unmenge an Innovati-onskraft, Know-how und letztlich exportfähigen
Stuff that dreams are made of…during the past century, plastics
and synthetic materials have had a great impact on our world, as
least as much as the Ferrari, the Internet and bob dylan. Polymeric
jacks of all trades are used to make completely new products,
pushing forward technical progress like no other material and
providing engineers with new possibilities. Whether for automobile
manufacturing or at construction sites, for packaging or in the
field of medicine, at home or for sport: the variety of possible
properties and uses is nearly unlimited, and the resulting
potential is far from being exhausted.
austria has a considerable amount of tradition with plastics and
synthetic materials, from machinery to raw materials and
processing, and an even more exciting and promising future. From
the right additives and processing to biodegradable materials, a
vast amount of innovation, know-how and exportable services and
products have been produced over the past decades.
an important factor that enables this growth is the country’s
excellent educational system. as one of the most successful and
economically healthy sectors, plastics offer a considerable number
of career opportunities for innovative, hard-working individuals,
and the domestic plastics field has done a great deal to ensure its
own future: few if any other business sectors offer so many
apprenticeships and opportunities to obtain vocational training
that produce highly qualified workers, whether at renowned
companies, schools and colleges, or universities.
For example, in the last few days of 2008, the university of
Leoben presented its first steps in establishing a European centre
of excellence for plastics technology. the intention of this
programme is to employ teaching and research for developing
plastics technology into an internationally out-standing field with
a great deal of renown, both abroad and in growth regions. the most
active in this field are the acR’s ofi-Kunststoffinstitut in
Vienna’s third district and the states of upper austria (e.g. with
the plastics cluster, which com-prises approximately 220 companies,
35,000 employees and six billion euros of annual turnover) and
Vorarlberg.
above-average investments in R&d represent another way in
which austrian plastics technology affects interna-tional
standards: by setting trends and paving the way for innovative
ideas and possibilities! ❚

The Engel company, as an individual brand, is the world’s
largest manufacturer of injection-moulding machines and one of the
leading firms in the sector of mechanical engineering for plastics,
and also produces injection-moulding machines for Lego building
blocks. the group is a source of all technological modules
necessary for plastics processing: injection-moulding machines for
ther-moplasts and elastomers and automation equipment. Indi-vidual
components are also competitive and market suc-cesses. With eight
factories in Europe, North america and asia and branches and agents
for more than 85 countries, Engel can provide optimum support
service around the globe, which helps its clients maintain a
competitive edge and achieve success through new technologies and
the most modern production equipment available.
at the Fakuma in late october 2008, Engel presented their newest
products, such as the compact duo pico, the e-victory with
servo-hydraulics and their expanded robot mo-dule lines. duo pico
means a minimal footprint and low weight thanks to a compact
two-platen clamping system, the highest possible energy efficiency
and an excellent cost/performance ratio. the e-victory is regarded
as the ideal machine for saving energy while manufacturing tools
with hydraulic core pullers and/or hot nozzles for use with
hydraulic quick clamping systems. In addition, the Engel ERc 43 has
been added to the line of linear robots. this closes the gap
between the ERc 63 and ERc 33 in the clamping force range of 110 to
1,500 metric tons - another of Engel’s contri-butions to improving
efficiency in injection moulding.

Starlinger & Co. Ges.m.b.H. of Vienna broke new
tech-nological ground in the mid-1950s with new and innova-tive
spooling frames developed especially for synthetic fi-bres. at the
time, such materials were just beginning to reach the European
market, and in 1963, the developer of polypropylene received the
Nobel Prize for her innovation. after mass production of circular
looms began, Starlinger turned increasingly into an exporter. the
company presen-ted its circular loom at the first austrian
exhibition of ma-chinery in beijing in 1973, and in the subsequent
years, dozens of complete projects for bags were sold to china. In
1990, Starlinger purchased a licence to manufacture tape-extrusion
systems and developed their own after that (the 400th was delivered
in 2006).

have enabled the company’s positive deve-lopment, resulting in
recognition in the form of the SolVin award for innovations in the

represents the state of the art of high-performance extrusion. the
advantages it offers are considerable energy savings together with
noteworthy increases in the speed at which casement sections can be
manufactured.
compared to conventional tools, tc-one requires nothing more
than a single vacuum pump, even at maxi-mum outputs, while four to
five are needed for comparable equipment, which consumes a great

become their focus. the Schweighofer Prize, con-sidered Europe’s
most important honour by the forestry and timber industry, was
awarded for an exciting joint innova-tion of amI and Linz’s K-Plus
wood competence centre. marketed as Hiperwood, this new material
beat out 70 entries in the wood products category, and is regarded
as an excellent alternative on the wood-plastic composites market.
In the past, such extruded materials were unsuitable for use in the
presence of high temperatures, as they lost strength and stability.
Hiperwood, a melamine-based composite, does not melt at even the
highest temperatures and could revolutionise the production of
pre-fab houses and windows.

granulate into EPS blocks or preforms (commonly known as
Styrofoam). depending on the design, EPS can insulate, absorb
shocks, repel moisture, resist pressure; it can also be formed into
complex shapes or given a wide spectrum of colours.
the main uses of Sunpor EPS are packaging and insula-ting board
for the world’s construction industry. a number of different
varieties are suitable for specific requirements. Economical use of
energy is becoming increasingly impor-tant, and the demand for
high-quality building insulation with it. another growth engine has
come into being over the past years, the “new markets” of central
and East Europe. about 85% of total production is exported to other
European countries and the Far East.
Reststofftechnik GesmbH of Henndorf, Salzburg, were founded in
1991 for the purpose of developing collection and disposal systems
that are suitable for waste packaging. the scope of the young
company’s activities grew with the demands put on it, and this
eventually led to its work for a few communities: establishing and
servicing recycling cen-tres, many of which were just being built
at the time; deve-loping disposal concepts for businesses in all
sectors; and searching for recycling methods for waste materials,
as the raw materials produced after they are treated possess a
great deal of economic potential.
In addition to the classic activities relating to disposal, the
company’s main focus is material utilisation of refuse. of the
60,000 metric tons that are collected each year, only about 6,000
are incinerated. a noteworthy event in the disposal industry was
the construction of Europe’s most

Evonik Fibres GmbH, the innovative manu-facturer of polyimide
products, established its reputation with P84 polyimide fibres in
the field of hot gas filtration. Polyimide powder P84 Nt unites the
out-standing properties of polyimide, such as high temperature
stability up to 350°, che-mical resistance, high mechanical
strength, a low friction coefficient and minimal abrasion. using
sinter technology, polyimide powder P84Nt can be manufactured into
semi-finished products and components, inclu-ding sockets,
bearings, guidances, sealing rings or constructive parts.
Industrial appli-cations profiting from this material’s
effec-tiveness range from the automotive industry and aviation to
home appliances and office machines. compounds with solid
lubricants like gra-phite, molybdenum sulfide or PtFE can be
applied for tribologically demanding appli-cations. this solid
lubrication makes conventional lubrication with oil or fat
unnecessary. Poly-imide powder can also be applied to PEEK or PtFE
materials to increase their dimensional thermostability. ❚
