PROMOTING OUT SCHOOL We are always looking at ways of promoting our school to new families. I believe one of the
most effective ways to promote the school is through you, the parents. If you know anyone
moving into our area, has a child attending your child’s pre-school or who has a Prep child
for next year and is considering their school enrolment options, then talk to them about our
school and please invite them contact the school and set up a time for a tour.

Thanks to Empowering Eaglehawk, The Eaglehawk Football Club and the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre/
YMCA we commenced our community breakfast program for all families (parents are more than wel-
come to attend) and staff of California Gully on Friday April 26th. The community breakfast program
will resume for term 3 tomorrow, Friday July 19th at 8 a.m. If you require any further information please
contact Kerryn or Nicole.
We would also like to acknowledge the assistance of Roger King’s IGA in Eaglehawk for providing the
food for the breakfast and their weekly donation of fruit for the Fresh Fruit Friday program in the Junior
School.
EGGS FOR SALE Our girls are busy laying lots of eggs, $2.50 a dozen. See Wendy in the grade 3/4 room. If families have vegie scraps, stale bread or they would like to cook up some pasta or rice and bring it to my room in the morning the girls would really appreciate it. Wendy Ennor

Positive Partnerships- Supporting school age students on the Autism Spectrum
FREE One day and Two day Workshop and Information Sessions for PARENTS/CARERS
of school age students on the autism spectrum
The Positive Partnerships initiatives have been developed and delivered by Partnerships between Edu-
cation and the Autism Community (PEAC) and funded by the Australian Government Department of
Education, Employment and Workplace Relations through the Helping Children with Autism package.
What will PARENTS/CARERS LEARN? a greater understanding of the impact of autism both at school and at home
knowledge about how to develop effective parent, school and teacher partnerships
information about local school system’s processes
opportunities to network and share strategies with other parents/carers and key community mem-
bers
opportunities for discussion around a range of topics relevant to students with an ASD and their
families
Some key community representatives that support families living with autism will be identified and invit-
ed to participate in the workshop with a view to supporting a community focus beyond the workshop.
To see if there is a Workshop location near our school visit the website www.positivepartnerships.com.au. If you are not able to attend a workshop the website has FREE

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 28. PLAYNG SPORT PROMOTES HEALTH Playing sport is a terrific way to stay fit. Whether it’s tennis or a team sport like soccer, the regular training that’s
necessary provides lots of opportunity to be active. Team sports also help kids develop social skills, like co-
operation and tolerance.
Expose your kids to lots of different sports and physical activities. They may find they have a natural talent for
one or more of them.
Some kid’s don’t enjoy playing traditional sports. They can feel the odd one out when they don’t join in the usual
sports that other kids are involved in.
For these kids, there are lots of alternatives. They might try rock-climbing, dancing, gymnastics or one of the
martial arts such as karate or judo. Whatever the child’s interests and abilities, there will be some sport or activity
that will appeal.
What you can do NOW Practise basic sporting skills such as throwing a ball, skipping and hopping
with your kids. If your kids play sport such as soccer, hockey, football or netball, have them
fitted with mouth guards. Top Tip
Avoid giving kids sweets and doughnuts for ener-
gy when they play sport. Stick to fruits and plenty
of water, am ore nutritious snacks afterwards.
Good Idea!
Consider becoming a
coach for your child’s
team sport. That way you
get to spend time with
them, get to know their
team mates, and get fit
too.
Asthma tips for Parents and Carers this Winter Winter can be a hard time for people with asthma as could weather, coughs, colds and the flu can bring on more symptoms and attacks. The common cold is caused by a virus and it is important to try not to cough and sneeze near
other people, and to wash hands properly to prevent passing on the infection. The flu is differ-ent to the common cold and can be a much more serious viral infection.
People with asthma are recommended to have an annual influenza vaccination (the flu shot). Preventing the flu protects people with asthma, as those with asthma are often unwell for long-er and have a much harder time recovering from the flu.
Make sure your child’s asthma is well-controlled; this will help them to bounce back quicker from a cough or cold and will help prevent asthma attacks when they are unwell.
Some medications and herbal remedies that we use for colds and flu can make asthma worse. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any concerns you may have.
Antibiotics are not normally prescribed for the common cold, or influenza, as these medications will not help a cold get better. Effective medications may include paracetamol and decongest-ants; however seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before purchasing them for your child.
Suggested remedies for the flu and the common cold are: rest, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, staying away from cigarette smoke, using steam inhalation, gargling with salty water for a sore throat and seeking medical advice if concerned at any time.
For more information on the common cold, medications and references used in this article please see the Better Health Channel (State Government of Victoria) - www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au and the NPS website - www.nps.org.au. Healthy Snack Alternatives
It is not uncommon to hear children requesting snacks such as ‘a packet of chips’, ‘some soft drink’ or a ‘chocolate biscuit’. It is sometimes difficult to say no because the more nu-
tritious alternatives are not as appealing or quick to prepare. Below are some suggestions for more nutritious alternatives for snacks.
Healthy Alternatives
Packet of chips (crisps)
Air-popped pop corn, rice cakes with cottage cheese, rice crackers with salsa, microwaved pappadums, a small
handful of cereal, wholegrain crackers and vegemite
Corn chips & cheese dip
Carrot sticks with home-made hummus or tzatziki dip, low fat cheese slices and wholegrain crackers
Chocolate biscuit Home made muesli slice or a bowl of cereal with low fat milk, wholemeal raisin toast
Ice-cream Frozen low fat yoghurt, natural yoghurt drizzled with honey or low fat custard with fresh fruit
Take-away pizza Home-made pita pizzas topped with vegetables and low fat mozzarella
Lollies Fresh fruit cut up, dried fruit and nut mix or frozen fruit, e.g. grapes
Jump Rope for Heart Thank you to everyone for their support with
Jump Rope for Heart. We have sent off $611 to
the Heart Foundation. It usually takes a few
weeks for sponsorship prizes to arrive.
PJ Day We raised $148 on PJ Day. Thanks to the children who dressed up
in their pyjamas and gave a gold coin donation. JSC will put this
money towards a project for our school.
