Please update your own
profile in ClubRunner
Fellow Rotarians, at the beginning of May the integration between the RI and D9370's
ClubRunner database was activated. Now all Rotarians of Klerksdorp Rotary Club in
the new District 9370 can login to the Admin section of the district website and update
their own member profile - no need to wait until 1 July.
Go to the D9370 website at http://www.rotary9370.org.za and this will take you straight
into ClubRunner (http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Home.aspx?did=9370). Once there,
the first thing you must do, is to acquire your personal Login Name and Password. Click
on the Login link near the top right of any page. Then follow the instructions for "New
and existing users - Retrieve your password". Your Login Name and Password will be
sent to your email address - don't forget to make a note of them!
FF rr oomm PPaappee rr tt oo tt hhee PP oowwee rr oo ff tt hhee II nn tt ee rr nnee tt :: Once
you login, you will be able to update your own profile, download
Club and District Directories, communicate with other D9370
Rotarians. And depending upon your position in your Club and in
the District, there will be other things you can do.
When you update your own profile (which should be everybody's priority), don't forget
to provide a suitable head-and-shoulders photo - for the edification of those who don't
know you, and the entertainment of those who do. The personal information you should
check, will cover the following:
Title
First Name
Middle Name
Last Name
Nickname
Suffix
Address
Phone
E-mail
Gender
Birthday
Anniversary
Spouse/Partner First Name
Spouse/Partner Last Name
Spouse/Partner Nick Name

If your email address has not yet been recorded in your D9370 profile, or if it is
incorrect, then it needs to be entered or corrected by somebody who has the appropriate
editing rights. For example, your club's 2013/14 President (JC Nel) or Secretary
(Mariana Purnell), or, in the last resort, a D9370 web Administrator. Until this is done
you will not be able to acquire your own D9370 Login Name and Password. Apart from
your Personal information, you can also fill in your Rotary history, Biography and
Commitments, as well as adjust Settings and Privacy.

THIS WEEK’S
BRAIN TEASER
Last night at the Paper Mill Ball, betting achieved a fever pitch. Waldo
Pennypacker simultaneously dropped two sheets of writing paper (A &
B) from shoulder height. Which piece of paper will touch the floor first?
How could you ensure that paper A would land first? Of course, nothing
could be attached to or added to either sheet of paper. Answer on last page

Klerksdorp Rotary Club Meeting Report – 24 May 2013
By Mike Waks
President Nico (right) held a meeting with a
difference at the premises of Guitar Man on
the corner of Plataan- and Monica Roads,
Flamwood. Robbie Williams said grace after
which Pres Nico introduced his son, as well
as his brother Andries and our host for the
day Gerrit Rademeyer of Guitar Man.
Birthday wishes were extended to Johan Swart for 20th May, Izane for the 21st, John Cook for the
23rd and Adri Minnaar on the 25th. There were no anniversaries.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
• HEADBOY/HEADGIRL DINNER President Nico reminded members of the on Tuesday, 28th
May 2013. Those who still wanted to attend to advise Mike Stocken.
• CLUB ASSEMBLY to be held on 7th June 2013.
• PEACE WALK/RUN/CYCLE at Faan Meintjies on Monday, 17th June 2013, which is a Public
Holiday.
Presdient Nico also advised that he has held that “load shedding” is on its way.
PEACE QUOTE was to the effect that those of us who “see evil” and do nothing to prevent it are
hampering Peace.
President Nico introduced our guest and host for the day, Dr. Gerrit
Rademeyer (right), who is the principal of the Guitar Man. Our
guest speaker has a doctorate in theology and post graduate degree
in music. He is a businessman and is going to enlighten us to what
the Guitar Man does.
Gerrit then addressed us, telling us that the school has been in
existence for 1 year and 5 months. They started with 1 teacher and
now have 20 teachers. There are at present 700 students and they
receive lessons from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 22:00. The
average cost is R350.00 per month. The school covers basically four
areas namely: service, sales, training and performance.
The school sells all kinds of musical instruments as
well as art requirements. In regard to the training the
school teaches music, art, dance, as well as, study
methods. The music being for all instruments and a
coach for classical as well as all types of modern
music.
They also run a language school teaching Biblical Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Aramaic and have
recently embarked on teaching Tswana and will shortly start with lessons in Portuguese and
Spanish. All forms of dance are taught and the art classes have four teachers teaching sketching,
oil painting, etc.
The students perform their expertise at various venues and also participate in music exams which
now comprise both classical and rock and pop music from grades 1 to 8. The motto of the school
is: “We will rock you!”
The school has a service department where they service all types of musical instruments. They
also do sound installations. Their vision is to start a sound recording studio, a ballet school and
also open an art gallery.
After his address our speaker was thanked by Brian
Smith and Johan Swart (left) was our sergeant and
entertained us with a series of “music” jokes.
Robbie Williams (right) did the four-way test and the
President closed the meeting so that members would
have the opportunity to inspect the facilities.

Over the past few weeks I have found myself talking to various
clients and associates about the benefits of social media. To many
industry professionals Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pintrest all
sound too complicated to even begin to fathom but they are beneficial marketing
tools that need to be embraced.
With technology flying as fast as it is, it is essential that every establishment
embraces social media platforms and rides the wave, otherwise you will be left
behind. You will find using Twitter fun and educational as well as a valuable source of
interaction with your patrons and colleagues. It is an easy way to have very personal
interaction with immediate effects and results. The best part of Twitter is that you are
able to make it your own by following the individuals and brands that you want to and
therefore you will only see posts by likeminded and interesting individuals. It is a user
-friendly, interactive and quick which means that you waste less time and achieve
better results than on many of the other socials networking platforms.
TTTHHHEEE AAARRRTTT OOOFFF BBBEEECCCOOOMMMIIINNNGGG AAA TTTWWWEEEEEETTTEEERRR:::
SSSttteeeppp 111::: Download Twitter onto your mobile, laptop, pc or tablet. Click “sign up”
and create an account. If you do have other social media platforms use the same
name so that you are traceable. Your username, otherwise known as you Twitter
handle, is how people are going to identify you on Twitter.
SSSttteeeppp 222::: Learn the lingo.
Tweeter: Person who tweets
Tweeps: People who follow each other from one
social network to another
Tweets: Posts on Twitter
Tweeting: Act of posting a tweet
SSSttteeeppp 333::: These are the fundamental lessons that you need to know to be effective
on Twitter. Do not be put off if you do not remember this all immediately – it’s more
important to just to start and learn as you go.
@signs: Are used to tag a user in a tweet. Search for people by their @username
or actual name.
#signs are called “hashtags”. They are used to put a word or phrase into a
category. You are able to search hashtags on Twitter to follow conversations
about the same subjects with other tweeters or follow tweets about events that
you are hosting or attending.
Retweet (or RT): It’s a symbol on Twitter that looks like two arrows forming a
square. You are able to click the “retweet” icon to post other people’s tweets onto
you own feed so that your followers are able to see it too.
The “favourite” star: A star-shaped icon used either to “bookmark” a tweet for
later reference or to “like” a tweet, using Facebook lingo.
“Trending”: Is what happens when a lot of people are talking about the same
subject at the same time. When you tweet about an important event happening
at your establishment or a great new product launch, you ideally would like it to
trend. This happens by others retweeting your tweets or “hashtagging” you.
SSSttteeeppp 444::: Now it’s time to follow tweeters and find followers. There is a magnifying
glass on the top of your screen which allows you to search for people to follow. Click
the magnifying glass and search for brands and people that interest you.

Oh goodness

What hilarious music
jokes – quite a high
note to end the
meeting on.
But he forgot the one
most appropriate to
NorthWest:-
Show me a piano falling down a mineshaft and I'll show you A-flat

Still on a musical note
.... .... what about one
appropriate to South
Africa?
Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist, but a person who drives a racecar is not called a racist?

For example, my Twitter handle is @chefjodes so you can either type that directly in
and click search or you can search for my full name “Chef Jodi-Ann Pearton” or just
”Jodi-Ann Pearton”. These searches will bring up results and all you have to do is click
“follow”. The icon will then change to read “following” which will show you that you
are now following the nes feeds of that person or brand and their posts will come up
on your homepage. If at any point you get bored with that particular person, you can
simply search for them again and click “unfollow”.
HHHIIINNNTTTSSS
An important thing to remember is that tweets can only be 140 characters long.
This means that you need to be concise and precise in your messages. Always be
aware of what you tweet so as not to offend others or send a bad marketing
message for you or your establishment.
Followers love images so try and take interesting photographs and insert them
into your tweet for a bit of additional interest. By adding images you do however
lose some of you 140 characters so your text will need to be shorter.
To include other tweeters into you tweets you simply add their twitter handle
into you post. For example: @chefjodes would write: “I am busy writing an
amazing piece for @HR_magazine all about @twitter #basics”. These are just
the basics of Twitter and as you begin to use it you will see the benefits of how it
can help you and your establishment to stay top of mind.
PPPOOOIIINNNTTTSSS TTTOOO RRREEEMMMEEEMMMBBBEEERRR
It is never too late to start using Twitter
 Be open-minded
Do not be afraid to try it
Be discreet about what you post – it is an open
forum
Have fun. If used correctly it is an amazing tool

ANSWER
TO THE BRAIN TEASER If you bet on this puzzle, you'd better make your first bet a large one because
this solution will only work once. Simply take sheet A and crumple it into a
ball. When released, the crumpled sheet will drop straight down to the floor
while sheet B will slowly float down.
