WOMEN IN BUSINESS Page 39 We are lucky at the Peninsula News Review to have an incredible team of women without whom we would never get our product to market. Each of them is a leader in her area of expertise, from Arlene Smith, our office manager, who keeps the paperwork in line and cheerfully greets customers at our door, to editor Laura Lavin and reporter Christine van Reeuwyk who work diligently to ensure that news and events on the Peninsula are brought to you first online and in print. At the end of the day, the one putting it on paper and making it all pleasing to the eye is our production manager Vicki Calvo. Each person plays an integral role in bringing you an award-winning community newspaper. We encourage all of our readers and advertisers to engage the expertise of the Peninsula News Review team. Whether it’s a story idea or a tip that you have, a business you want to grow or a special delivery request, we are here for you. 250-656-1151 • #6-9843 - 2nd St., Sidney • www.peninsulanewsreview.com Arlene Smith Christine van Reeuwyk Laura Lavin Vicki Calvo After 27 years in the hairdressing industry, becoming a hairdressing instructor and eventually owning her own hair salon in Calgary, Alberta, Susan Veale felt it was time for a career change. Susan graduated from Mount Royal College, in Calgary, as a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 2005. She quickly found work with Simply Cremations and Funeral Services in Edmonton, Alberta. Born and raised in Creston, BC, Susan longed to move back to her home province, so when calls were coming from the Vancouver Island area to the Edmonton office, and the company was ready for expansion. That’s when Susan became owner and operator of the Sidney location of Simply Cremations and Funeral Services. Susan is proud to be the only accredited licensed funeral director in Sidney and believes in the company’s motto “We treat others the way we would like to be treated"; and its inside motto “We only have one chance to do it right”, therefore they strive to provide caring and professional services that are so important to families during a difficult time. "What sets us apart from other funeral homes is that we are honest and up front with our pricing, not giving one low price to get you in the door, then surprising you with additional costs later," says Susan. "We don’t have a big fancy building with all the frills, this is one way we can keep our prices low." They specialize in cremations, but can provide green and traditional burials. "We have found that 95 per cent of people choose cremation. Also, we use only funeral directors for our pre-need arrangements, not commissioned sales people. When people wish to pre-pay, the funds are secured with Unity Life of Canada, a trust company, and the price is locked in," says Susan. Simply Cremations and Funeral Services has the largest selection of urns to choose from, many of which are biodegradable, some are made of cornstarch, mulberry bark and salt from the Himalayan salt mines. "Cremation jewellery is very popular as many families scatter the cremated remains and wish to keep a little as a keepsake," she says. There are also birdbaths and sundials that hold up to three sets of cremated remains that can be placed in a cemetery or your own back yard or garden. Please feel free to stop by and meet Susan or call if you have any questions. Simply Cremations and Funeral Services is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday by appointment only.
