Clutches, brakes andclutch/brake combined units
Properties, areas of applicationClutches and brakes in both single and double-plateversions permit high switching frequencies andhigh thermal loading. Multi-plate versions, on theother hand, provide a favourable torque size ratio, but their permitted thermal loads are lower thanfor the single and double-plate versions.Pneumatically actuated clutches with spring-applied brakes can be supplied as a combined unitin a single-plate version. This unit, which wasdeveloped in particular for presses and guillotines,is capable of being fitted between flywheel andmachine body in a very small space.
OperationWith pneumatic clutches, the axial thrust forbuilding up the torque is transmitted by a pistonrunning in a cylinder. When the cylinder space isdepressurised, the springs push back the piston toits starting position. With spring-applied brakes, the axial thrustrequired for building up the torque is generated bysprings. The brake is released by applying theappropriate pneumatic pressure to the piston. Inthe combined units, the frictional connection isproduced on the clutch side with air pressure andon the brake side with spring pressure. The numberof springs and thereby the spring pressure can beselected in accordance with the level of torquerequired.
Installation
TemperatureTo prevent seal damage the temperature of theclutch cylinder should not exceed 80-100 °Cduring continuous operation .
TolerancesWhen the compressed air is fed in through theshaft, care must be taken that the recommendedtolerances (H6/H7) are maintained and that thereis suitable shaft sealing in order to prevent loss ofair.
Compressed air, feeding of compressed airImportant: Use only filtered air!The oil (3) (see figure on page 6.04.00) must be setin such a way that between 1 and 3 (maximum)drops of oil are added per m3 air. If precise responsetimes are to be achieved, pipes must be kept shortand quick-exhaust valves with large port diametersshould be used. The valve should be positioned asclose as possible to the air inlet (for details of rotaryinlets for compressed air see page 6.57.00). Forsystems requiring short response times (pressesetc.), pipe diameters, as suggested in the followingtable, are required:

Compressed air supply
Schematic of a compressed air system:
Pneumatically actuatedclutches and brakes
General notes
Amount of compressed air requiredIf no compressed air line is available, the size of thecompressor must be determined from the airconsumption of the clutch. The volume of the pipes up to the valve must beadded to the volume of the cylinder. The airconsumption of the clutch is then:
Q = 1.5 · V · p · z [l/min]= quantity of air drawn in from the
compressorV = cylinder volume + volume of lines
between clutch and valve [l]p = maximum operating pressure [bar]z = maximum number of engagements
per minute1,5 = factor for leakage losses (depends on
particular operating conditions).
The greater the number of clutches that will beengaged at the same time, the higher will be theamount of air required. In particular for applications where engagementfrequencies will be high, for example, presses,a pressure-compensating reservoir of a sizeappropriate for the size of the clutch should befitted upstream of the valve, to ensure that therewill be sufficient compressed air available duringthe engagement process. The air pressure, asmeasured directly upstream of the clutch, shouldnot fall below 90 % of the operating pressureduring the engagement processes.Guideline value for the volume of the pressurecompensating reservoir: VDr = 15 to 20 · · · · · V
Circuit with clutch and brake
Overlap preventionWhere a separate clutch is fitted with a separatebrake, in one transmission line, and where bothunits will be switched alternately in cycles, overlapping of the clutch and brake torques mustbe avoided. If clutch and brake are each actuated by their ownseparate valve, this can be ensured by the selectionof a suitable delay between disengagement of theclutch and application of the brake (and betweenreleasing of the brake and engagement of theclutch). If, on the other hand, the clutch andbrake are actuated with just one valve, theengagement pressure of the clutch must be matchedto the spring pressure of the brake. The springpressure of the brake should be around 0.1 to 0.2bar lower than the engagement pressure of theclutch. In this way when the operating pressure isapplied, first the brake will be released and thenthe clutch will be engaged. When the pressure isreleased, the sequence is reversed: First the clutchopens and then the brake is applied.

Brake operation
Application of the brakeIn the depressurized state the springs (5) press thepiston (4) and this in turn compresses the platestack (2) against the stop plate (1). The force of thesprings (5) keeps the brake applied.
Releasing of the brakeTo release the brake, compressed air is applied tothe cylinder. The piston (4) is moved against theforce of the springs to its position at the end plate(6). The brake is then released.
Clutch engagementThe piston (4) of the clutch is subjected tocompressed air via the air inlet (5). The piston (4)compresses the plates (2) against the stop plate (1),thus engaging the clutch.
Clutch disengagementWhen the compressed air is switched off, thesprings (3) push the piston (4) back to its initialposition thus disengaging the clutch.

Clutch Brake
Clutch/brake combined units of series0400 should only be used for replacementpurposes. Series 0406 or 0420 should be used inthe case of new designs.
Properties and areas of applicationThe single-plate clutch combined with aspring-applied single-plate brake is well proven ingeneral mechanical engineering in which medium-sized and large masses must be accelerated ordecelerated in short periods of time. Overlap, i.e.engagement of the clutch before the brake hasbeen released and vice-versa, is impossible. Theunit is characterised by its ability to withstandhigh thermal loading. When wear has taken place, the plates or friction blocks can be replaced withoutthe unit having to be dismantled. The unit conformsto the safety regulations of the Employer’s LiabilityInsurance Association. The major fields of application are in presses, guillotines, automatic punching machines andwood processing machines together with textile, plastic and paper-processing machines.
Design characteristics
Friction liningsThe clutch/brake combined units are suppliedwith friction linings which are bonded or rivetedbut can also be supplied, on request, with frictionblocks. The version with friction blocks on theclutch side is the most suitable one for presseswhich are operated continuously. All of the frictionlinings and friction blocks are free of asbestosand are suitable only for dry-running. It isessential that they be kept free of lubricants.
TorquesThe ratio between braking torque and clutchengagement torque can be changed by varying thenumber of springs. In this way it is always possibleto obtain the optimum clutch design. Calculationsfor clutch design please see section 1 "Technicalinformation".
Application of brakeIn the depressurized state the springs (4) pressagainst the piston (3). The piston (3) moves andpresses the brake plate (2) against a pressure platewhich is connected to the cylinder (6). In this waythe brake is applied.
Engagement of the clutchThe piston (3) is subjected to compressed air viathe air inlet (5). The piston (3) is moved away fromthe brake plate (2) until it makes contact on theclutch plate and thus engages the clutch. Overlapbetween brake and clutch, in clutch/brakecombined units, is not possible.

Application of the brakeIn the depressurized state springs (4) push piston(2) of the actuation cylinder (1) in the direction ofthe brake plates (5). Studs (3) mounted on thepiston (2) push the plates (5/6) against a stopplate (7) so that the brake is applied.
Engagement of the clutchPiston (2) is subjected to compressed air via theinlet (8), the air being supplied in general throughthe shaft. The piston (2) is moved away from thebrake plates (5/6) until it makes contact with theclutch plates (9/10) and thus engages the clutch. In clutch/brake combined units there is no overlapbetween brake and clutch.
Fitting variationsThe unit is secured to the shaft either with a keyand keyway or with a locking assembly. The typeof sealing arrangement between the shaft and hubshould be selected in accordance with the methodof securing.
Alternative way of sealing between shaft and clutch:
Lubrication, coolingThe combined unit is fitted in a sealed housingwhich does not rotate; housings can be supplied,if required. Lubrication and cooling is carried outby splash lubrication, both circulation of oilthrough the housing or internal oiling throughthe shaft, are possible, the particular methodbeing selected in accordance with the thermalload. Appropriate rotary inlets for compressed airand oil are available.
Properties, areas of applicationThese clutch/brake combined units combine theadvantages of the wet-running steel/sinter platesand the problem free actuation of compressed air;i.e. the plate stack suffers practically no wear andcompressed air is already available in many factories. They are suitable for the drives of presses, metalforming machine tools, guillotines andsimilar machines that work in cycles. In particularthey are suitable in cases where it would not beeconomic, or it does not appear appropriate, tomake pressure oil available.
Design characteristicsThis series has been developed from the pressure-oil actuated combined units of series 0023 and0123; it differs from these series externally in termsof its larger actuation cylinder, the greater sizebeing necessary because of the lower operatingpressures possible with compressed air.
Torque rangesThe individual sizes can be supplied in differenttorque variations for clutch and brake. The clutchis always available in a standard and also in areinforced version. In this way these units coverthe low and medium range of the torque spectrum.

Series 0404
Application of the brakeSprings (1) press against piston (3) in the housing(5) and push the piston against the brake plates(6), which are supported by the flange (7). Thefigure shows the output shaft (12) in the brake-applied position.
Engagement of the clutchPiston (3) is subjected to compressed air via the airinlet (4). Piston (3) moves away from the brakeplates (6) and presses with the aid of ball-bearing(8) thrust ring (9) against the clutch plates (2),which are supported by stop plate (10). The clutchengages and connects input shaft (11) with outputshaft (12).There is no overlap between brake and clutch inclutch/brake combined units.
Properties, areas of applicationA high number of switching cycles with shortswitching times and excellent repeatable resultscan be achieved with clutch/brake combined units. For this reason these units are particularly suitablefor carrying out the rapid, precise movementoperations that are required in, for example, packing, cutting processes, and mechanical feeds,in particular, the manufacture of packages.
The short switching time and the high level ofrepeatable results result from the pneumaticactuation of the clutch/brake combined with avalve that switches rapidly and precisely.
Overlap is not possible between clutch and brakesince the brake is applied by spring pressure, whichdoes not become effective until the clutch has beendisengaged.
Design characteristics
Frictional system, lubrication, coolingThe frictional system consists of plates with thefriction combination steel/sintered lining for wet-running (oil lubrication). This system ensuresextremely low wear and thereby long service life. The oil lubrication within the fully encapsulatedhousing brings about very good transmission ofheat from the plates to the surface of the housing. If the ribbed housing is externally cooled, thepermissible friction work and thereby thepermissible number of switching cycles can beincreased by a considerable amount.
Design variationsThe different designs of the input and output endsenable the units to be fitted in many differentways, and can be combined together as per thetable of dimensions.
Flange dimensions and centre-to-centre distancesare matched to motor sizes 100, 112 and 132.

Pneumatically actuated multi-plate clutcheswith stationary cylinder for dry-running
Areas of application:The brakes are suitable for mounting on electricmotors or on the ends of machine shafts as holdingbrakes and for dynamic braking processes to fulfilnecessary safety requirements.
Design characteristics:. multi-plate brake. friction combination: steel/special sinter for
dry-running. brake applied by spring. brake released pneumatically
Options:. location for fitting of detector. with microswitch for monitoring the brake
position. with manual lever for emergency releasing
(standard: emergency releasing screws). for vertical mounting
Construction and operationThe housing (1) of the brake is mounted on a fixedmachine face or on the motor end plate. Theinternal hub (2) is keyed on the shaft to be braked. The springs (3) press the piston (4) against the setof plates, which consist of outer plates (5),mounted in the housing (1) in such a way thatthey cannot rotate, and the inner plates (6)mounted on the hub. The spring pressure causesthe adjacent surfaces of the inner and outer platesto be pressed together so that a frictionalconnection is produced. When compressed air at apressure of at least 5.5 bar is led into the pistonspace (8) via the inlet hole (7), the brake is released. Here the piston (4) is pushed back against thespring pressure until it reaches the flange (9). Thisovercomes the spring force pushing the platestogether so that the internal hub (2) together withthe inner plates (6) can rotate freely with the shaft. The piston stroke increases automatically as thefrictional surfaces wear down so that no adjustmentis necessary at any time during the service life ofthe plates.
Fitting of detector (option)For fitting a speed detector, flange (9) can besupplied with a centering hole.
Fitting positionStandard version: horizontal fitting position
If the brake is fitted vertically or at an angle to thehorizontal, unacceptably high heat can begenerated when the shaft is rotating, with thebrake released, through gravity causing the platesto be pressed together. In this case shaft speed, operating time, frequency of switching and angleof inclination should be stated. A check can thenbe made as to whether special measures are requiredfor the desired fitting position.
