Plastic is poisoning our oceans and a lot of that plastic comes from plastic beverage bottles. Stop using disposable plastic water bottles and switch to using filtered tap water in reusable water bottles. It's easy to do. It will help save the ocean. It will save you money.

Plastic Bottles&

Ocean Pollution

Page 2: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Oceans make up 97% of Earth’s water

Page 3: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Oceans feed us and sustain us

Page 4: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Most of the oxygen in our atmosphere is generated by the sea

Page 5: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Oceans drive our climate and weather

Page 6: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Our very lives depend on the ocean

Page 7: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Yet we’re poisoning the ocean with hundreds of millions of tons of plastic

Page 8: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Over 2 million plastic beverage bottles are used every 5 minutes in the U.S.

Page 9: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

As little as 10% of plastic bottles

are recycled

As little as 10% of plastic bottles are recycled

Page 10: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

The rest end up in landfills or in our oceans

Page 11: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

There is a garbage patch twice the size of Texas in the North Pacific

Page 12: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

100 million marine mammals and turtles in the north Pacific are killed every year by plastic in the ocean

Page 13: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

70-100% of North Pacific sea birds are affected by eating plastic. This albatross starved to death because it ate too much plastic trash.

Page 14: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Plastic fragments concentrate pollutants up to one million times ambient levels in sea water - making ingested plastic into poison pills

Page 15: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

So what? Think the ocean isn’t important?

Page 16: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Imagine Earth without it

Page 17: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Plastic is killing the ocean

Page 18: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Plastic is poisoning the fish you eat

Page 19: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

The fish you eat have likely ingested contaminated plastic. Nature can no longer produce organic fish in the ocean.

Page 20: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

What can YOU do?

Page 21: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Stop using plastic beverage bottles!

Page 22: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

8.8 billion gallons of bottled water were consumed in the U.S. in 2007

Page 23: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

That’s 232 16 oz. bottles per person a year

Page 24: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Only a small fraction are recycled

Page 25: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

Up to 63.4 BILLION plastic bottles are dumped into landfills and the ocean a year

Page 26: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

That’s 173,589,041 bottles every day

Page 27: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

120,548 plastic bottles end up in landfills or the ocean every minute

Page 28: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

THE CHALLENGE

Use reusable water bottles filled with filtered tap water

Page 29: Plastic Bottles & Ocean Pollution

If each person in the U.S. replaced their disposable bottled water with a reusable container filled with tap water, we’d keep BILLIONS of plastic water bottles out of the ocean
