Dear Parents, Friends and Guardians COMING EVENTS Gold Coast Eisteddfod Success What a magnificent day last Thursday was for our children and their teachers at the Gold Coast eisteddfod. All five of our verse-speaking choirs placed in their respective age groups and all performed to their very best. The eisteddfod is a great learning experience for the children as they have to work as a team which requires persistence, discipline and many hours of practice and fine-tuning. The children were a credit to themselves and they should be congratulated. Congratulations also goes to our teachers and support staff for their commitment to the children – this commitment which involved them often giving up their own time – was greatly rewarded last week. They are stressful times but also exciting times and the effort was well worth it for the experiences that the children were able to have. Our thanks also goes to Katie Crosby, our Speech specialist, for her fantastic work with the children and teachers. Katie helped to put the polish on the performances and was there with the children all of the way, helping with last minute hiccups, nerves, wardrobe changes and lending her experience when needed. We have also heard many stories of individual and group performances where our children have featured in the top places and this is great news. I have seen many children coming in with their results sheets and medals for ‗Show and Tell‘ which is brilliant to see. Well done here to our mums and dads who have nurtured these talents in their children and congratulations to them for their efforts. Our group results were : Prep O – Therese Hockings – Third Place Year 1R – Deb Mckean-Nunan - First Place Year 4Y – Laura Mitchell – Second Place Year 5A – Belinda Norton-Smith – Very Highly Commended Year 7 Combined – Jackson Elliott – Second Place Internal Access Road Closure We have decided to close off access to the internal road which runs between our Administration building and the main school buildings and down to the College Administration during our peak pedestrian traffic hours. This area has always been a safety concern for our school community especially before and after school and we will therefore close off access at the following times – 8.10am – 9.00am and 2.30pm – 3.10pm. A chain will be put across the entrance during these times. The chain will be painted in a bright colour so that it is clearly visible and in the first few weeks some free standing bollards will be placed near it to further highlight it. A sign will be placed on the left hand side of the roadway fence stating the above times and a number to call should emergency access be needed in one of these times. We would like to thank our Parents and Friends Association for their promotion and support of this initiative as it was from one of our earlier meetings this year that the notion of a part-time access proposal came. This may cause some issues with parking around our school but leaving this road open at all times creates traffic matters which are continuing to endanger the lives of our children. At this stage it is hoped that we will have the new set-up ready to go by early next week. Australian Government Funding for Schools Included below is an excerpt from the weekly message of our Executive Director for Brisbane Catholic Education, Mr David Hutton. It relates to the latest news on the funding for all schools in Australia with a particular viewpoint for Catholic education. There is a short ―youtube‖ message which provides greater detail for you. I commend it to you. As you are aware, the Australian government is currently reviewing funding for all schools. This was the focus of the Gonski Review. It is likely that the government will soon propose legislation for new funding arrangements to be debated in the Federal Parliament later this year. I believe it is vital that all members of the Catholic education community are aware of the facts about school funding and are able to actively defend the right of our schools to the government funding. They need to continue to offer quality education, while keeping school fees as low as possible. To this end, the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) has prepared a video about Catholic school funding. I invite you to take a few moments to view it. continued over... New Caledonian Visit During Term 4, (October 22

nd to 26

th) a group of students

aged 10 - 12 years old from Sacre-Couer Primary School, Noumea, New Caledonia will again be visiting the Gold Coast . We are seeking host families for this exciting visit. If you are interested in hosting one or two of these students please complete the form below and return it to your child‘s teacher as soon as possible. On receipt of an expression of interest I will forward home to you an information package. The students are very excited and are looking forward to spending some time with an Australian family so they can immerse themselves in our language and culture. As was the case last year the students only need to be billeted for the school week (Mon-Fri). This means that hopefully there is less strain on families involved in weekend activities. If possible the teachers would like their students billeted in pairs, but we realise this is not always possible. Also, it is not necessary to have a spare room for the visitors as the children can bunk down on mattresses or make-shift beds. They do not require special foods or the provision of any special activities. From our experience the program is an enjoyable one for families. Please consider being involved in this program and I look forward to a very successful Noumean visit for 2012. PLEASE RETURN SLIP TO TONY BARRON Yes I am interested in hosting a student/s from New Caledonia.

Over the coming weeks, further information will be distributed to school communities. I encourage all in Catholic education to take an active interest in this information and be ready to participate in this critical funding debate. youtube.com/watch?v=xWyO-iaobfA&feature=youtu.be Prep – Year 2 Athletics Day – Thursday, 30 August The excitement is growing as we come closer to our annual carnival for our Prep to Year 2 classes which is being held this Thursday on the main school oval. Our timeline for the day is included in this newsletter with a 9.00am starting time. Parents and grandparents are most welcome to join us for the half-day meet. We will have our Tuckshop on the oval with over-the-counter sales of cupcakes, water, drinks etc, available (no hot foods) during the morning. There will also be a coffee van present on the day. We will be closing the gates to the back part of the ovals as a safety measure, so all parent parking will need to be in the council car park area. Here‘s hoping for weather similar to that of the last few weeks. Gold Coast Show Holiday – Friday, 31 August This is another reminder that school will be closed this Friday as this is our officially gazetted show holiday. Classes will resume as usual on Monday, 3 September. Gold Coast Catholic Athletics & Ball Games Carnivals – Thursday, 6 September Our annual Athletics and Ball Games days are being held at Pizzey Park and St Kevin‘s respectively on the above date. Full details for children involved will be coming out shortly detailing travel, times and other arrangements. Our Athletics squad has been selected from our results of our school carnival held last term. Please keep posted for further details.

Happy Fathers’ Day This Sunday marks Fathers‘ Day across Australia. I hope that all of our dads and other significant males in the lives of our children have a great day. If the weather stays like this it would be magnificent for barbeques, picnics in the parks, golf, fishing, playing with the kids, going to the football and so on or maybe all of the above. Whatever your activity for the day, I wish you well. A sad day for Parramatta fans in the National Rugby League competition this weekend as Nathan Hindmarsh plays his last game for the Eels after debuting in 1999. Many Parra tragics like myself will be crying softly as we wish him well in his retirement. Thanks for reading this week – enjoy the long weekend and Fathers‘ Day with your families. Yours in Christ Greg Casey

GOLD COAST SHOW

PUBLIC HOLIDAY

FRIDAY 31st AUGUST

Marymount & OSHC

CLOSED.

2P History Researchers Students in 2P recently used a visit with the residents Ozanam Villa as an opportunity to gather information for a unit of work they are doing in History to compare experiences in the past and the present. They shared conversation about games, technology and schooling for students now and for the residents in their childhood. Students gathered data from residents and recorded it in written point form and then produced it as a story (see below).

2P- Ozanam Villa Visit My buddy‘s name was Nancy and she was born in New South Wales. She played marbles, hopscotch, skipping and dolls when she was little. She used a copper to do her washing in and had to wring the clothes out by hand to then hang them on the line.

Zara Nunan My buddy‘s name was Stan and he was 91 Years old. He grew up in the country in Queensland. When he was young he used to play Jacks and he has a billy cart. He had to have a bath in a metal tub and he had to milk three cows every morning before he went to school. Jack Martain My buddy‘s name was Edna and she loved meeting us. Edna grew up in Brisbane and she used to play tennis and bowls when she was little. Edna had to leave school in Year Nine to start working because the Second World War started.

Thank you to all for a successful Fathers‘ Day Stall. My particular thanks to the four ‗shop assistants‘ (Mums Cristina Heaton, Kate Galvin, Sharon Faire and Tanya Irwin) who assisted children with making many of the difficult choices from the array of gifts on offer. We had plenty of gifts for a second round and so I hope all who receive gifts this weekend will be pleased with their carefully chosen items! Happy Fathers‘ Day to all fathers, grandfathers and men who are significant in the lives of children. Your influence is unrivaled and has far-reaching effects, many of which you may never know. I hope you are able to enjoy a relaxing day with friends and family members and be in touch with those far away. Bless all who ‘father’ and protect new life in any way, these ‘fathers’ who teach and guide, who encourage and lead. Invite them to the table of your eternal feast, these ‘fathers’ who work hard to provide for the life that has been entrusted to them. Embrace them warmly in the intimacy of your love, these ‘fathers’ who lift up with strength those who are helpless and dependent. Bless them today with all good things: with health, with laughter, with joy and with love, with pride in their ‘children’ and with the support of many friends. May all ‘fathers’ who have protected and guided the life of others be themselves held securely one day in your strong em-brace, there, for all eternity, to rejoice with their families and friends. Woolies and Coles Promotion Thank you again for supporting our school in the recent supermarket promotions! Final voucher tallies are in - Woolworths = almost 147 000 and Coles = 78 150. Enjoy the rest of the week Bernadette Christensen

The band will play on assembly next week along with 3 keyboard students (in the shed). All family members are welcome to attend and support these students.
