Gene Smith wasappointed as ArizonaState University’s 18th

director of athletics on July27, 2000. Smith arrived atASU as no stranger to colle-giate athletics, serving asathletics director at IowaState University for sevenyears prior to coming toASU. Smith was also the ath-letics director at Eastern

Michigan University (1986-93).In his three years at Arizona State, Smith has started

his own legacy of success in Tempe. He has hired nation-ally regarded coaches in football, soccer, wrestling, women’s golf, water polo and volleyball while overseeingeach of ASU’s 22-sports programs, many of which haveseen unprecedented competitive success the past threeyears. Smith also helped to finish a $30 million capitalcampaign, which in part funded the construction of the$19 million Ed and Nadine Carson Student-AthleteCenter, completed in 2002. The state-of-the-art facilityaffords ASU one of the finest student-athlete centers inthe country, including perhaps the premier weight roomand sports rehabilitation areas.

In his first three years at ASU—Smith, who wasnamed the 2003 Division I West Region AthleticsDirector of the Year by the National Association ofCollegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)—has createda winning environment dedicated to building strongerprograms and providing student-athletes the opportuni-ty to be successful academically, athletically and social-ly. ISU’s student-ath-letes were community leaders, participating in a varietyof local and regional initiatives that demonstrate theathletics department’s proactive outreach under Smith’sleadership.

Smith’s strong reputation among his peers wasaffirmed in June 1994 when the Notre Dame graduatewas named president of NACDA. In 1991, Smith wasappointed to a four-year term on NACDA’s 32-memberexecutive committee. In 1992, he was elected third vicepresident of the organization and was named to theDivision I-A Executive Committee. He was elected firstvice president of NACDA in 1993.
