Box 382 St. Joseph, MO 64502 www.nwmogenealogy.com Volume 37 Number 3 July/August/September 2016 Announcements Board Elections At our April meeting those in attendance re-elected Sandi Baker as recording secretary, Carol Almanza as corresponding secretary, Jean Martin as vice president, and Ivana Calhoun as member at large to another two year term in their respective positions. Thank you ladies for agreeing to serve once again. Next April will be the time for the president, treasurer, and the other member at large positions to be elected. After serving three terms, Kelly Alvarado reports that it will be her honor to turn the reigns over to a new president at that time, as she will not accept the nomination for a 4 th term. Therefore, we need to begin looking for a new president, as none of the current Board members has expressed a desire to fill the position. If any member of the society is willing to step forward, please contact Kelly at your earliest convenience. [email protected]Genealogy KC Genealogy KC is a FREE event held at the LDS Church at 6751 NE 70th St, Kansas City, MO 64119. on September 16 and 17. The NWMGS has been invited to present an overview of the materials that can be found in our library. We hope that our members will take advantage of this two day event to sharpen their genealogy skills. He Resides in Italy In early May of this year, the NWMGS was contacted by a journalist in Italy who is looking for family members of Edward F. Golden, Jr., a First Lieutenant who died in Italy in 1945. He is buried at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial in Italy. We’ve been able to trace his sister, Laura (Golden) Spalsbury, who recently passed away. His son Edward “Sonny” Golden III graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph in 1962 and was last known to be in Ohio. There is a small plaque in Edward’s memory in northern Italy, in the town of Cadelbosco. The town will be dedicating a park in Edward’s memory in September and the mayor would like to invite family members. If you know the family or have any clues on how we might connect them to the people hoping to honor Edward, please email Andrea Vaccari, the journalist making this request, at [email protected]. Edward Golden’s monument. The “G” first initial is an error well known to locals. Being a non-profit is a challenge, and I think everybody understands that. When times are tough, gift -giving suffers and we all feel the effects. For the past few years the monetary donations to the NWMGS have been significantly lower and our bottom line was difficult to keep balanced. In the past newsletter we put out a call for help to our members and boy oh boy, did you respond!! Beyond our wildest hopes! We were overwhelmed with the generosity shown and raised over $6,000 to help keep our library running, and keep us in the black for this year. Honestly, I can say that it brought tears to my eyes to read the letters that accompanied many of the generous checks. While we know and understand the importance of the work we do, we often wonder if it is appreciated by the rest of the community. But the passion and outpouring from those who responded to our request for help certainly laid to rest any doubts I had that others do indeed feel equally grateful. So, on behalf of the entire Board of the NWMGS, I thank each and every one of you who acknowledged our need and took steps to help. Thank you!!

Thursday, September 22, 7:00 p.m.: History of the Panama Canal and the People Who Built It: Presenter: Joe
Cornelison, at the NWMGS library.
Mr. Cornelison, a native of Maryville, MO, is a West Point graduate and commissioned officer who served in

Family Tree Maker Group Our Family Tree Maker (FTM) group meets on the second Saturday of most
months. This is a group of users who are dedicated to learning and getting the
most out of their FTM software. Each month a different subject or area of the
software is explored. The group has been active for almost two years, and
new users are always welcome to join. The class meets from 10:30 to noon.
The FTM group is followed by the DNA interest group from 12:30 - 2:00
p.m. DNA is a complicated and diverse subject, with much to cover. This
group explores ways to track and analyze the data that comes from DNA
results, how to use them within the context of a family tree, and what all the
results of DNA testing can mean for expanding a family tree.
