WorkAround the world and close to home, we help clients tackle complex challenges. We are planning 200 square miles of greenway in the American heartland, redeveloping a former airport in Hong Kong and creating a delightful water feature for the San Jose Children’s Museum. Through this range of scales and a variety of contexts, our Work focuses on improving the environment, while making communities more livable and economically vital.

IdeasWe are planners, landscape architects and urban designers devoted to an innovative, collaborative practice focused on improving the quality of people’s lives. We take the time to listen to our clients, helping them to envision what each project can become. Our Ideas have an effect; they renew downtowns and urban neighborhoods; create beautiful parks and public spaces; and replace sprawl with more sustainable patterns of conservation and investment.

The following pages illustrate the effect of our collective Ideas + Work in enabling clients to create and connect places that endure...from the Region to the District, to the Neighborhood, Block and Building, and all of the Parks and Public Spaces woven in between.

“The River Ring is one of the most exciting and durable legacies we can create for our region. It is a true celebration of our unique and wonderful rivers, our cultural heritage.”David Fisher, Executive Director, The Great Rivers Greenway District

ince the mid-1990s, HOK has taken a leadership role in the emerging greenway movement in metropolitan

St. Louis. What started as a grassroots effort to build recreational trails throughout the region evolved into the Gateway Parks & Trails 2004 initiative: a proposal to establish a regional, bi-state park and recreation district. Voters in five Missouri and Illinois counties approved the initiative in 2000, creating The Great Rivers Greenway District and the Metro East Park and Recreation District.

We participated in the citizen-led visioning plan to define the Great Rivers Greenway District’s “River Ring.” This interconnected system

of greenways follows the region’s major rivers to create a contiguous loop around the three counties of the Great Rivers Greenway District.

Since this concept was established, we have been engaged in master planning many of St. Louis’ major River Ring components, including the Confluence, Missouri River and Chouteau Greenways. Implementation continues to proceed in strategic locations, transforming the vision of the region’s greenways into reality. These projects include the Riverwoods Conservation area and the Mississippi Riverfronts in St. Louis and East St. Louis.

n an effort to control future development of Kuwait’s most environmentally significant sites, the Kuwaiti government asked

HOK to lead a team of specialists in an environmental assessment and master plan for Boubyan Island. The two-year project led to an extensive environmental inventory and master plan identifying 90+ percent of the island as conservation area.

The remaining land is conducive to development and will host a variety of uses, including:

an international port to service the northern Gulf, positioned for low environmental impact and minimal dredging requirements;

a Free Trade and Light Industry zone to complement activities of the international port;

a signature residential community located over a series of excavated lakes and newly created islands to support a population of 70,000 people; and

spas, family entertainment and eco-styled complexes clustered on the sandy beaches of the southern coast.

Design controls and guidelines restrict development to ensure responsible land use and management.

LOcAtIOn: MOSS POINT, MISSISSIPPI

SIzE: 26 Sq MILES

“Moss Point has already decided they want to make the plans their own and figure out ways to make it happen.”Will Longwitz, Governor’s Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal

oon after Katrina made land fall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we were invited to help the city of Moss

Point chart a course for its post-hurricane future.

Through our work during and since the Mississippi Renewal Forum, which was sponsored jointly by the Governor’s Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal and the Congress for New Urbanism, we have helped city leaders find ways to capitalize on the city’s key assets, revitalize downtown, stabilize neighborhoods and attract sustainable forms of development and investment. Rebuilding and renewal plans include:

leveraging funding for the reconstruction or relocation of critical infrastructure;

supporting neighborhood stabilization and affordable infill housing;

channeling growth into new village centers and neighborhoods providing transitional housing for displaced residents; and

attracting investments in clean industry, green building, eco-tourism, and wetland/floodplain conservation.

hrough a highly interactive process involving charrettes, web-based communications and

public meetings, a community-based task force and consultant team developed a master plan for the Clarendon Metro station area.

The policies and strategies in the Plan build on concepts presented in previous county plans to concentrate a mix of uses around the Metro station with active ground-floor uses, quality open spaces, a balance of upper-story uses and lower levels of intensity and height closer to surrounding neighborhoods.

Prototypical designs for streetscape, traffic-calming and public space improvements, as well as demand management strategies for transportation and parking, were also generated. Working closely with local preservation and economic development constituencies, the team identified tools to encourage historic preservation and proposed viable strategies for small business retention and development.

n an ongoing collaboration with Swire Properties, we created this plan to redevelop Hong Kong’s former Kai Tak airport. The

property was vacated in 1997 with the start of operations at the new Chek Lap Kok International Airport, master planned by HOK.

The master plan celebrates the site’s heritage by converting the existing runway into an archipelago of human-scaled island neighborhoods. Channels will be cut to increase open space on the waterfront, improve water quality and aquatic recreational opportunities, and enhance views back to the central harbor.

A vast waterfront park carries the harbor side character of open vistas deep into the surrounding community. It extends real estate value and creates a catalyst for redevelopment of neighboring districts from industrial areas into new commercial centers.

At the end of the residential island chain—accessible by ferry, tram and cycling paths—is an aerospace museum commemorating Kai Tak’s aviation history and preserving public access to the tip of the runway. A 747 aircraft suspended in liftoff posture heralds Hong Kong’s continued progress into the future.

“…The region as a whole will enjoy the thriving new development activity that this project brings to the downtown core.”William DeWitt, Jr., Managing General Partner of the St. Louis Cardinals

he St. Louis Cardinals have a new home for the 2006 season and beyond. A collaborative effort with

HOK Sport + Venue + Event, the plan for the ballpark and associated “Ballpark Village” re-establishes the urban grid by capitalizing on light-rail linkages and themed mixed-use development.

The ballpark design celebrates the rich architectural heritage of St. Louis and famous ballparks of the past. Arched masonry windows and openings, along with generous use of brick, granite and glass, echo the early days of America’s great pastime.

An open northeasterly orientation offers most fans spectacular views of the city’s famous Gateway Arch.

Beyond left field, on the site of the old Busch Stadium, Ballpark Village will feature residential, office and retail development, activating the urban landscape 365 days a year. A new building for the Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum will be framed by themed restaurants and retail attractions, providing a festive game-day atmosphere every day. Some buildings overlooking the stadium may provide residents and visitors with dramatic rooftop viewing of games.

he Master Plan for Biogen Idec integrates the natural features of the site with the biotechnology

company’s desire to create an environment of inspiration and creativity. The planning team chose to create an arroyo, reminiscent of an original natural feature of the chaparral site, as an organizational device for the campus development.

Connected office buildings and labs flank either side of the central open space, taking advantage of the land by “stepping down” into the arroyo. Public entrances to the buildings are oriented toward external gardens and perimeter parking at the higher elevations, while employees access the arroyo at lower levels.

Native and Mediterranean plantings create a drought-tolerant landscape, requiring minimal irrigation, relating to the original chaparral plant community of the site.

The landscape character of the interior central open space is informal and relaxed. The entry gardens are more formal in character and include groves of olive and citrus trees.

orest Park is St. Louis’ largest park and home to many of the City’s premier public institutions. A dedicated sales

tax increase in the 1990s helped fund the “Forest Park Forever” initiative. With the restoration of the park a top priority, we were engaged to provide landscape architecture, fountain design and overall project management for the Emerson Grand Basin and Post-Dispatch Lake improvements.

The Emerson Grand Basin project recalls the World’s Fair Grand Basin and the 1916 Cass Gilbert inspired design. The basin walls were reconstructed with boat landings, balconies and overlooks. Tree-lined pedestrian promenades frame Art Hill and the Art Museum.

Dramatic lighted fountains and decorative lighting and landscaping also add to the ambience.

Post-Dispatch Lake was dredged and expanded with two new islands, one for picnics and one for wildlife. The path system links landscape areas, islands, picnic areas and special events, while improving passive recreation. Natural stone outcroppings enhance the cascading character at the spillways, where lake volume is used for storm water retention.
