Starter

• Use Geomags and Polydrons to create 3D shapes (5 minutes)

• Discuss the properties of shapes created (5 mins)

• Ask if there are any special cases...

• Choose two to discuss.

• Identify a Platonic Solid

Page 3: Platonic2

Introduce Platonic Solids

• Discuss the concept of Platonic Solids

• Open question: How many do you think there are?

• How many can you make? (10 minutes)

• Put checklist up on the board

• Same number of regular faces meeting at each vertex

• Each face is the same regular shape

• Each vertex has the same number of faces

Page 4: Platonic2

There are only 5

• Lets look at the five in more detail:

• Look at table of each type, number of faces, number of vertices

• cube square 6 sides 8 vertices

• dodecahedron, pentagon, 12 sides, 20 vertices

• icosahedron, triangles, 20 sides, 12 vertices

• octahedron, triangles, 8 sides, 6 vertices

• tetrahedron, triangle, 4 sides, 4 vertices

Plenary

• Where have you seen these platonic solids in the world?

• Bring up photos...

Page 6: Platonic2

Extension

• Duals sheet - sketch the duals

• Can you make shapes with more than one type of regular face (Archimedian Solids)

• Patterns in a table
