Canadian born Julia Adam received her early training in her hometown of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and at age thirteen began studies at the National Ballet School of Canada in Toronto, graduating in 1983. Upon receiving a Canada Council Grant, Ms. Adam spent a year traveling, exploring the European art and dance scene along with apprenticing with the National Ballet of Canada. She then joined the company under the direction of Erik Bruhn. In 1988, Ms. Adam joined San Francisco Ballet, where she finished the remainder of her dancing career, gaining prestige as a principal dancer known for her lyricism, musicality and broadtheatrical range. She performed a wide range of roles in Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson’s diverse repertory for the Company and retired from dancing in the Spring 2002. Ms. Adam has created over 80 works for numerous companies including San Francisco Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Houston Ballet,

The Joffrey Ballet, Alberta Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theater, Colorado Ballet, Nashville Ballet and has created and staged over 10 works on Ballet Memphis where she was Artistic Associate from 2010 to 2013. Ms. Adam has created three story ballets for Diablo Ballet, The Little Prince, Once Upon a Time and The Nutcracker Suite. In 2014, Ms. Adam founded her own company, Julia Adam Dance, an ensemble of handpicked dancers performing in an open air theater built in beautiful West Marin. She continues to create new works for companies and win critical acclaim along with teaching and choreographing for young dancers at the Marin Ballet School in San Rafael.

Balanchine & Beyond February 19-21, 2021Featuring the joyous and energetic Who Cares? choreographed by George Balanchine; the romantic duet, Carousel (A Dance) choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon inspired by the Broadway Musical “Carousel”; the return of the hauntingly beautiful Berceuse by Penny Saunders; the comedic Frugivory by choreographer Bruno Roque; a new work by company dancer Michael Wells; and the Pas de Deux, variations and coda from the timeless fairytale, The Sleeping Beauty featuring the entire company.

Once Upon a Time April 9-10, 2021Julia Adam’s witty and sophisticated Once Upon a Time, where a young man accidentally �nds himself as the male lead in everyone’s favorite classic fairytales such as Cinderella, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and Little Red Riding Hood. With the introduction of new characters and fun plot twists, this full-length ballet will leave audiences of all ages believing in happily ever after.

Coppélia May 28-29, 2021Considered one of the best-loved classical ballets, this charming, lighthearted, romantic comedy staged by Artistic Director, Lauren Jonas, and Broadway choreographer, Sean Kelly, features a brash young protagonist, a doll that comes to life, and a dash of magic. Perfect for all ages, Coppélia will be accompanied by the Diablo Symphony Orchestra and include students from Diablo Ballet School.
