PRINCE CHARLES MEETS HYPERREALISM: It’s all about Tom Martin & Exactitude!

The Prince of Wales interest for art is well documented, and now, it has expanded to include knowledge of hyperrealism and appreciation of the same. The occasion: Prince Charles visiting the University of Huddersfield in early 2012. During the visit he met successful graduates who have made a mark in the creative fields including photography and art. Tom Martin, a Huddersfield graduate and Plus One Gallery artist says of his meeting with Prince Charles: “We spoke about technical things mostly, things such as what the medium was, and how I put the gloss finish on it. It was apparent he was interested to see how I had made my work. He asked me about where I was now, and how I was doing, at which point I presented him with a copy of the Thames & Hudson book I feature in Exactitude, Hyperrealist Art Today.”

___________________________________________________________________________________ Exactitude, Hyperrealist Art Today by John Russel Taylor and edited by Maggie Bollaert, published by Thames & Hudson and Plus One Publishing. Essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary art in the twenty-first century. Realism has played an important role in art history ever since the discovery of perspective. Here, John Russell Taylor delineates the artist’s endeavor to re-create the smallest detail, from centuries before the invention of photography to the present day. This book has been published to complement a series of shows called “Exactitude” at London’s Plus One Gallery of contemporary artists working in a figurative, hyperrealist style. The diversity of such works, whether still lifes, extreme close-ups, large-scale cityscapes, landscapes, or commercial packaging, is revealed. The artists, including Pedro Campos, Clive Head, Ben Johnson, David Ligare, Cynthia Poole, John Salt, Cesar Santander, Ben Schonzeit, and Tjalf Sparnaay, come from all over the world but are united here by their meticulous approach to their work whether they are depicting people, American diners, book spines, or car engines. Available in bookshops worldwide, Amazon online and at Plus One Gallery.

WITH A DISPLAY FIT FOR ROYALTY PLUS ONE GALLERY CELEBRATES HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE! What better way to celebrate The Queen’s 60 year rein on the throne than by showing artworks dedicated to her image? Especially for the Queens Diamond Jubilee Year Plus One Gallery have brought in British artist John Dowell whose extraordinary mosaics made of Royal Mail stamps all featuring the profile of Her Majesty are a true display of a modernists take on patriotism. One of Dowell’s pieces features an ocean of stamps, quite literally, surrounding a map of the great British isles. Above: The Union Jack by British artist John Dowell Its title Britain Rules the Waves is a proud statement from Dowell whose inspiration lies in the very essence of Britishness itself as he sees it: “…having another tea, enjoying saying sorry and knowing in myself, in my opinions, that I was born and bred in the most creative, inspirational, friendly and beautiful country in the world. Our patriotism, our multi-cultural society, our history, our fashion & music and architecture on this island brings the rest of the world here and gives me such inspiration. My intention is to create icons of Great Britain and its culture.” Finally the pièce de résistance, Dowell’s The Union Jack which took him three years to create, beg the question: what is it with stamps? John Dowell:

“As a child I was always intrigued how these brightly coloured pieces of paper could send your message across the world. I always thought the colours of stamps were beautiful. As an avid letter writer in an age of texts, emails and tweets – which I still don’t understand properly or really want to - I am aware of the loss of the personal touch and feeling of receiving and sending a letter and the anticipation of opening a lovely object. Stamps also come with their proof of date, issue and sometimes location, the provenance is there in an interesting way which adds something very unique to my pieces.” In his newest pieces Dowell even creates his own stamps. The first featuring Kate Moss brandishing The Imperial State Crown from the

Crown Jewels collection spells out “MADE IN BRITAIN” on a background of Royal Mail stamps. And this, we say, is the right message for the celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Juiblee this summer! Sharing the limelight with John with his own take on stamps is our cover artist; Dutchman and wood-sculptor Diederick Kraaijeveld. Diederick’s ongoing series of Royal Mail stamps in a variety of colours featuring the iconic silhouette of The Queen have found huge popularity worldwide, spawning commissions of rare stamps such as the One Penny Black. Collecting stamps have never been so huge! John Dowell and Diedrick Kraaijeveld are represented by Plus One Gallery

NATURE’S GREATEST May 16th – June 9th, 2012 Plus One Gallery presents the two foremost hyperrealist water colour painters in the world, James Van Patten and Adrian Smart, in this spring’s show; Nature’s Greatest!

Adrian Smart, The Meeting Though spring has sprung and summer is fast approaching you won’t need to head outside for an oasis of flora and fauna. Instead, head over to Plus One Gallery to marvel in the hyperrealist display of colourful birds and sunshine cascading through the shadows of trees and shrubbery, and light reflected in dark pools of water in the paintings by Adrian Smart and James Van Patten respectively. Hyperrealism, with all its magnified detail and the artist’s skillful choice

of focus is the perfect tool to see uniquely every nuance of nature otherwise lost from a simple casual glance. James Van Patten, agrees: “Though taken from nature, the imagery in my paintings might, at first glance, be unnoticed in the natural world. At best, a throwaway memory. Yet it is the mystery of reflection, shadow and light, and unexpected colour, that makes me want to paint these throwaway scenes.” For any hyperrealist artist water colour is a challenging medium and to see two true masters of the medium side by side is a chance and a treat not to be missed. Adrian Smart, explains: “Since I was a child I wanted to create very accurate works of art and chose to paint birds for their beauty and the incredible level of detail involved. I was excited by one of John Salt’s water colour paintings and it influenced me to experiment with this tricky and unforgiving medium. I set myself the challenge to bring something new to wildlife art not seen before, something closer to photorealism”.

James Van Patten, Study in Blue with Red Green and Other Colours In the end Adrian surpassed “close” and went all the way to hyperrealism and this is perfectly matched by James. Indeed the paintings in Nature’s Greatest reminds us what hyperrealism can do which the impressionists wanted to but could never quite achieve; perfectly seize a moment and fix it forever.
