DidYouKnow? The first vision correction device, the “Reading Stone”,

invented in 1000AD, was just a glass sphere used as a magnifying glass.

Dr. Erick Johnson O.D. was raised in Kooskia, Idaho and was happy to move back to the Pacific Northwest to be closer to his fam-ily. He said that his happiness comes from spending time with his family and credits his mother’s influences in making him who he is today. After graduating from Brigham Young University in 2007 with a degree in Biology, Dr Johnson took a job and moved to Mem-phis, TN. Over the course of the next year, Dr Johnson became friends with several op-tometry students and decided he wanted to pursue a career in optometry. Dr. Johnson graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 2013, making him the first person in his family to graduate from professional school. During his senior year, Dr. Johnson did an externship with the

Memphis VA Medical Hospital, were he had the opportunity to serve some of our na-tions veterans. Prior to joining Valley Vision and Hearing Associates, Dr Johnson man-aged a diabetic eye clinic in an endocrinolo-gy practice, primarily treating patients with diabetes, hypertension and thyroid disease. Dr. Johnson really enjoys patient inter-action and loves helping someone who is nearly blind be able to see again. Dr. Johnson has experience treating ocular conditions and diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, thyroid eye disease, dry eye dis-ease, hypertensive retinopathy, age related macular degeneration and cataracts. He is also great with pediatric exams, having four children of his own. Dr. Johnson was drawn to the Kittitas Val-ley for its outdoor recreation opportunities;

his family enjoys camping, hiking and fam-ily bike rides. His wife Jenn homeschools their children Anna (2), Emma (4), Ryan (6) and Everett (8) while Dr. Johnson is at the clinic. During family time you can find them playing legos, reading, gardening or having gourmet popcorn and watching movies. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Johnson to our clinic!

DidYouKnow? While elementary children are routinely screened for distance

vision, these screenings do not detect issues with close-up vision, astigmatism and double vision.

Pediatric vision care is a top priority to our doctors, technicians, opticians and staff. Visual impairments in children can greatly affect their reading and writing abilities, as well as developing social skills. While our doctors are available for regular pediatric eye exams, the first signs of vision problems are often caught in the classroom. Our doctors at Valley Vision and Hearing Associates work closely with the commu-nity to raise awareness about children’s vi-sion needs. “...an estimated 17-25 percent of school-age children have vision problems. Many of these problems go undetected and may interfere with the child’s ability to reach his or her potential in school,” states Dr. Robert Davis. “Because a child’s eyes change rapidly, parents need to be alert for signs of possible eye problems.” We spoke with a few local educators about their experiences with vision in the class-room; oftentimes teachers are the first to see signs of visual impairment. Lauri De-Haven, reading specialist at Valley View El-ementary, has learned the signs that alert her about a vision issue. She stated that she often sees children displaying “unusual be-haviors, such as covering an eye, squinting and putting their face close to the table”. Kathy Harrell, 1st grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary, has had similar experiences when a child shows signs of potential prob-lem: “You can tell when a child is not using what’s on the page; they don’t refer to it. The first thing you want to rule out is, does the child have a vision problem?” For many children who have had a vision impairment from birth, they do not under-

stand that what they are seeing is different from what everyone else sees. “As an adult, you don’t know what they are seeing,” stat-ed Lauri. “and they don’t know that what they are seeing is different.” Valley Vision and Hearing Associates works closely with parents and children to iden-tify these issues and provide children with the tools they need to succeed. We provide eyeglasses, contact lenses, protective sport goggles and much more. “When glasses have corrected a vision problem, you don’t have to remind the child to wear them,”

stated Kathy. “They never take them off!” When a child gets the gift of clear vision, the way they perceive the world changes. A full pediatric eye exam will go beyond your child’s school-provided distance screening, and a majority of insurance plans now cov-er pediatric exams. For more information about the pediatric services we offer, please call Valley Vision and Hearing Associates at 509-925-1000.

This summer we had a chance to visit our lens manufacturer, Vision Craft Inc. It was a great op-portunity for continuing education for our staff. Located in Yakima, Washington, Vision Craft is responsible for the quality lenses that Valley Vision and Hearing Associates provides!

Special thanks to the Vision Craft staff for taking us behind the scenes to learn about the in-novative lens technology that goes into our glasses!

Dry EyesWhat it is, and how to deal with it.

These are all common symptoms of dry eyes! That’s right, even “watery eyes” can be a symptom of dry eyes. If you suffer from any one or a combination of the above mentioned symptoms, you may be suffering from dry eyes.

While anyone can develop dry eyes, women tend to experience symptoms more frequently for several reasons, including fluctuations in hormone levels and pregnancy. Dry eyes can also be a result of normal age related changes affecting both men and women.

Dry eyes can also be caused by antihistamines (allergy meds), hypertensive meds (for high blood pressure), decongestants, and anti-depressants. Environmental factors can also play a role in the development of dry eyes. Ceiling fans, portable fans, air conditioning, car vents, CPAP machines all lead to dry eyes in the same way as having your car windows rolled down while driving. The increased air movement makes the tears on the surface of your eyes evapo-rate faster, drying them out. Heating your home with a wood-burning-stove leads to a sig-nificant decrease in the available moisture in the air, as well as an increase in the amount of dust in the air, two factors that can play a role in the development of dry eyes. Multiple medi-cal conditions can also predispose a person to developing dry eyes including Thyroid Disease, Diabetes, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. LASIK surgery and long term contact lens wear can also contribute to dry eye.

If you think you are suffering from dry eyes, the first step is to schedule an appointment for a dry eye evaluation. If you already have an appointment scheduled, make sure to talk to the doctor about the symptoms you’re experiencing. Your optometrist will carefully evaluate your tear film (this is the moisture layer on the eye that is intended to prevent dry eyes), and deter-mine if your tear film is healthy and adequate, or if there are deficiencies. Treatment could include artificial lubricant, medical devices that prevent or slow down the drainage of the tear film into your tear ducts, medicated drops, ointments and even oral supplements. If you do not see improvement in your symptoms right away, don’t get discour-aged! While there is no “magic pill” to cure dry eyes, there are many tools we can provide you with to lessen or eliminate symptoms.
