Automated part handling, process optimization and cost savings for your plant

Automated handling, especially when the parts are transported in bulk, offers great potential for process optimization and cost savings. Automated bin unloading is not just one task, but comprises a range of applications, depending on the specific needs of the process and the parts.

In automotive part handling, it is necessary to have a flexible and reliable vision system that can be adapted to different system setups, depending on the specific needs.

Limited 3D part localization capabilities of standard vision systems have been one of the main reasons why automated bin picking systems are not commonly deployed. One of the main restrictions is the absence of pre-set functionality and lack of reliable functions for tasks like calibration and verification of free space available for gripper fingers.

The PLB vision system from SICK supports flexible system setups for a wide range of applications. The CAD-based 3D part localization software is designed

for precise localization of randomly orientated parts in bins and boxes. Thanks to our advanced 3D camera, high-quality and detailed 3D images are captured from metal parts.

This new vision system makes it possible to implement more bin unloading applications than ever before and enables parts to be easily introduced into existing work cells.

The PLB creates a cost-effective solution for robotic part handling systems and helps optimize your plant!

Applications

SICk’s PLB vision system is designed for precise localization of randomly orientated parts in bins and boxes. Blanks, casted or forged metal parts are easily located and loaded in various automotive applications.

Machine loading operationsThe task of loading turning machines or feeder systems with blanks is common in automotive component production. Significant cost savings can be gained by introducing precise and flexible handling of raw material stored in bulk. The PLB makes it very easy to introduce new part sizes during production.

Foundry and forging operationsDuring component manufacturing for power train and chassis, it is cost-effective to transport the components in bulk between operations. Robot automated handling of the components offers cost optimization in terms of space savings and minimized operational cost for the handling system. With the flexibility of the PLB, it is easy to configure part localization for a wide range of components.

Product descriptionSICK’s PLB vision system is designed for precise localization of randomly orien-tated parts in bins and boxes. It enables the easy introduction of new parts into existing work cells and short part changeover time by using CAD-based 3D shape matching part localization soft-ware. The PLB’s performance supports high production rates. The vision system consists of a 3D camera, part localiza-tion software and tools for easy integra-tion and communication. The system’s

advanced 3D camera ensures superior image quality and provides high immu-nity to ambient light. Field-proven tools and functions for calibration, communi-cation with a robot and PLC, as well as checking for free gripping position, make it easier to integrate the system into production. The hardware and software are already integrated and pre-set for the application.
