GREENER WAYS TO KEEP WARM
Not all winter clothes have to be unflattering. Dress warmly this winter! It will help you brave the cold and practice green living.
Open the curtains and blinds when the sun is out and it will naturally warm your home up. Just make sure you close them again when the sun goes down to keep that warmth inside!
Get active and exercise! A healthy body is generally more tolerant of the cold and getting your heart rate and metabolism going will warm your body up in no time!
Make yourself a hot cup of tea or Milo and get up close to someone you love for a night on the couch, whether it’s a significant other, a friend or a cuddly pet. It’s a fun way to spend a cold night in!

IT’S EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP IN OUR DAILY LIVES
AND FORGET ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND US.
Many of us are so busy keeping up with uni, work
and our social lives that we barely even get a
chance to stop and smell the roses, well more like
the smog and car fumes swirling all around us!
World Environment Day started from a United
Nations conference on the Human Environment
back in 1972. It has been held every year since on
the 5th of June with different nations taking on the
hosting role. Every year a theme is set to coincide
with hot topics and issues that are prevalent at the
time regarding the environment.
In 2012 Brazil are playing host to World Environment
Day and the theme is, ‘Green Economy: Does it
include you?’ The theming of this year’s event has
been aimed to include everyone across the world.
The question asks people to have a think about
what is happening in their home countries around
climate change and environmental issues and to
ask themselves whether they feel involved and
aware about these issues?
The UN Environmental Program defines the ‘Green
Economy’ as one that results in improved human
well-being and social equity, while significantly
reducing environmental risks and ecological
scarcities. As the Green Economy is about
social equity and inclusiveness, the UN wants to
encourage everyone to be involved and learn
more about what is going on.
To support this, UTS and Sydney Institute of TAFE
will be combining to host Green Week from Monday
4 June to Friday 8 June. The week will showcase a
range of activities and events for students to get
involved in and learn more about key issues. There
will be documentary screenings, info sessions,
debates and fun opportunities such as photo
competitions and a recycled fashion parade!
Make sure you get involved and learn more
about the Green Economy and how you can
include yourself!

Stella McCartneyStella McCartney proves that fashion doesn’t have to come at the
expense of cruelty to animals. She has been a long time advocate of
alternatives to animal products and is set to release an organic capsule
collection, further reinforcing the label as an eco-fashion pioneer
EDUNEDUN was created by Bono & wife Ali Hewson to encourage fair trade
practices. The label encapsulates sustainable employment in worldwide
developing countries. Being the top pick for fashion in the eco- market
is an added bonus!
People TreeEnvisioned by actress Emma Watson, this label sees to improve the
lives and environments of those involved in the production of their
garments. People Tree aims to bring benefits to as many people and
the planet by alleviating poverty in the world’s most marginalized
communities in the world, use ecologically sound production methods
to minimize environmental impact and sourcing local produce free from
chemicals, toxins and non- biodegradable materials. They also allow
sufficient time for production of garments by hand, reducing the “sweat-
shop” environment.
Beyond SkinBeyond Skin is an ethical fashion label that creates handmade vegan
shoes and boots. The footwear is vegetarian and “genuinely not
leather”, using recycled materials and working closely with production
factories to ensure their carbon footprint is as minimal as possible.
KuyichiIn 2000, Solidaridad wanted to introduce organic cotton into the
fashion industry, after discovering the cotton industry provided great
pollution and poverty to the indigenous cultures surrounding the cotton
production. Solidaridad tried in vain to get the big players in the denim
industry to use organic cotton but none of them would budge. Amid the
rejection Kuyichi was formed to produce their own organic clothing line.
Kuyichi also takes care about the social circumstances of the people
that grow and produce their cotton and garments.

IF YOU’VE GOT THE TIME, WE’VE GOT
THE SPACE!If you haven't noticed all the
construction sites and overly large
holes in the ground around cam-
pus then you've been living under
a rock for the past 6 months! UTS
is currently in the middle of the
'Campus Master Plan' project which
is transforming the entire campus
into state of the art facilities for
students.
Along with the construction of
many brand new buildings, the
Master Plan project includes the
creation of interactive teaching
and learning spaces located
throughout the campus. These
areas are conducive to either
group or individual study sessions,
with all areas fitted out with
wireless internet, power points
for laptops and a study necessity,
comfortable furniture!
Group study areas feature shared
work tables fitted out with screens
that can be connected to personal
laptops and large open spaces for
group collaboration.
The interactive are located
throughout the campus so
wherever your classes are located
you shouldn't be too far from one
of them. Two of the more recent
additions are the study spaces in
Building 6 and the Green Room in
Building 5.
“The green room in the Haymarket campus, the Library, new study areas in Building 6 and the tower building are great places to sit down by yourself or in groups for a study session,” said Yannick Gachter, studying BA
Business & IT.
As well as being a great facility
to utilise for studying, the spaces
have a great feel about them. The
colours are bright and inviting
which can sometimes help you
forget the reason why you arrived
there in the first place!
So if you're looking for a great
place to study this exam period
then PLAYGROUND recommends the
interactive teaching and learning
spaces! Just grab a laptop and
head to one of the following
locations to get your study
done and ace your exams this
semester!

Zoe Chan How old are you?
Z: 25 years old
What course are you doing?
Z: MBA
Where do you like to study?
Z: My living room or UTS study rooms, basically any room with a big table.
What helps you study?
Z: I love reading my notes out loud so I get thirsty easily! I keep a big jug of water with me as drinking it keeps my mind fresher then when I drink coffee.
Do you like to listen to music when you study?
Z: I only listen to pure music, song lyrics always distract me.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to a first year student?
Z: Join the network café and meet some seniors in your course that can give you good advice.
What’s the best piece of advice you were given about studying?
Z: Work hard in every one of your assignments at the beginning of the semester and then there will be much less pressure for the exam.
What is your exam vice?
Z: I love going to sleep really early (say 9pm) and get up at 2am and study until the exam starts. If I do this I believe that I have done my best, god will do the rest.
What are you looking forward to doing after exams finish?
Z: Non-stop sleeping for at least 48 hours, then maybe a massage afterwards!
Yannick Gachter How old are you?
Y: 21 years old
What course are you doing?
Y: BA Business & BA IT
Where do you like to study?
Y: Preferably in my room or at a large table at Uni with friends.
What helps you study?
Y: Pressure and having a group of friends to study with.
Do you like to listen to music when you study?
Y: I don’t listen to music when studying for exams, however if I’m working on practice exercises, I don’t mind a bit of music in the background.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to a first year student?
Y: Study step-by-step, concentrate on one thing at a time and most importantly, repetition, repetition, repetition. For most of us, repetition is the only way to push information into our long-term memory.
What’s the best piece of advice you were given about studying?
Y: Don’t stress and concentrate on one thing at a time.
What is your exam vice?
Y: I get so tired just before starting an exam that I could fall asleep while waiting for the supervisors to say: “You may begin”.
What are you looking forward to doing after exams finish?
Y: Catching up with friends, having time to work on projects outside of my university course, travelling and having time for myself.

you start to play you just can’t stop.
QUIRKY FACT: We are fiends for team costumes at parties!
SOCIAL EVENTS: We hold social events with SUUFA
(Sydney Uni’s Ultimate Frisbee Club) once a
semester, plus our own small social events each

photography group of enthusiasts who gather
together to take photos and share experiences
together. Exposure provides workshops, photo
shoots and photo reviews every semester. We
also have monthly competitions!

WHY PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO JOIN: Exposure is not
just a photography club, it’s a social club too! You
can meet people from different faculties around uni
and see Sydney in a photographic way.
SOCIAL EVENTS: Each semester, we have three
photography workshops, three photo shoots and
three pizza nights.
JOIN US: New members can join during our events
and sign up on the day. Membership is $10 a year

LIBBY [21] KRISHNAT [18]
DEAN [20] CASSIE [18]
MAYA [18]
WHAT MADE YOU PARTICIPATE IN ‘LIVE BELOW THE LINE’?h:I found out about it because one of my friends
did it last year. I couldn’t believe that 1.4 billion
people live below the extreme poverty line and
I was horrified when I thought about how much
money I spent on unnecessary clothes and
excessive food. I thought it was a great idea
because as well as raising money for people who
need it, it really gets people talking and thinking.
WHAT KIND OF FOOD DID YOU SURVIVE ON FOR THE WEEK?h:I managed to get a fairly good range of food:
oats, milk, rice, lentils and some vegetables.
Unfortunately I had a whole lot of oats and not
much of anything else so it was tough to formulate
decent meals.
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE WHICH FOODS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR $10 BUDGET?h:I basically tried to cover all the food groups
in the cheapest way possible, which meant I
was getting most of the nutrients I needed but
nowhere near enough food in general. I’d probably
do things a bit differently next time.
DID PARTICIPATING IN THIS CHALLENGE MAKE YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY/ BUY GROCERIES?h:Yes, it made me realise how cheap and easy it is
to make meals from really simple raw ingredients.
It also confirmed that the cheapest foods are just
as good as their big brand counterparts. It’s so
unnecessary to spend money on packaged and
processed food, when that cash could be used for
something much more important.
WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LIVE BELOW THE LINE CHALLENGE?h:I found Live below the Line to be really difficult,
but that’s exactly why I would encourage others
to participate. Just having a tiny taste of how so
many people live every single day makes you
exceptionally appreciative of what you have.
Almost a quarter of the population of the world
lives on less than $2 a day, and that includes not
just their food but clothing, shelter and education.
I’m extremely grateful for the circumstances that I’m
in, and it’s great when we can use what we have to
do something for those who aren’t as fortunate.
HOW DID YOU FEEL AT THE END OF THE CHALLENGE?h:By the end of the week I was extremely tired
and hungry. I was really relieved when I could
finally eat anything I wanted and thankful that
I’m lucky enough to live above the line. It was
upsetting to experience (even to a small degree)
what life is like for those living in extreme poverty
and I was really proud to be part of something
that will help.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED?h:Not having enough food to eat! Seriously I’ve
heard people complain during Live below the Line
about caffeine withdrawals or about how upset
they were that they had to go a whole week
without Tim Tams. I didn’t get any of that, I was
just perpetually hungry. An hour after I’d had
lunch (something like 200mL of watery soup) I’d
be hungry again and have to wait hours before
my meager dinner. I felt tired all the time and had
trouble concentrating. I missed really simple foods
like bread and potatoes and felt too exhausted to
do any of my normal social activities.
WHAT WAS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF THE EXPERIENCE?h:I was really pleased by the generosity of my
friends and family. Most of my friends don’t have a
lot of money, and some of them really dug deep to
support this cause. Everyone I knew tried to offer me
food, which I obviously couldn’t take because that’s
just cheating. It’s rewarding to know you’re doing
something that has made people stop and think.
