EDITORIAL
The picture on the front represents a marvellous effort by the people of Cherry Willingham and their friends. Sandra Gardner launched the ‘Fish’N’Chip’ babies appeal and so many took it to their hearts and put lots of TLC into their knitting and over 700 little jackets have been presented. Reporting on such deeds gives quite a fillip to the job of Editor even though the industry has been by you. Anyway, enough said by me as it is covered elsewhere. Just WELL DONE. CHERRY AND FRIENDS,
CHRISTMAS-FAIR
It seemed frantic in its preparation but all of a sudden the tents were up and we had a bustling atmosphere. Quite a few village organisations took advantage and agreed on the day that they were doing well. The atmosphere was enhanced somewhat by the fairground organ of Mr Alan Williams who had offered his services for free for the village. This gave it an ambience of the traditional village fete rather than the indoor scattering of the previous event at the Community School but weather dependent. Although a little muddy underfoot, the weather was kind, cold but dry. We had the medical support of LIVES throughout the period of the Fair and we were introduced to Helen Booth who lives in Reepham and who is the Responder for Cherry Willingham. There are 3 more under training and Helen will submit a report on activities and pictures of the four so we may recognise them should the need arise. The Fair was rounded off by a joint blessing by Revd. Penny Green and Revd. Alan Swann and the singing of three carols by the gathered assembly.
I would like to thank, on behalf of you all, the Cherry Tree Community Syndicate (CTCS) for its support for the Cherry Sports Association throughout the year and for raising money for the Football Club and Junior School. I am trying to get a wide range of interests represented by the newsletter which is why I have included an appeal from a local drama group for more involvement both in thespian terms and practical involvement in the production of the dramas. (see page 9)
SUBMISSION DATE DEADLINE FOR MARCH NEWSLETTER: To be at: [email protected] by 5pm, 11th February or by hand to: 19 Larkin Avenue, please. Any problems please contact the Editor 751769 but submit as soon as you have details not last minute.

Thank you to all residents who have cut their hedges back to the line of the pavement in recent months, we would like other residents to do the same if their hedge is obstructing the pavement. With winter now here, we wish to remind you to properly salt paths covered in ice and not to use hot water which can refreeze and cause further problems. Additional grit bins have been obtained and these are located at: Lime Grove, Cedar Ave, Ladymeers Road, Fern Grove, and Hawthorn Ave. There have been some incidents of inconsiderate parking in the village. Please do take care where you choose to park to avoid inconveniencing others.

Now that the New Year is here our pre Christmas
activities are fast becoming memories and we look
forward to new experiences in 2013.
The end of November saw members spend an
afternoon browsing the shops of Horncastle before
meeting up at Myers teashop. During December
members attended a Christmas concert at Waddington, a Carol service at
Harmston and joined in Christmas festivities with Nettleham and Fiskerton
WIs as well as enjoying our village Christmas celebrations.
Our own Christmas meeting was quite lively as the business part of the
meeting was followed by an excellent session with Pete O’Brian, a
professional musician, who brought with him a wide variety of rhythmic
instruments and encouraged us all to have a go and accompany him as he
played his guitar and sang traditional Christmas songs and hits from the 60s.
The evening finished with a Faith supper, the wine and table decorations
being supplied by the committee. Jane Jordan and Anne Goodenough were
joint winners of the competition for a Christmas Jingle.
At our January meeting the speaker was Pat Mellows who told us about the
progress of Childline from Esther Rantzen’s 1986 initiative to the hugely
successful organisation it is today. Nowadays children can contact Childline
on line as well as by telephone, in fact last year nearly half of the
counselling took place on line. The three main topics are family relation,
bullying and physical abuse. There is always a queue to be counselled and
Childline’s aim is to answer every call which means that more money is
needed. Lack of money caused Childline to become part of the NSPCC in
2006 but we can help by donations, fundraising, spreading the word or even
volunteering. Pat’s talk brought home to us the misery and fear that many
children suffer and, as she said, all children have a right to a safe childhood..
We were pleased to welcome three visitors to our meeting and we hope that
they will join us again on 13 February when Stephan Novak, accompanied
his dog Grant, will talk to us about Guide Dogs. The competition will be a
dog ornament.

SCOTHERN PLAYERS NEED YOU!
Scothern Players are a well- established amateur dramatic group who put on
2 plays a year at Scothern Village Hall. We have a very loyal following and
usually sell out all performances.
We are a very friendly group with a reputation for encouraging new mem-
bers of all ages and abilities, not just to try their hand at acting, but also
directing, producing, stage management, front of house, technical etc.
We particularly need help with set – building: because the Hall is used by
many local groups, we usually have to build our sets during weekdays, so
have found that this means that retired people fit the bill perfectly!
If you have basic DIY skills and can spare some time, we would be
delighted to talk to you. Our performances are usually in May and
November, and set build normally starts 6 – 8 weeks prior to opening night,
depending on the complexity. We work as a team so there is usually
someone available to help.
We would also like to encourage anyone with technical skills to get
involved – we have good quality sound and light facilities and the ability to
control everything by computer. If this is an area you would like to know
more about we can arrange for you to shadow our technical director.
Being part of a successful am-dram group is a fascinating hobby: it can be
hard work, especially as we approach performance dates, but incredibly
rewarding as well – when the audience applause at the end of a show it is a
tribute not just to the cast, but the crew as well, without whom no group
could function.
As a Charity, LIVES relies heavily on donations from
members of the public. There are various ways that
you can help LIVES to raise the funds necessary to
provide a rapid 999 emergency response across the
county. Why not become a friend of LIVES and for a
donation of £20 or more you will receive a pin badge,
car sticker and the LIVES Newsletter

Here is a review of the Cherry Willingham Army Cadets and what they have achieved over
the year of 2012. In February cadet SSgt Brammer, Cpl Asplin and Cpl Brammer got
selected to represent the Battalion in the inter-counties football competition at Colchester,
who, along with the other cadets from Lincolnshire, the Battalion went on to win the
competition without losing one single match at either age group, Our own Cpl G Asplin was
the star of the show! Also in February eleven other members of the detachment went on a
weekend to Beckingham to progress further in their training. Six cadets along with Sgt D
Brammer did ‘Bag Packing’ and raised over £1200 for our quartermaster who was taking
part in the London Marathon later on in the year. Four cadets attended their first Gold Duke
of Edinburgh Award (DofE) planning weekend, and Cpl Brammer took part in the Inter-
counties FA competition to which his age group won best team. March kicked off with four
cadets and two adults attending a 3 star training weekend on a very hard and wet weekend,
but they gained some valuable experience. SSgt’s S Brammer and L Wiles completed their
Senior Cadet Instructors course and Cadets Leadership Course over this period, gaining
very good grades. The battalion took part in the second Gold DofE planning weekend and
the UK football competition. The juniors, led by Cpl Brammer came 3rd in their group, the
seniors with SSgt Brammer and Cpl Asplin in their team were runners up only losing to
London ACF (who haven’t lost in 10 years). In April we took part in the spring adventure
training camp in the North Derbyshire, where the gold DofE group completed their practice
expedition and Sgt L Wiswould at long last completed her 3 star map and compass. Two
weeks later the detachment was back at Beckingham camp to carry out more cadet training,
and then the following weekend five of the cadets took part in the Battalion athletics. May
was a quiet month Sgt’s Trevor and Rachel Bridgwood did their Tug of War course and the
detachment took part in the open day at the castle for the Queens diamond jubilee. Sgt D
Brammer and Cpl Brammer went to London as they were given VIP tickets to watch the
concert. In June, twenty three cadets went on the field craft weekend, a very wet and
horrible weekend but the cadets stuck it out and came away with some very good results.
Five of the junior cadets took part in their practice bronze DofE expedition; it was quite a
shock to them! In July, Sgt’s Bridgwood and myself went to Cambridge to help out with
their open day, by taking down the 30ft climbing wall for them to use. The Gold DofE
expedition took part in the North Yorkshire moors, the cadets from Cherry were at the
forefront and completed the expedition all in one piece, they had covered 80kms in four
days carrying all their equipment. Our thanks go to Cllr Parrot who had given us £280
through a grant to buy some excellent rucksacks which made things that much easier. In
August eight cadets went on annual camp for a fortnight and had a great time doing a
number of activities they don’t normally get to do. In September six cadets took part in their
Cherry Willingham Detachment—1 Company

Football Club
Results have improved with a 2-2 draw at top club RM Imps and a 4-3
victory against second club Ivy Tavern which has moved us into the top half
of the league table
The Christmas break did us no good as we were beaten by bottom club
Fulbeck. This game brought our first red card of the season when we had to
play most of the game with 10 players and suffer a defeat we were not
expecting.
We still await a date to play our Village Trophy semi final game against
Metheringham. The Fixtures table was not available at the time of going to
Press.
The Annual Boxing Day charity game between the Oldies and the Young
‘Uns was an excellent very highly contested game with a good turn out of
both players and spectators. Again the Oldies triumphed 2-1 victory with
goals by Jim Taylor and Gary Jenkinson. The day ended with a get together
in the Cherry Tree where a raffle was run for the Sports Association for
which we thank those who donated Prizes. The players all made donations
which was for the Macmillan Appeal.

Cherry Willingham Gardening Club
Hello everyone,
With one month of the New Year already gone, we can now
look forward to more light, more warmth and, above all, more gardening.
But don't rush out to start planting and sowing outside, as the soil needs time
to warm, particularly after being sodden for so long.
To start off our Club season, our first guest speaker is Mr Harold Leach,
who will present a slide show entitled "Colour through the Year".
The meeting will be held, as usual, in the Church Hall on the High Street,
starting at 7.30pm.The date for your diary is Wednesday 27th February.
May I remind you about the forthcoming Village Fun Gala, which is
scheduled for 13th July, and will be held in the school on Hawthorn Road.
More information on this will appear in future editions if this newsletter.

Knit and Natter Members of Knit and Natter would like to wish you all
A Very Happy and Peaceful New Year.
We are a group of knitters of different ages and abilities
who meet once a fortnight in the Millennium Hall High
Street. If you feel you would like to join us you would be
very welcome. If you can't knit and would like to learn we
will try to teach you. After all, none of us was born able to
knit and had to be taught. In my case, I was in my thirties and am still
learning new techniques.
February Meetings are on the 6th and 20th.
Bronze and Silver expedition in the Wolds, and like most of the weekends, this year it
rained, but, once again to their credit, they soldiered on and passed, well done. In
November the detachment took part in raising funds for the Royal British Legion through
selling poppies. A total of £726.00 raised. Fifteen took part in the Remembrance Day pa-
rade at the cathedral. December saw the Christmas camp take place with again nearly all
the cadets going. On the 6th December I had the greatest of pleasure of taking four Ex
Cadets along with their parents to St James Palace to receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh
Awards, this was the first time ever four cadets from one detachment had ever gone
through the complete syllabus, and I was so proud to be there to see it. The names of the Ex
Cadets David Butcher, Jordan Merrett, Natasha Chambers and Kirsty Ware. The New
Year is up and running now and we have a number of activities already planned for the

COUNSELLING
BACP Definition of CounsellingCounselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking
therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a
short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their
wellbeing.
In everyday life we are all presented with problems and issues, and at
times are unable to deal with them ourselves or solely by the advice of
well-meaning friends or family. I offer a friendly, patient and open
approach to counselling, working at your own pace. I can help you
explore the issues and allow you to understand and come to terms with
them.
I’m Robbie Thain and I am a member of BACP British Association for
Counselling & Psychotherapy. For further information on counselling
February 17th - 3.00pm-4.30pm at Fiskerton Village Hall: the
special monthly Prospects meeting for adults with learning
disabilities.
Every Tuesday, at 7.45pm: a group meets at 10 Bellwood
Grange, the home of the Stubbs family, to study the bible together.
This is a good place to ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere. All
are very welcome.
Last Friday evening in each month “Solo” group for ladies - a
mixture of crafts and social activities, also at 10 Bellwood Grange.

SCOUTS & GUIDE’S PAPER COLLECTIONS: Sat 16th February
Please put out your newspapers by 7;30 am. (collected on the 3rd Saturday
in the month).
Our Scout and Guide groups have been very busy this term, fund raising and working on
Challenges and activity badges.
Our Autumn Fair raised £280.00, and we wish to thank everyone for their donations and all
those who attended to support us. During our Helping Hands project, our young people
raised £170.00 for school children in a remote village in Nepal.
We are all looking forward to our visit to the pantomime Dick Whittington at the Theatre
Royal in January.
There are currently 16 Scouts in the troop, 11 of whom are booked to attend POACHER
2013. This is an international Scout and Guide Jamboree held on Lincolnshire Showground
every 4 years. We welcome more than 8000 Scouts and Guides from home and abroad,
camp side by side, sharing activities.
Guides (18 girls) and Senior Section (3 girls) have started the year with a very packed
programme. They have been to London to see Shrek the Musical, to Sheffield shopping and
to see the guiding pop concert (they saw groups such as Scouting for Girls, Little Mix and
Lawson). Then at half term they went for a few days away at the Trusthorpe near Sutton on
Sea. They started fundraising in October towards new camping equipment with a Pampered
Chef evening which was well attended by friends and family. They are also planning to
attend POACHER 2013 next summer.
The Scouts and Guides will be fund raising for the food and costs for POACHER 2013 so
any donations would be very welcome!
The Cub pack is 21 strong and we have recently invested new members, some moving on
from Beavers and others who are new to Scouting. We are currently working on Christmas
projects.
Due to needing volunteers to help run the Brownies (40 in the pack), it was agreed that both
units would run at the same time so enabling all the girls to continue within Guiding. The
Brownies have had a few girls join them from Rainbows and have had some fun packed
activities during the meeting nights.
The Beaver Colony has 17 enrolled Beavers. We have had a term of making, doing and
having fun. Our District Sleepover at The Showroom in Lincoln was the highlight of the
term.
The Rainbow (18 girls) numbers have increased and they have had a very busy time at
meetings doing many activities towards completing one of their roundabout badges.

The Mothers Union were invited to Willow Court before Christmas to entertain residents with Christmas songs and carols. It was Gracie’s 90th birthday and Freda’s 89th birthday and what an uplifting afternoon it was. It was debateable who enjoyed it most, the residents or our members (including some friends too). The singing was a joy to hear and, of course, the afternoon ended with ’Happy Birthday’ plus tea and birthday cake.
The week of our meeting we are thinking about relationships. “Take time to reflect on the relationships which give joy and purpose to life. Pray for God’s blessing on those whom you love”.
Yet another reminder about St Benedict’s and find some rest and quietness to give you strength for more shopping etc. Look out for the board and enjoy the oasis of rest before you finish your shopping. We invite everyone to attend our meetings, Any queries about the Mothers Union contact: Anne Parker-(856588), or Ann Jones (751095) or any M.U. member.
