Words to GROW by!“REAL” CHRISTMAS TREE CARE

LIKE THAT OF FLOWER BOUQUETA “real” Christmas tree, like a bouquet of flowers, likes to be cool and out of drafts.

Immediately upon its arrival at your home, make a fresh, straight cut (1/4 inch is enough) across the base of the trunk. Then place the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered area until you are ready to bring it indoors for mounting and trimming. Avoid letting the fresh cut dry out, because it will restrict subsequent water uptake.

But a tree stand that has a reservoir that hold a lot of water. Keep the reservoir filled, because a dry tree not only loses its needles and attractiveness, but it also becomes a fire hazard.

A Christmas tree may absorb a gallon of water the first 24 hours after mounting and several quarts a day thereafter, according to industry experts.

Locate the tree away from sources of heat, such as fireplaces, space heaters and television sets. Do not place it under a central space heaters and television sets. Do not place it under a central heating vent, because this accelerates the drying process.

Before installation, check the electrical lights and connections you use on the tree, and be sure other holiday decorations are in good working order to ensure a safe and joyous holiday season. Replace frayed cords with new sets and keep sockets filled with bulbs, even when some do not light.

Never use lighted candles or combustible tree decorations of any kind. Do not use lights designated for indoor use outdoors. Be careful not to overload electrical circuits.

Always unplug lights when you go to bed or leave the home.

SELECT LANDSCAPE SHRUBSFOR SPECIFIC SITES, PURPOSES

One of the most important considerations in landscaping is selecting the proper plant for the proper site and that rule particularly applies when planting shrubs.

How often do we see shrubs planted in a site where they are not adapted or being used for a purpose for which they are not suited.

Adaptability relates to a plant=s ability to survive under the growing conditions to which it is exposed B such as temperature, soil moisture, other soil factors (texture, pH, etc.), exposure and many other factors.

In addition to selecting shrubs for specific sites based on adaptability, shrubs can be chosen for certain characteristics or landscape purposes. These may include growth habit, flowering, growth rate, foliage characteristics or ability to attract wildlife.

The following listing provides information on shrubs for showy foliage in the shade, shrubs for blooms in the shade, shrubs for wet sites, shrubs for dry sites, shrubs with berries/fruit, shrubs with long blooming periods, shrubs for evergreen hedges/screens, shrubs for all foliage color, shrubs with fragrant blooms and shrubs to attract butterflies.

Shrubs for showy foliage in the shade include: oakleaf hydrangea, Virginia willow, nandina, fatsia, mahonia, clethra and aucuba.

Shrubs for blooms in the shade: sweet olive, gardenia, oakleaf hydrangea, azaleas, nandina, camellia and sasanqua.

Shrubs for wet sites: buttonbush, wax myrtle, devilwood and Virginia willow.

Shrubs for dry sites: junipers, spireas, Chinese hollies, yaupon, oleander, sago palm, barberry, Indian hawthorn, nandina, butterfly bush and sumacs.

Shrubs with berries/fruit: beautyberry, nandina, pyracantha, Burford holly, Indian cherry, mahonia, Oregon grape holly and strawberry euonymus.

Shrubs with long blooming periods: butterfly bush, swamp cyrilla, althea, Chinese hibiscus, sweet olive, sasanqua, chaste tree, abelia and Indian hawthorn.

Shrubs for evergreen hedged/screens: Japanese yew, Japanese holly, Chinese holly, azaleas, clethra, sasanqua, eleagnus, sweet olive, pittosporum, ligustrum, Florida anise and photina.

Shrubs for fall foliage color: oakleaf hydrangea, blueberry, Chinese witch hazel, sumacs, Virginia willow and clethra.

Shrubs with fragrant blooms: native azaleas, spicebush, gardenia, sweet olive, chinese witch hazel and winter honeysuckle.

Shrubs to attract butterflies: azaleas, ligustrum, buckeye, buttonbush, viburnum, butterfly bush and clethra.

Retail garden centers across Louisiana have the largest selection and availability of recommended shrubs during the spring.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTS 11.24.14

GENERALLY SPEAKING

Although the weather is unpredictable, the fishing is more dependable now that the trout have moved into the area.

Mixed weather patterns means more fishing where structure changes as the fish are not sure whether to dive deeper or stay more active, even as the bait moves capriciously on the tides. That means you need to prepare for both bottom fishing and cork fishing as well, because fickle fronts mean frustrated fish (say that three times quickly!). But at least the fish are there to be caught. Stay warm, stay active and be patient as the bite will come with time and experimentation. This column is filled with a great sense of loss to me of one of my two fishing buddies and long-time business associate, Bill Bindewald, died this week. I never could outfish this guy and took a lot of kidding because of it. Bill passed at age 69 on Monday after surviving a massive heart attack last year. Diabetes and a failing immune system along with an inability to produce white blood cells took his life but not his spirit. Bill loved to fish and spend time just being a South Louisiana outdoor sportsman. We plan on returning part of Bill’s ashes to the marsh waters he so loved.

MGM MARINA - redfish trout on front cold for reds. excellent week in canal and codcokc fishing. ducks did well with limits on ducks MGM has crazy trout action this early November. Limits are being caught in the canal, in Lake Laurier, Bay Round and Oak Bayou, along with the usual redfish harvest on the river’s west side. The dock fishermen are limiting out as well. Leona says the best time to dock fish is right before or right after a front moves through. Bring the family down and settle in for a day of leisurely fishing off MGM’s dock for very little money and lots of speck action! MGM MARINA 504-656-2267.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291. Although the weather can’t make up its mind if it’s winter or summer, one thing is for sure down here in South Plaquemines. The redfish are tearing it up. If you’re looking for a good time and ready to fill your ice chest, come on down Highway 23 and put in at your favorite marina. In Buras, go see Boopie at Buras Marina Launch, cross the river and head to Quarantine Bay. Be aware of the water levels so you don’t run aground, then start fishing all the points and cuts all the way to California Bay. Bull reds will hold off the bank and smaller eaters will be tight to the shoreline. Also try all surrounding canals and pipelines. On the west side, fish the Buras Canal, fishing all cuts and drains heading toward Yellow Cotton Bay. The best baits have been any color of Gulp! shrimp under a cork or market shrimp. Remember - tides have been low, so be cautious when entering unfamiliar waters. Good luck and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS 504-912-8291

BESHEL’S BOAT LAUNCH - The big trout continue to feast in the areas around Beshel’s this fall. You can hardly go anywhere, from Four Horse Lake to Spanish Lake, all the way to Oak River and Baker’s Bay. These specks are good size,, from 18-21 inches. They’re being caught on Tsunamis, VuDu shrimp, topwater Bones and live shrimp. Try root beer, chartreuse and purple or pearl colors. BESHEL’S. 504-333-4469. BESHEL’S MARINA AND BOAT LAUNCH/BOAT SLIPS.

JAY QUIROS. OUT OF VENICE ALONG THE PASSES. 504-228-5895. Specks are in the river. Stop anywhere along the rocks and be prepared to fish the edges and the bottom. Use a Carolina rig or just use a heavier weight or rig up a heavier jughead with plastic and live or market bait. You’ll catch reds as well, along with flounders. On the ends of Southwest Pass, you can bring in bulls and tripletails. Watch for the fog in the morning. It’s a double whammy with the weird weather and tide patterns. Wait until late morning to go out. JAY QUIROS. ON A MISSION FISHING CHARTERS. 504-228-5895.

VENICE SPORTSMAN’S LODGE AT THE MARINA - DAN SKERMETTA. The Pure Fishing guys went out with Captain Dan Skermetta last week and had a great time feasting on autumn fishing in the parish. Patrick from Sweden, shown here with a nice cobia, works for Abu Garcia and of course caught the keeper using his company’s tackle. Paul Davis from South Carolina is shown here with one of his many Louisiana redfish. And Cameron with Abu Garcia out of South Carolina has his hands full with one of many bull reds caught during the four days on the water. The three man Abu team caught cobia, red snapper, specks, flounder and bass during their trip. CAPTAIN DAN SKERMETTA. 504-481-2320.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries celebrated the launch of its new Get Out and Fish! Program with its first fishing event last Saturday in Girard Park in Lafayette. The Department’s long-term goal is that these events will translate into future avid anglers who enjoy, conserve and even one day manage our great resources here in Louisiana.

LDWF hosted the event in partnership with the City of Lafayette to promote the new community fishing location, and attendance far surpassed staff’s expectations with over 250 registered anglers.

“The positive response from event participants was overwhelming,” said Fisheries Program Manager Danica Williams. “Anglers explained they often drive two or three hours simply to fish. The convenience of the short drive, even

walk for some, greatly appealed to those in search of a quality fishing destination close to home.”

The Get Out and Fish! Program seeks to increase the number of people with access to quality fishing. The program intends to recruit new anglers to the sport of fishing and promote outdoor activities for future generations. In order to accomplish this mission, public water bodies that meet the required specifications are chosen by LDWF biologists and stocked on a regular basis for up to one year. LDWF will promote the launch of each new site with a Get Out and Fish! event, so be sure to stay tuned for upcoming announcements regarding your area of the state.

Girard Park Pond, the first waterbody chosen for the new program, was stocked with 800 pounds of adult channel catfish in preparation for the event. LDWF will continue to stock the pond for up to one year, based on continued angler interest and participation. Beginning in December through February 2015, the pond will be stocked with adult rainbow trout followed by a stocking of adult channel catfish in warmer months of March through June.

With help from numerous sponsors, including The Beaver Club of Lafayette, Buckfins-N-Feathers, CC’s Coffee, Cajun Guns and Tackle, HDR, Inc., Home Depot, The Lafayette Consolidated Government, Louisiana Nursery, Pure Fishing, Raising

Cane’s and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Bass Fishing Team, families across Acadiana were introduced to a fun and free day of fishing. The first 100 registrants received a complimentary rod and reel and goodie bag, and every participant was entered into a number of prize drawings held throughout the day.

The Get Out and Fish! Program is hosted in conjunction with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation. The LWFF was formed to provide a means for individuals and corporations to become partners with the Department and Commission in the challenge of conserving Louisiana’s wildlife and fish resources.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is charged with managing and protecting Louisiana’s abundant

natural resources. For more information, visit us at www.wlf.la.gov, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ldwffb or follow us on Twitter @LDWF.

New Orleans Man Pleads Guilty to Selling Red Drum

A New Orleans man pleaded guilty to the illegal selling of game fish violations on Nov. 18 in the New Orleans Municipal Court in Orleans Parish.

Judge Desiree Charbonnet sentenced Paul Haptonstall, 35, to 120 days of imprisonment suspended and fined him $3,730.80 for the illegal selling of game fish.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division agents cited Haptonstall on June 13, 2014 in New Orleans for illegal selling of game fish and undersized fish.

Agents started the investigation after receiving complaints about the subject selling red drum in the New Orleans area. Haptonstall sold a total of 11 black drum, three sheepshead, two spotted seatrout, two catfish and 138 red drum to Special Operation agents throughout the investigation.

Agents involved in the case were the LDWF Special Operations Section, Sgt. Kris Bourgeois and Agent Jeffrey Farmer.

[email protected] By Paula JohnsonHi Everyone!

Hope you have been crafting away. Things are starting to get quite hectic for me. Have some orders I need to finish for customers and I really need to finish up the gifts for my granddaughter’s class. Time is really flying by!

I am really excited to tell you about something new Carlea’ and I just learned over the weekend. While I was waiting for her at dancing school on Sat. morning, one of the Mom’s had this circle thing that she was twining yarn on. Of course, being me, interested in crafts, I had to ask. She told me she was making a knitted hat for her grandmother. Since I had never seem this before I was full of questions. She gave me all the info I needed on making the hat and where to go and purchase the Knitting Loom Set and even the size yarn I should purchase. Needless to say, I headed to Michael’s as soon as I could. As it turned out I was really lucky, the Knitting Loom was on sale and so was the yarn!

Carlea’ and I made this hat together. We took it apart a couple times before we finished it but I think, all in all, we did a good job for the first time. We really enjoyed making this. Infact, we even made one for her doll, my husband, and will be making one for her brother, Dion, as soon as we get the yarn.

These are super simple to make! You can make one of these hats in about 2 hours depending on the size you choose. The kit comes with four rings, a hook, and a needle. I suggest you purchase an extra hook so you and your little crafter can make these really cool hats together.

I think she and I did pretty good for our very first hat. The instructions are included with the kit and you can go on line and find instructions and different styles. We plan on trying some of those also. Looks like another yarn buying trip is in my future.

This was so much fun to make and we spent quality time together. Or as she said, “Maw, we are making memories!” And that we did! So what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.

Ears of chihuahua, fur like silk and the disposition of a gentle giant, gorgeous Gracey is one of the sweetest girls you’ll ever know. To meet her is to fall instantly in love with her. Stop by and meet gorgeous Gracey today!

Shirley is a spunky, older girl who wants nothing more than to sit in your lap and love, love, love on you! She was picked up by LA/SPCA on Nov 3rd at 4420 Lonely Oaks Drive in New Orleans East. Meet Star! She is a beautiful 4 year old Shepherd mix. Star plays well with other male dogs her size but doesn’t really like female dogs. She would also do best in a home with no cats. Star enjoys going on long walks and playing in water. She loves getting her belly rubbed and being brushed. :) Star is spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on shots. Come meet Star at PAWS today!

This lovable feline is Tabitha. She is laidback and mellow when it’s time for a nap. Laying in your lap would be the perfect spot for her. When it’s playtime, Tabitha likes to play with all kinds of toys and climbing. Having a cat tree would be great fun for her and you as you watch her have so much fun! Can Tabitha come home with you?

Fall Into Fitness 2014 has ended and the stats are incredible - 404.5 pounds and 497 inches lost. Strength, determination, consistency and perseverance of 70 individuals have led to amazing results and undeniable success. The work these individuals have put in over the past 8 weeks is obvious, on every smaller hip, waist and thigh. The attitude of the group as a whole is the biggest change of all – SMILES from ear to ear.

The banquet began with a compilation of some substantial numbers including: laps run in the parking lots, number of flights of stairs climbed, minutes planks were held, hours of training, miles run in races, and countless push-ups, crunches, sit ups and burpees. Emotional speeches were made by select participants who spoke on overcoming real life obstacles and finding a way to make the program work for them, further inspiring others to continue toward their goals. Certificates were given to each participant, by their team trainer, for sticking it out and working hard for their results. A board member then gave an update on the upcoming additions to the Y, including a gymnasium and running track. All present applauded.

Finally, the winners were announced. First place went to BLUE TEAM, with second place going to PURPLE TEAM and third place to GREEN TEAM. Individual winners were: MOST POINTS – Meri – with over 220, BIGGEST LOSER FEMALE – Tara and BIGGEST LOSER MALE – Chad – who each lost over 20lbs and 15 inches. The challenge has concluded and with that the establishment of TEAM FIT. As everyone ate, drank and carried on merrily, participants spoke of how this was just the beginning for them and they would be back at the Y on Monday.

I had 3 days booked with the same guys. This was a trip for Fishon Guide Service. They only wanted bull reds. The first day had small craft warnings and the north wind had everything stirred up. . This was the only protected beach from Empire jetties to tiger pass. Of 6 boats struggling in the area none of us found anything. These were our actual conditions and water color all day no matter where we went.

The second day was a different story. We made a long run south and I made a few stops along the way just to see how much things got messed up the last few days. They sure did. I noticed the river looked a bit cleaner but when I went through the first spillway the water was still dirty. Even stopped there with another guide and neither of us liked it. We still gave it a try.

One other boat goes directly to the beach but I divert and check out another place before getting to my targeted destination. Once we get to the beach the action starts on the second cast.

We are now 100% better than yesterday with 1 fish. We work this area and soon have another one hit. This one throws the hook after a short fight. As I start to work the area a bit more we have another good strike and a drag burning run. We loose this one also. Saw and heard this one break the line or so I thought. When I looked the hook had broken. Must have been a rust or weak spot I did not notice. 1 for 3 not good. We landed our fourth so we were back to a 50% average.

Still plugging away and loose the next. About this time I call in the other boat that went there before I did. He was further past where I started and only had 2 strikes. I called him into where I was. As he pulls up we are on another bull red.

They pull up right behind us and instantly hook up with a double. My boat hooks up as I am watching them. The guy on the fish said “He is spooling me”. I look up and it is too late. My knot held at the reel but when it came tight it snapped at the hook end. At least I got all my line back. We are loosing too many fish but the guys are very happy with some great action. I was struggling to stay above the 50% average.

We had a catch and lose battle going on all day with the bulls. Our final count was 9 of 16 so we ended up above the 50% average. That is like having a winning season although not ending up on the top.

Our biggest of the day was a 32 pound black drum. This was not counted in with our bull red count. We picked it up when looking for some meat fish.

The day ended up with a lot of stories to be shared and some fish to clean.
