When to use PQP

If you have two events that happened in the past, the one that happened first will be in PQP.

Another clue is the word: Nachdem (afterwards)

So whats the difference:

Conversational past tense: Ich bin zur Schule gegangen.

PQP: Ich war zur Schule gegangen.

Conversational: Er hat eine Pizza gegessen.

PQP: Er hatte eine Pizza gegessen.

How to decide to use PQP

Ask yourself the following:

1.Are there more than one events that took place in the past?

2.Did 2 related events occur at different times in the past?

If you answer ‘ja’ to both questions, then use PQP for the one that happened the furthest back.
