Toy
Libraries
Information Systems department who
provide a Computer Lab where 3rd year
students assist with tutoring. They are
guided by the Program co-
ordinator Debbie Cockrell.
The Toy Library purposes
to grow and scale this par-
ticular type of progam to a
STEAM centre where chil-
dren in this age group can
be skilled for the job market
of the future. Computer
Literacy is vital for survival
in the future generation of economically
active citizens. Play based learning
methods work hand in hand with critical
thinking and problem solving skills. Two
of our children in this program are now
doing Grade 10 CAT
subject at school, and
this 3rd year introduc-
tory course has really
helped them in prepara-
tion for secondary
school. A big thank you
to FWC who has as-
sisted with transport to
the UJ campus . Please
contact Debbie if you would like to find
out more about this program.
This year we started with a new group
of beginners in Computer Literacy and a
continuation of those who participated
over the past 2 years to the intermediate
phase.
This program aims to introduce children
aged 10-15 years to the basics of com-
puters including terminology, basic
Microsoft programmes , touch –typing
and general Life Skills through play
based learning.
The program is run in collaboration with
University of Johannesburg Applied
This quarter has seen the Toy Li-
brary enter into a CSR program
with staff of Wesbank Fairland in
their Customer Relations division.
Throughout the month of May, the
Toy Library hosted various team
members from their staff for some
play dates with local community
crèches. These provided great play
interaction for both adult volun-
teers, care-givers and most impor-
tantly the children aged 3-5 years
old. According to one of the staff
volunteers “ a day out of the office
is always welcome to play with
children from the local commu-
nity”.
The program driven by staff mem-
bers, also included the purchase
and installation of shelving from
the Garage Guys for the Toy Li-
brary.
We are so grateful for this very
necessary donation to the Centre
which has taken well over 2 years
to secure. A mammoth part of run-
ning a Toy Library is keeping or-
der with all the toys. Sufficient
shelf capacity is needed to keep
various developmental activities in
place. Thank you to Gillian and
Shadrack from the Wesbank team
as well as Karl from Garage Guys
for enabling this installation.
Together we continue to make a
difference in many ways to the
children in our local area.
Partnership and collaboration
through networking is a core value
at Slovo Centrre of Excellence.
This year we hosted a play date for
staff members from Econobee.
The aim was to see what we do as
an Organisation, how we do it and
why we do it. This done by partici-
pating with children in a fun way
and enjoyable experience for all.
This year , SCE has registered it’s
for Profit arm called Sensory Play
And Development Enterprises Pty
Ltd (SPADE), a Level 1 BBBEE
contributor. The aim as we transi-
tion towards sustainability is to
utilise this business for paying cli-
ents which will enable us to pro-
vide the services we offer to the
NPO beneficiaries.

In its 3rd year, this program has
great potential for developing
into a STEAM program—

team of coaches participate in our
Winter School Holiday Club dur-
ing July.
One of our desires as an Organisa-
tion is to use the platform created
to provide opportunities to other
like minded individuals and Or-
ganisations as they seek purpose to
impact those in under privileged
communities.
A young organisation, Bathupi
Chess Academy has recently regis-
tered as a NPO. They have ap-
proached us in 2 capacities, one as
a chess development program to
be hosted at the Toy Library, the
other to assist through coaching
and mentoring their team, in what
we do in this landscape of the
NPO sector.
We are excited to have had their
The Non Profit environment, often
referred to as the 3rd sector, lends
itself very well to internship
placement. The real life work en-
vironment is “human resource
hungry” as many hands are needed
for the various activities to be per-
formed on a daily basis at the
NPO.
At the Toy Library, this extends to
Admin skills, play facilitation and
general maintenance of the area
including cleaning of toys, garden-
ing and seeing to the grounds for
cleanliness. Maintaining toys in
the Library from inventory to re-
pair forms part of the tasks on a
daily basis.
We have 3 interns who have
started at the Centre during the
month of July. Tashrique comes to
us through Sparrows FET College.
He will be on a 6 month internship
as an Admin Assistant. Phumlile
and Tshepiso come through the
Living Link which specialises in
Work Readiness Programmes and
skills development.
Thank you to both Organisations
and the Interns for considering the
Slovo Centre of Excellence as a
partner during this critical period
of mentoring, coaching and gain-
ing work experience.
We train and develop all volun-
teers and interns as Play Facilita-
tors at the Toy Library amidst their
other duties and responsibilities.
They have played a major role in
getting toys cleaned, packing
shelves , general admin duties in-
cluding inventory data capturing
and sorting of puzzle pieces.
For all our interns, it was their first
time participating in a Mandela
Day such as the one hosted at the
Toy Library on 18 July. According
to Phumlile, “ Being a Play Facili-
tator for the 1st time was not too
hectic, and the children were so
excited to be with us at the Toy
Library. We learned a lot from
each other.”
We’ve had some wonderful new
hands join our team as volunteers
this month. Nico, comes all the
way from Germany. He is studying
Political Science and has a keen
interest in photography and socio-
economically challenged communi-
ties. He has added great value by
using his skills to assist in upgrad-
ing our website and social media
platforms .
Samantha and Mullison are both
involved with a keen interest in
Early Childhood Development.
They are receiving on the job
training in a play based learning
environment to further their skills
in working with children.
We are delighted to have them all
on board and look forward to their
continued development.
