THE PLOT OUTLINE FOR OUR FILM, ‘YOU BELONG WITH ME’

Page 2: Plot outline pp

Brief points on our film• Our film is called, ‘You Belong with Me’. • The genre of our film is ‘Romance’ • Our target audience is mostly female, 12-34• The main boy character will be played by Sam, “Michael”, the girl stranger will be played by Tamara, “Emily” and the best friend of Michael will be played by me, “Olivia”. We will need other cast members to play a younger sibling, parents and maybe some people in the background for filming at school. So, for these we would like to ask a child from a younger year in our school and maybe some teachers.

Page 3: Plot outline pp

• Wouldn't it be odd if one day you came home to find a stranger, thinking it was their house?• A normal, happy family are living at home, the parents go to work

and the children go to school and sixth form. • There are two children within the family, and naturally one of the

children is home first. They walk through the door, everything is fine and nothing appears to be wrong or different, they walk into the kitchen, get a refreshment and go upstairs to their room. • They open the door to which they find a stranger lying on their

bed, acting as if it was their room. • Shocked and frightened, they scream as they see this stranger in

their room and begin to question why they are there. The person shouts back and tells them to get out of their house, although it isn't theirs. • This girl is convinced it is her house and claims this has been her

room since she was born.

Page 4: Plot outline pp

• This is the type of setting we are looking for, for one of the first scenes, which will be in the teenager’s room where we first meet the girl. • The plan for this scene is to get a room that could easily be for a boy or a girl. The reason for this is because we need the plot line to seem realistic and if there is an overly boyish room, then it is unlikely a girl would genuinely think that that is her room. •We have decided to go to one of our houses and use an appropriate room to create the correct atmosphere to therefore create a realistic sense for our mise-en-scene.

• The parents and other sibling come home and find the son standing watching the stranger who is now sitting on the sofa. He explains to his parents that she believes she lives there and that she has no contacts on her although has some form of identity. They decide that she can stay in their spare room for the night as it is late and they are worried for her. They lock her in, in order to keep everything else and her safe. The next morning they take her to the police station but they do not have a record of her. The son tells his parents that she should stay at their house due to the traumas and the confusing events in the last two days. For example, being told that it isn't her house. The parents unwillingly agree and tell the authorities what is happening.

• We want a living room setting where the family can come home and see the events taking place. We want this to be a normal, cosy living room to give off the family orientated vibe. Also, to create the impression that we would like, which is that this a normal home with a normal family and this happening is out of the ordinary. To create the sense that this house belongs to the family and not the stranger in the home, we could get props such as family photos. We would therefore have to take photos of the supposed family and put them around the living room to create verisimilitude for the trailer and film.

Page 7: Plot outline pp

• Also, in our plot line, the family take Emily to the police station to try and get some answers but they do not have a record of her. It will be hard to film in a police station and we understand this, so we thought we could create our own interrogation room for this scene by using an empty, simple room with a table, a couple of chairs and a lamp, or we could use a reception desk type setting. We could use the one in our school for this, for example.

Page 8: Plot outline pp

• The following day, the son takes her to his school with his mother to enrol her into the school and get her settled in. He tells his childhood best friend, Olivia the strangers story and she tells him she will help to search for Emily’s family. • They try to research her past but find no trace of her, her name or anything in relation to her. • To pass the time whilst still searching for her relatives and other information, Michael decides to get to know Emily better, they find out what they both enjoy doing, and Emily tells him about her favourite place to go in her down time, that she found when she was a child.

Page 9: Plot outline pp

• The scenes where Michael takes Emily to his school with his mother to enrol her and get her settled in and where the other character Olivia is seen properly, will be filmed in our school. This is easy for us and will be the exact setting we need for correct mise-en-scene to create the school community feel that we need. There is a part where Michael and Emily try to research her past but find no trace of her or her name. So, for this, we can film short takes of the two characters researching on computers within the school.

• The lake near our school may be useful to us for some of our shots. We have decided to use this as Emily’s favourite place to spend spare time and this is therefore the place that she tells Michael about. This is where he finds her towards the end of the film when she goes missing. This is a calm and peaceful setting and will be good for the atmosphere we need to create for the scenes.

Page 11: Plot outline pp

• Olivia soon becomes jealous of how much time Michael is spending with Emily.• She keeps pushing him to carry on researching Emily’s background

and to find a new place for her to live. She makes sure that Emily finds the research and gets the idea that she is not wanted there. She then leaves, upset and is seen by others, wandering the streets. • Michael finds a note explaining her leaving and figures out what

Olivia did to make her run away and goes out in search for Emily. He walks around the streets and in different places they'd gone together. He then suddenly remembers Emily telling him her favourite childhood place to go and quickly goes there to look for her. • He finds Emily and tells her his parents are happy for her to stay with

them permanently and they talk through everything together and tell each other that they both have feelings for each other. They go home happily together having sorted everything out.

• Similarly to The Fault in our Stars movie, where Ed Sheeran released a main song corresponding to it called, “All of the Stars”, Tamara will be releasing a song in relation to our movie called, “Where I belong”. She could perform this song whilst on television interview shows, which would therefore attract more people.
