What is a plant?

Over 350,000 species identified

Most of life on Earth wouldn’t be possible without them

Adapted to nearly every environment on Earth

See if you can list the major parts of this plant…

Plant CellsPlants are made of cells, just like other living things

Contains chlorophyll-most plants green

Need this to make own food

controls water content of cell

Pigment are also stored here; make flowers red, blue, purple

Provides structure And

protection

jellylike material outside the cell nucleus in which the organelles are located

Controls many of the functions of the cell

Plant Protection and Support• Cuticle- a waxy, protective layer on the surface

of a plant; slows loss of water(demonstration and lab)

Lab: Wax paper…. Just as the cuticle….• Cellulose- chemical compound plants can

make out of sugar; strengthens cell walls

Classification of Plants

Vascular Plants• Have tubelike structures

that carry water, nutrients, and other substances throughout the plant

Nonvascular Plants• Do not have tubelike

structures, use other ways to move water and substances
