The Rev. Dr. Joy J. Moore, PhD serves as associate dean for Black Church Studies and Church Relations at Duke Divinity School in Durham, N.C. and teaches in the area of homiletics and the practice of ministry.

Moore serves on the board of directors for ZOE Ministries, an empowerment program that provides a comprehensive approach to transforming the lives of African children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, war, disease, famine and other causes. She is also on the advisory board of the Center for Reconciliation. Founded in 2005 to inspire, form, and support leaders, communities, and congregations to live as ambassadors of Christ’s reconciliation, the Center has become a leading voice in shaping a distinctly Christian vision of reconciliation, with a desire to equip the Church for reconciliation, justice, and peacemaking in a divided world.

Moore’s research interests focus primarily on understanding the critical issues influencing contemporary culture for community formation. Examining these interests in biblical studies, practical

theology, homiletics, narrative hermeneutics and social media, she is known for loving to tell stories with a theological twist! Her chapter in Andrew C. Thompson’s Generation Rising: A Future with Hope for the United Methodist Church (Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2011), calls for preaching that takes seriously the story of Scripture over the moralisms we choose to impose on its stories.

She became a John Wesley Fellow in 2001, and is a member of the Society for Biblical Literature, the Academy of Homiletics, the American Academy of Religion, and the National Association of United Methodist Evangelists. She joined the Administration at Duke in July of 2008 first as Associate Dean for Lifelong Learning. Prior to moving to Duke University, Moore was Assistant Professor of Preaching at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky, where she has previously served a Director of Women’s and Ethnic Ministries and later as Director of Student Life. She has served as Chaplain and Director of Church Relations at Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan, a church-related liberal arts college. An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church West Michigan Conference, Moore has served as the associate and the senior pastor in congregations in rural, urban and suburban Michigan. A characteristic of her work has been to provide opportunities for the Christian hope to be explained and practiced so others are welcomed to accept their vocation as representatives of the reconciling love of God — practicing hope, hospitality, and honesty.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Rev. Moore’s desire to teach led her to study at National Louis University in Evanston, Illinois, from which she received a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Mathematics. She holds a Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Seminary. Moore earned a PhD. from Brunel University, London, England in practical theology with an emphasis in Homiletics and Theological Hermeneutics.

A frequently featured preacher, Bible study leader and teacher at workshops, conferences, and worship services around the country, she is currently conducting research on the impact of various media forms on how we assimilate information and what it does to our religious imagination. Dr. Joy is an avid fan of books by David Baldacci, and, when she is not teaching, enjoys traveling, watching reruns of Babylon 5, and reading.

GATHERING Dr. Luther Henry UMH No. 870

Leader – Dying, Christ destroyed our death. People – Rising, Christ restored our life. Christ will come again in glory. Leader – As in baptism they put on Christ, People – So in Christ may they be clothed with glory. Leader – Here and now, dear friends, we are God’s children. What we shall be has not yet been revealed; but we know that when he appears, we shall be like him. for we shall see him as he is. People – Those who have this hope purify themselves as Christ is pure.

*PRAYER Rev. Carol Woods Eternal God, We praise you for the great company of all those who have finished their course in faith and now rest from their labor.

We praise you for those dear to us whom we name in our hearts before you.

Especially we praise you for those clergy and lay members of the Central Texas Annual Conference whom you have graciously received into your presence.

To all of these, grant your peace. Let perpetual light shine upon them; And help us so to believe where we have not seen, that your presence may lead us through our years, and bring us at last with them into the joy of your home not made with hands but eternal in the heavens;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SCRIPTURE Isaiah 6:1-8 (Common English Bible) Mr. Aaron Kenniger 1In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the Lord sitting on a high and exalted throne, the edges of his robe filling the temple. 2 Winged creatures were stationed around him. Each had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two their feet, and with two they flew about. 3 They shouted to each other, saying: “Holy, holy, holy” is the LORD of heavenly forces! All the earth is filled with God’s glory! 4 The doorframe shook at the sound of their shouting, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 I said, “Mourn for me; I’m ruined! I’m a man with unclean lips, and I live among a people with unclean lips. Yet I’ve seen the king, the LORD of heavenly forces!” 6 Then one of the winged creatures flew to me, holding a glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7 He touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips. Your guilt has departed, and your sin is removed.” 8 Then I heard the Lord’s voice saying, “Whom should I send, and who will go for us?” I said, “I’m here; send me.”

As you place your flower on the cross, you are invited to remember a saint by name, either aloud or silently.

There are five crosses in Chisholm Hall this morning; Please follow the directions of the tellers, who will direct you to the nearest cross.

BLESSING Bishop Mike Lowry

Bishop – Lord, you remembered us.

People – Lord, you re-membered us.

Bishop – As those who share this church and conference as a place of membership,

People – We give thanks for the power of the risen Christ, that inspired those whom we remember today and that inspires us to re-member our ministries, clergy and lay, that your church might continue to build effectively, your kingdom.

Bishop – As we prepare to do the business of the church,

People – Help us remember that our business is to make disciples so that our world might be transformed by the unique and life-changing witness of Jesus.

Bishop – Bless us as we work together,

Bound by God’s far purpose in one living whole, move we on together to the shining goal.

Response of the People Dr. Jim Conner

Leader – Brothers and sisters in Christ, you came to us from congregations where the Spirit of the Lord was upon you, and you were charged to preach to the broken-hearted, to visit the captive, to anoint those who were bruised. These things you have done.

People – We thank God for the community of the faithful in which the word of God found response. Countless persons have depended upon you for help. In the providence of God, you know that both suffering and joy can be God’s way of teaching and healing.

Leader – At your ordination, you received authority to read the Holy Scripture in the Church of God, to preach the Word, to celebrate the Sacraments, to order the life of the Church, and to connect the Church and the world. By grace you did many things that seemed to be beyond your power.

People – We thank God that you were given the vision to be faithful. Death and illness have not come on schedule. The truth has not always been easy to preach. We know something of the grace by which you have lived, and we thank God for your vision and faithfulness.

Leader – Never think lightly of the great good that God has wrought through you. Continue to be true to your calling. May God’s love and power be with you always. Let us pray together.

All – God of grace, you fill your servants with your vision. You empower your servants with your Spirit. We give thanks for the ministry of these men and women, and for the ways in which you have ministered to us through them. Give them a sense of your abiding presence that they may continue to love and serve you, and ever grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Passing of the Mantle Bishop Mike Lowry

Retiring Elder, Tom Connolly & Receiving Elder, Estee Valendy Retiring Deacon, Karen Granderson & Receiving Deacon, Greg Shapley

Representatives of the retiring and incoming classes kneel.

The bishop takes a mantle and places it on the shoulders of the representatives of the retiring class saying – In the book of Kings we read of the Prophet Elijah’s ministry. The mantle, symbolic of submission to God, fell upon the younger prophet, Elisha, and the spirit of Elijah rested upon Elisha.

The representatives of the retiring class rise and place their mantle on the shoulders of their representative of the new full member class, saying – I transfer this mantle from one generation to another, indicating that the responsibilities and dedication of one generation will be caught up and carried on by another, and the spirit of today’s Elijahs will rest upon today’s Elishas.

*Hymn “Take My Life and Let It Be” UMH No. 399

Verse I Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee.

Take my moments and my days, let them flow in cease-less praise. Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love.

Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

Verse II Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King.

Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee. Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold.

Take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.

Verse III Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine. Take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne. Take my love, my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure store.

Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee.

*Benediction Bishop Mike Lowry

Bishop – For everything there is a season, a time for every matter under heaven. So, too, there is a time for movement, new adventure, fields of service not yet touched. With love, we send you forth in the spirit of John Wesley: May the world be your parish.

People – Go into the world and respond to the love of Christ in all you do. Live out the vision God has given you. May God’s mercy, grace and peace be with you. May you be channels for God’s mercy, grace and peace to the world wherever you may be!

Therefore, in celebration of our common ministry, I call upon all God’s people gathered here. As the Bishop pours the water he says – Remember your baptism and be thankful. AFFIRMATION OF CANDIDATES Bishop Mike Lowry

Bishop – Brothers and sisters in Christ, these persons, are by God’s grace to be commissioned and ordained to ministry. Christ gave this command: “Ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest.” In Antioch, the Holy Spirit instructed the community to “Set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I, the Holy Spirit, have called them.” These sisters and brothers know our Savior’s concern for God’s people, see the plentiful harvest, and are ready to respond generously to the Lord in the words of the prophet: “Here I am, send me.” The Church has discerned that they are persons of sound learning and of Christian character, and possess the necessary signs of God’s grace, and have demonstrated a profound commitment to serve Jesus Christ. Therefore, we believe them to be duly called to serve God. AFFIRMATION OF CANDIDATES (continued)

Bishop – We ask you, people of God, to declare your assent to the commissioning and ordination of these persons. Do you trust that they are worthy, by God’s grace?

Candidates – We do! Thanks be to God!

Bishop – Will you uphold them in their ministry?

Candidates – With God’s help, we will!

The candidates may be seated.

GENERAL EXAMINATION

The candidates stand, and the Bishop addresses all the candidates

Bishop – My sisters and brothers, all Christians are called through baptism to share in Christ’s ministry of love and service, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to work and live for the redemption of all people and the whole creation. You have been called, by the Spirit of God working in you, to a particular form of service within God’s people, and today the Church, the Body of Christ, confirms and blesses your calling through commissioning or ordination.

As representative ministers in the Church, you are to be co-workers with the Bishops, Deacons, Diaconal Ministers, Commissioned Ministers, Local Pastors, Associate Members, Elders, and Laity. It is your task to proclaim by word and deed the gospel of Jesus Christ, to lead persons to faith in Jesus Christ, and to conform your life in accordance with the gospel.

Remember that you are called to serve rather than to be served, to proclaim the faith of the Church and no other, to look after the concerns of Christ above all.

So that we may know that you believe yourselves to be called by God and that you profess the Christian faith, I ask you:

Page 31: *Please stand as you are able 1 UMH- United …...*Please stand as you are able 1 UMH-United Methodist Hymnal TFWS- The Faith We Sing 2012 Central Texas Annual Conference Worship Book

Bishop – Do you trust that God has called you to the life and work of commissioned or ordained ministry? Candidates – I do so trust. Bishop – Do you believe in the Triune God, and confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Candidates – I do so believe and confess. Bishop – Are you persuaded that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments contain all things necessary for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, and are the unique and authoritative standard for the Church’s faith and life? Candidates – I am so persuaded, by God’s grace. Bishop – Will you be faithful in prayer, in the study of the Holy Scriptures, and with the help of the Holy Spirit continually rekindle the gift of God that is in you? Candidates – I will, God being my helper. Bishop – Will you be loyal to The United Methodist Church accepting its order, liturgy, doctrine, and discipline, committing yourself to be accountable with those serving with you, and to the Bishop and those who are appointed to supervise your ministry? Candidates – I will, God being my helper. Bishop – May God, who has given you the will to do these things, give you grace to perform them, that the work begun in you may be brought to perfection. All – Amen.

The Bishop calls the people to pray. Let us offer a few moments of silent prayer for these persons to be commissioned or ordained by God and the Church.

The people pray in silence

Bishop – We give you thanks, Living God, that in your great love you sent Jesus Christ, your only begotten Son, to take the form of a servant of all. You have taught us, by His word and example, that whoever would be great among us must be servant of all.

Give to these your servants the grace and power they need to serve you in this ministry. Make them faithful pastors, patient teachers, humble servants, and wise counselors. Enable them to serve without reproach, to proclaim the gospel of salvation, and to offer with all your people spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

All – Amen.

The Symbols of Commissioning and Ordination

In the service of commissioning and ordination the primary sign and act is the laying on of hands. The laying on of hands is an ancient practice continuing through the life of the Church. Beginning in the Acts of the Apostles we find Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, and Saul being led by the Holy Spirit and the church in Antioch responded, “Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.” (Acts 13:3) The laying on of hands and prayer invokes the Spirit to be active in the person for the office to which God has called them. To all those being commissioned, a copy of The United Methodist Book of Worship is given. The gift of The United Methodist Book of Worship reminds those commissioned as Elder and Deacon they are called to lead the faithful in worship. Those being ordained receive a stole and a Bible. The stole historically reminded those being ordained they are yoked to Christ as a servant to the Church. The Bible is given as the primary tool for proclaiming and teaching the word of God to the people of God. These symbols of ordination and commissioning are visual reminders given by the Church to remind each one called to ordained ministry of God’s intimate call on their life. It is by the grace of God these individuals have been called to serve Christ’s holy Church in ordered ministry.

SERVICE OF REPENTANCE

8:30 a.m. - Wednesday, June 6, 2012 Chisholm Hall, Waco Convention Center

Please Enter in Silence

We Stand in Silence Rev. Dr. Virginia Bassford

My Friends, I have been asked to show you my heart. I am glad to have a chance to do so. I want the white people to understand my people. Some of you think an Indian is like a wild animal. This is a great mistake. I will tell you all about our people, and then you can judge whether an Indian is a man or not…. It does not require many words to

speak the truth. What I have to say will come from my heart, and I will speak with a straight tongue. -- Inmutooyahlatlat (Chief Joseph), Nez Perce

Leader –

When Joseph spoke these words in a Washington, D.C., interview more than a century ago, most Americans were not ready to listen. For four hundred years, the world had failed to understand Indian people, and the watchword of the day was change – change for Indian people, not understanding of them.

And so, the United States government furthered what the Europeans had initiated, and Indian nations were herded onto military reservations and kept under close supervision. As part of an aggressive campaign to assimilate them into American society, government boarding schools were established whose stated purpose was the obliteration of Indian languages and the total eradication of cultures. Indian parents experienced the agonizing pain of having their children forcibly wrenched from them and sent to these schools to become “civilized.” Acculturation was unleashed as a weapon of war.

The tragedy was that many victims of the boarding school experience came away with a distorted perception of themselves. For years, they had been told that to be Indian was bad and the “good Indians” were those who were able to throw the past away and become Americans. Successful “civilized” Indians were held up as role models and placed in positions of authority by the federal government in matters relating to Indian affairs.

Today, the exploits of white heroes are taught in elementary schools. Indian children, who are forced to attend these schools, are told that George Washington is a hero…. but white children never learn what Indian children know – that George Washington killed Indians….

In American schools, Indian children are taught that Abraham Lincoln emancipated slaves. But white children are never told that this emancipation only pertained to black slaves. Indian slavery existed in California until long after the Civil war….

Ulysses S. Grant was responsible for the death of Apaches; Andrew Jackson killed Creek, Seminole and Cherokee; Thomas Jefferson sanctioned the massacre of Shawnee and Kickapoo in the Ohio Valley….

My Brothers and Sisters… if we are in Christ… if we are to be a New Creation… then the way to go forward is to first go back. Today we recognize our Sin in a desire to move forward in new awareness and new relationship. The previous excerpts I have just read to you are from a book entitled, From the Heart: Voices of the American Indian, edited by Lee Miller; so too are the passages crafted into a litany below. We are invited to enter into a time of collective remembrance and repentance.

The members of each district and those gathered on the platform are invited to read aloud as indicated below.

North District – The earth is our mother. She nourishes us; that which we put into the ground she returns to us, and healing plants she gives us likewise. If we are wounded, we go to our mother and seek to lay the wounded part against her, to be healed.

-- Bedagi (Big Thunder), Penobscot

West District – We were driven from our corn last year by the people about Kennebeck, and many of us died. We had no powder and shot to kill venison and foul with, to prevent it. If you English were our friends as you pretend you are, you would not suffer us to starve as we did.

-- Madokawando, Penobscot

Central District – Why do you sell brandy to our young men? They are not used to it – it makes them crazy. Even your own people, who are accustomed to strong liquors, sometimes become drunk and fight with knives. Sell no more strong drink to the Indians, if you would avoid mischief.

-- Hackensack delegation

Platform Participants – The white people never cared for land or deer or bear…. When we dig roots we make little holes. When we build houses, we make little holes…. We shake down acorns and pinenuts. We don’t chop down the trees. We only use dead wood. But the white people plow up the ground, pull down the trees, kill everything…. The spirit of the land hates them. They blast out trees and stir it up to its depths. They saw up the trees. That hurts them. The Indians never hurt anything, but the white people destroy all. They blast rocks and scatter them on the earth. The rock says, “Don’t. You are hurting me.” But the white people pay no attention. When the Indians use rocks, they take little round ones for their cooking…. How can the spirit of the earth like the White man? … Everywhere the white man has touched it, it is sore.

-- Kate Luckie, Wintu

Leader – It is said that in the Christian’s guide, that God is merciful, and they that are his followers are like him. How much mercy do you think has been shown towards Indians, their wives and their children? Not much, we think. No…. Have you any regard for your wives and children, for those delicate sons and daughters? Would you like to see them slain and laid in heaps, and their bodies devoured by the vultures and wild beasts of prey? and their bones bleaching in the sun and air, till they moulder away, or were covered by the falling leaves of the forest, and not resist? No. Your hearts would break grief, and with all the religion and knowledge you have, it would not impede your force to take vengeance upon your foe, that had so cruelly conducted thus…. Can, or do you think we have no feeling?

--William Apess, Pequot

South District – When you first came to our coasts, you sometimes had no food; we gave you our beans and corn, and relieved you with our oysters and fish; and now, for recompense, you murder our people.

-- (Name not given), Montauk

Platform Participants – The Ottawas were greatly reduced in numbers on account of the small-pox…. This small-pox was sold to them shut up in a tin box, with the strict injunction not to open their box on their way homeward, but only when they should reach their country; and that this box contained something that would do them great good, and their people! … Accordingly, after they reached home they opened the box; but behold there was another tin box inside, smaller … and when they opened the last one they found nothing but mouldy particles in this last little box! … But alas, alas! Pretty soon burst out a terrible sickness among them…. Lodge after lodge was totally vacated – nothing but the dead bodies lying here and there in their lodges – entire families being swept off with the ravages of this terrible disease…. A continuous village some fifteen or sixteen miles long … was entirely depopulated and laid waste….

-- Andrew Blackbird, Odawa

East District – I have seen two generations of my people die. Not a man of the two generations is alive now but myself. I know the difference between peace and war better than any men in my country…. Why will you take by force what you may have quietly by love? Why will you destroy us who supply you with food? What can you get by war?

-- Wahunsonacock, Powhatan

Leader – We proceeded… to burn the Indian cabins. Some of the men seemed to enjoy this cruel work, laughing heartily at the curling flames, but to me it appeared a shocking sight…. But when we came… to cut down the fields of corn, I could scarcely refrain from tears…. I saw everywhere around, the footsteps of little Indian children, where they had lately played under the shade of their rustling corn. When we are gone, thought I, they will return and… with tearful eyes, they will ask their mothers, and the reply will be, “The white people did it, -- the Christians did it!”

-- Lieutenant Francis Marion, British Army

West District – I noticed … a small group of Indians who sat under a tree … all were dirty, ragged, and lean…. Soon an Indian woman and a young girl … hurried into the group, laid down … packs and opened them…. I could see spread out there some dingy meat, evidently waste from a butcher’s shop, some discarded scraps of stale bread, and other stray odds and ends of food…. I felt a wave of fury toward our government’s whole Indian policy….

-- Thomas Tibbles, United States

East District – They told us that Indian ways were bad. They said we must get civilized. I remember that word too. It means “be like the white man.” …And the books told how bad the Indians had been to the white men – burning their towns and killing their women and children…. We all wore white man’s clothes and ate white man’s food and went to white man’s churches and spoke white man’s talk. And so after a while we also began to say Indians were bad. We laughed at our own people and their blankets and cooking pots and sacred societies and dances….

-- Sun Elk, Taos

North District – And so the days passed by, and the changes slowly came to settle within me…. Gone were the vivid pictures of my parents, sisters and brothers. Only a blurred vision of what used to be. Desperately, I tried to cling to the faded past which was slowly being erased from my mind.

-- Metha Bercier, Turtle Mountain Chippewa

South District – Does this generation love justice enough to ask that it be shown to the red men [women and children]? Have we not as a people fixed the brutal maxim in our language, “the only good Indian is a dead Indian?” We laugh at the saying now as a good jest, but the cheeks of our descendants will redden with shame when the read the coarse brutality of our wit.

-- Fletcher Johnson, United States Central District – Before you determine on a measure so unjust, look up to God, who has made us as well as you. We hope He will not permit you to destroy the whole of our nation…. The land we live on, our fathers received from God, and they transmitted it to us, for our children, and we cannot part with it.

-- Cornplanter, Seneca

All – I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just

-- Thomas Jefferson, United States

Leader – The blood that has been spilled by generations of Native Americans is not something for which we are able to say, “I’m sorry!” and walk away. True repentance means that we change our ways; we work to right the wrongs. How can we make what is so wrong, right, as long as we continue to deny the atrocity happened in the first place?

All – God forgive us for those times when we just don’t want to know the truth and we ignore it.

Leader – In the words of Rev. Dr. George E. Tinker of the Osage Nation, General Conference 2012: My friends, there’s a lot of history to be owned. And there’s a lot of this stuff that has yet to be learned, and it’s being concealed from you. You have to do the work now to go dig it up, spade the ground, and make fertile soul for the seed of the Gospel to grow. That’s your job now. Together, all of us repenting, all of us restoring balance to the world. It’s not just about making disciples for Jesus Christ; it really is about transforming the world, because the world we have inherited is in bad, bad shape.

If we are to truly repent, the Hebrew word is shoove, if we are to turn around, begin anew, the first step is to listen to the story; to stand with our Native American brothers and sisters; to learn from them; to work with them on their terms – not ours. This kind of repentance takes time… more than a 20 minute service of worship.

All – God, we rush through life, and take so little notice of “the other.” Forgive us we pray. Help us to step back and allow you to recreate relationships among us. Let this prayer begin a new way of seeing, a new way of being. May we work together and seek your kingdom of shalom – wholeness and harmony of body, self, spirit, mind, and neighbor.
