from each room. In case of fire, get out and away from the house and call 911. Establish a meeting place for all family members. Do Not go back in until the Fire Department says that it is OK.

Watch the Safety and Security videos on the HVL site for more security and fire safety tips.

WINTER ROAD SAFETY

See MANAGER'S.DESK, Page 3a

We’ve encountered our first real snow in December, so we can now settle into freezer mode for the rest of the winter months. The recent cold snap reminds us that we need to do things a little differently during these chilly months when driving. Here are a few tips:

1. Keep your vehicle in good me-

chanical condition. We frequently help people who are stranded when their vehicle acts up. Take it from me, this is not a good time of year

to be stuck outside waiting for a

Hidden Valley Polar Bears did it again despite sub zero temps! New additions to the festivities made it more enjoyable for those who braved the seriously cold temps!

Water temp was or barely 30 de-grees with much of the lake frozen over! Air tempertures were from 5 below zero to about 7 degrees, and yes people, crazy people went in!! There were probably about 70 dip-pers and roughly 150 observers on the beach. I had to admit, the parking lot was full of people watching from their nice warm, heated cars!

New Puba & Pubarina are Jack & Lori Rahn-they have been dipping the Polar Bears for years and always dress the part!

We much appreciated support from the civic club with hot choco-late, donuts, fire barrels, and organiz-ing the dippers! A big thank you to: Village Roastery-HVL residents Dan & Jessica Engle for the wonderful hot coffee! (Village Roastery is a non-profit that all proceeds of their coffee sales go to an orphanage.) (If you are ever on the lake and smell something amazing its prob-ably Dan roasting his fresh-green coffee beans!)

Thank you goes to new HVL resi-dents Bob & Nancy O’Brien with D.J. Services! What a nice touch to be getting ready to songs like “Ice Ice Baby” the sound system was perfect! Also-Earl Beeman is an amazing Grand Master Puba Bear-at least he was warm! Jodi, his wife helps him navigate the crowd! Others help-ing were Darryl and Ashley Howe/Star One Realtors who “planted” 28 Christmas trees and snow covered them! Ashley even wrote a polar bear jingle that was debuted at the dip!

Another shout out to Scott Mitch-ell with White Lighting Off Road, a long time HVL resident. He does a great job on Polar Bear Dip Shirts-(Picture). If you did not get a shirt-please contact the POA office.

Thanks to everyone who helped

out! It is a crazy fun tradition! If you missed it this year-be sure and make it next year!

HAPPY 2018!

January Yard Of The Month

Hidden Valley DiggingsSPONSOR: HVL Garden Club

Market Street Grille in Harrison, Ohio was the destination of the Hidden Valley Garden Club for Christmas party on Dec. 14th.

Before dinner was served, the officers for 2018 were installed by Wilma Gardiner. Mary-Anna Taylor will be president; co-vice presidents will be Sharon Hornung and Luann Roberts. Carolyn Chasteen will serve as recording secre-tary, Jane Ulrick is the treasurer and Carol Mor-man is the corresponding secretary.

For dinner, members had a choice of prime rib, salmon or chicken with pasta. Although ev-erything was delicious, everyone was anxious to visit with Santa Clause. Santa and Mrs. Clause stopped by on their way north from Hilton Head. Pictures were taken, candy canes were given and of course, everyone got a present. The

white elephant gifts ranged from foot washers and decorative planters to bottles of wine and a parachuting Santa.

Members were reminded that the Jan. 11th meeting would be the annual soup supper and that we would be meeting at the community center.

MaryAnna then thanked Claudia Richardt and Wilma Gardiner for their hard work orga-nizing the event and door prizes of beautiful poinsettias were awarded.

Another great ending to a fun and productive year.

Respectfully submitted: Carolyn Chasteen Secretary

HVL GARDEN CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY

The Christmas light display at the home of Denise and Steve Siereveld is the recipient of The Garden Club Christmas Yard of the month of December. Located at 20072 Cravenhust Drive, the display had something for everybody while keeping the reason for the season included. It was a very difficult decision as many homes were beautiful.

Lake Lines January 2018

During the past year, the Parks and Recreation Committee and the Lakes Committee were combined to form the Lakes and Parks Committee. This was primarily because the work and projects that the Parks and Recreation Commit-tee had been working on were either

drawing to a conclusion or they were on hold pending release of funds, and the prospects for funding in the near future were not bright. George Lortz joined the committee to maintain cohesion with the projects that had been in the Parks and Rec backlog.

Early last fall, Bill Cox passed away due to a heart attack. Bill had served on the Lakes Committee for many years, and his valuable input will be missed. The committee will be planting a tree in his memory near the site of the proposed Marina Shelter.

The small lakes are frozen over and the main lake is also about completely

Eight HVL bird lovers par-ticipated in the annual Audubon event on December 16 and count-ed birds at our backyard feeders, the main lake, the golf course, and along the wooded trails behind the Campground Loop. In addition to the expected species, hike leader Nick Ludwig helped identify a yellow-rumped warbler, a yellow-bellied sapsucker, a pair of winter wrens, 5 different kinds of spar-rows, four brush-loving Eastern

towhees, lots of bluebirds, and 3 different hawks. In addition to the multitude of Canada geese on the golf course and the main lake, we observed mallards, coots and 10 Northern Shoveler ducks. One of our resident pileated woodpeck-ers even gave us a fly-by to make sure that he was counted.

Thanks to Doug Gabbard for the great pictures of our hike.

Birding watching is a great hobby and excuse to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. If you are interested in participating in future events, we plan to install new bluebird houses and plant bird-friendly native shrubs in the Campground Loop. Contact Linda at [email protected] for more information.

Audubon Christmas Bird Count a Great Success!

While you are snuggled up by your warm fireplace, dream about getting back outside when it warms up this spring and en-hancing your landscape with bird-attracting shrubs and ero-sion-controlling perennials. Look beyond those fancy catalogs that offer hybrids and exotic species and think about planting native forbes and shrubs. Plants that fruit in the fall or have persistent berries or nuts provide winter energy for birds and other wild-life as well as offering shelter and nesting sites. Native plants also tend to have deeper root

systems that help prevent erosion and sedimentation in our water-ways. Plants that enhance your landscape while providing food and shelter for wildlife include:

■ Serviceberry trees ■ Dogwoods (multiple species) ■ Crabapple trees ■ White oak trees ■ Staghorn sumac ■ Nannyberry, blackhaw and

other native viburnums ■ Winterberry ■ Buttonbush ■ Indigo bushes ■ Coneflowers

FEBRUARY 2018ROAD SAFETY

From Page 2atow truck. Proper service includes tire maintenance, oil changes, anti-freeze checked, battery fully charged, and engine routine maintenance completed. Also keep your vehicle fully fueled in case you are stranded, in a crash, or stuck in a traffic jam. 2. Keep a little bit of food and water with you. If you can, have a bag that you take in and out of the car that includes a bottle or two of water, some fruit, and some crack-ers. In severe weather, you may be waiting for some time before a wrecker arrives. This is especially important if you are a diabetic or have some other illness that re-quires proper intake of food. 3. Keep a blanket in the car just in case of an accident or broken down vehicle. 4. Clear off snow and dirt from win-dows and lights. Yes, you may be able to get by with that little hole in the ice you’ve carved out, but you are severely limiting your view, sim-ilar to having tunnel vision. One deer, or, even worse, a child, running in front of you may spell disaster. 5. Slow down. The road may feel cleared off, but there could still be slick spots where water has frozen and you won’t see it until it’s too late. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination without speeding and give the driver in front of you plenty of room in case they have to stop. 6. Keep your cell phone charged and have a car charger with you. Also keep track of your location. Many times, rescuers lose contact with the caller or the caller is unable to tell them where they are. You should know that a cell phone does not necessarily go to the proper dispatching center when you call 9-1-1. Sometimes the call will go to

the closest tower which may be in another county or, in our case, an-other state. It helps the dispatcher if you can tell them you are on I-275, in Ohio, at the 23-mile mark-er. That kind of information is the best way to get help to you quickly.

There are many other safety tips, but these are the most com-mon issues I’ve dealt with over my career. Remember, extreme temperatures have a way of ex-posing your vehicle’s limitations.

frozen over. The aerators have been turned off in the small lakes so they won’t cause potential thin spots in the ice. Signs have been placed by each of the small lakes and at the beach and marina indicting that going out onto the ice is dangerous and that HVL is not responsible for any injuries. If you venture out on the ice, you do it at your own risk. Any questions, comments or concerns about this issue should be brought to the attention of Bruce Keller, our property manager.

The new year was ushered in in a festive mode with the Annual Polar Bear Plunge at the beach. Many thanks to Ashly and Darryl Howe for organiz-ing and putting on this great event. In spite of the near record low tempera-tures, another great crowd participated or watched. The HVL Deputies and Bright EMS were on site as a precau-tionary measure. Fortunately, their services weren’t needed.

The lake quality over the past year was very good as indicated by the data recorded by Gerry Young and our maintenance staff. Gerry measures water temperature, at various depths and water clarity and Ph. The mainte-nance department takes samples from the lake and sends them out to certified lab for testing for e-coli bacteria. All readings are taken on a monthly basis and all were in the normal range and were comparable to similar measure-ments taken over the past years.

The bridge over the sluice gate is scheduled to be replaced this spring with a wider version to allow bikes and double width strollers. Motorized

vehicles of any type are not permitted on the dam or the bridge at any time unless approved by the property man-ager in advance.

As we approach the New Year and the 2018 boating season, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you are planning on purchasing a boat, remember that the maximum length for speed boats is 20 feet, and the maximum length for Pontoon boats and non-powered watercraft is 26 feet. The committee is looking into the methodology and rationale surround-ing the boat length limits. The length limits will not be changed. If you are planning on purchasing a new boat, or if you have any questions, please ad-dress them to Bruce Keller.

Last year there were 6 citations is-sued and many warnings. The major-ity of them were for pulling more than one person behind a boat in the high speed zone. This is one rule violation that will automatically get a citation.

Damage from large boat wakes has been increasing, causing damage to shore lines and docks. This is some-thing that the Lakes and Parks Com-mittee and the Lake Patrol will be tak-ing a good hard look at this during this spring and summer. Remember, you are responsible for your wake.

Finally, the Lake Patrol is on the lake to keep it safe for everyone. They will take all the help that they can get. If you are aware of or see bad situations or rules violations, don’t hesitate to call them. Their number is 812-584-9997.

Have a wonderful and safe 2018

mittee

Baseball Sign-Ups. at the HVL Community Room

“Let’s knock it out of the Park this Year”

2018 Baseball Sign-ups will be held in the basement of the com-munity center on the following dates and at the following times:

Saturday, January 27th, 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m.

Monday, January 29th, 6:00p.m. to 9:00p.m.

Registration forms, coaches’ applications and frequently asked questions about our various levels of baseball can be found at www.hiddenvalleylakeindiana.com. Go to the “Community” drop down and choose “recreation” and then “athletic club”.

Parents and coaches will have the following options when sign-ing up for baseball in 2018. The final structure of the baseball program is always dependent upon the number of players and coaches that are interested in any particular division or league. The Athletic Club reserves the right to alter the program at its discretion.

Tee Ball:Tee Ball will be for children

who will be 4 years old on or before May 1st, 2018. The goal of this program is to have fun. At the same time children will learn the basics of throwing, catching, hitting and positions. Tentatively, this age group will have practice only for the 1st two weeks of the season. After this practice period there will be games only, one night per week, on a weeknight for an 8-10 game season.

Coach-Pitch:Coach Pitch will be for chil-

dren who will be 5 or 6 before May 1st, 2018. Given there will be five-year old children in this league, it will be imperative to stick with traditional, strict coach-pitch rules. Players will receive three (3) pitches and then the tee will be brought out. Kids will not pitch under any circumstances. There will be no catchers. All players will bat each inning. The goal of this program remains fun while also adding a dimension of player development by having to

track a moving ball while hitting and learning the concept of outs. Tentatively, this group will prac-tice one night per week and play games on Saturdays for an 8-10 game season.

Machine-Pitch:Machine-Pitch will be for chil-

dren who will be 7 or 8 on or be-fore May 1st, 2018. This is a rec-reational division geared toward player development. The concept of the catcher position will be introduced. Kids will not pitch. A machine will be used to pitch that is designed to throw pitches within the strike zone. It is im-portant for hitters to see strikes at this level in order to build confi-dence and to provide repetitions for fielders on defense. This divi-sion is development first. We will keep score. We will change sides after 3 outs but we will emphasize each child should bat three times per game. Tentatively, this group will practice one night per week and play games on Saturdays for

an 8-10 game season.

Kid-Pitch baseball:Development of kid-pitch teams

is dependent upon the number of kids and coaches at any particu-lar age group or level. Coaches that choose to coach within the Hidden Valley Baseball program currently have the option to act independent of the Athletic Club. Coaches can form their own team. This requires taking on a num-ber of additional administrative functions. The structure of the program is complex and beyond the scope of this writing. Any specific questions, concerns or comments about the program can be brought to our attention at any Athletic Club meeting that occurs on the 1st Monday of each month at 7:30p.m. in the basement of the HVL community center.

Respectfully,Scott [email protected]

Dear Hidden Valley Residents,

You would think with the frigid temps that we are having the golf club would be sound asleep, waiting for spring to arrive. Not the case... We will be attending the golf and boat show at the Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati. The dates of operation are Friday, January 12 thru Sunday the 14th. Stop by and say hello, you never know you may be the lucky winner of a HVGC membership for one year.

At Christmas this year we offered the best opportunity to come and play HVGC at a reduced rate. Not only is it a great deal, it allows you to see if a private golf club is what you are looking for. We have a PGA Class A pro on staff, great amenities, great food, 60 brand new golf carts and the list goes on and on. This new program includes two opportunities:

1) For $175.00 you get 10 nine hole rounds of golf and your cart is included!

2) For $300.00 you get 10

eighteen hole rounds of golf and your cart is included!

Our Board of Governors are in the process of finalizing our 2018 mem-ber tournament schedule. Each and every year the schedule gets better and better. If you join the golf club now, you will see just how much fun they really are. We have early bird specials on membership going on so please contact Pat Sullivan for details.

I am working on our corporate

outing schedule for 2018. We still have a few open dates. If you belong to a club, church or any organization looking to raise funds, give me a call and we can discuss the possibil-ity of raising a large sum of money in just one day. The early bird gets the worm so don't delay calling me. Come check us out, I think y'all will like us!

The entire staff of Hidden Valley Golf Club wish you and yours a Healthy and Happy New Year.
