Why did you rate PPFA how you did in the previous question? Shaded=BYU studentNegative responses Middle responses Positive responses“something dishonest about the concept of having to go there—sneaking around to get services”

They provide help to a lot of needy women but don’t agree with all help they provide-- abortions.

Helps people stay healthy and avoid unwanted pregnancies

“I feel very strongly about the pro-life movement and can’t imagine ever supporting Planned Parenthood”

Do not agree with abortions, but not my place to tell a woman what she can/can’t do

Provides education and services not available anywhere else. Progressive in it’s vision, modern minded. Saves lives.

“They enable a lot of choices that don’t dissuade girls from waiting to have sex and enable abortions that should never happen

I think it’s important that teens have access to information…. But I oppose abortion

They help those in need and help educate communities about health issues

Distribute condoms to kids, provide abortions, etc.

They have good intentions but it would be better if discouraged extramarital sex and abortions

They are willing to educate anyone about sex and the consequences, and willing to provide birth control options for everyone

There is stigma, not enough PPs and don’t financially help enough

Perform abortions for women who need them

Keeping people safe as they participate in sexual actions

“they may provide information and even some useful health services…. But can’t outweigh the tens of thousands of babies whose lives are cut short before they have even begun.

Uncomfortable and strange but took care of what I needed

Providing reproductive healthcare to those who cannot afford private practice are. Safe, reputable, medical-unjudgemental establishment for women of all ages who do not feel comfortable going anywhere else.

Personally humiliating experience with a clinic

Neutral to lack of knowledge—7-8 Affordable, nonjudgmental easier access to healthcare

Page 6: Planned Parenthood Image Survey

Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities ThreatsNational and International Recognition

Declining economy--PPFA laid off 30 workers recently due to the economy

Continue to provide services for underserved populations, those without insurance

Donors— The Picower Foundation, who gave $484,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2006 closed down because it’s assets were managed by Bernie Madof

Legislative awareness, advocacy, and success. Success in Planned Parenthood v. Gonzales

Public image—many individuals are unaware of any of PPFAs activities other than birth control or abortion. This image makes PPFA extremely polarizing and controversial

Partnerships with other organizations

Shareholders of donors petitioning or creating a resolution for cessation of support. Shareholder resolutions have caused PPFA to lose many major donors and as much as 40$million in the past 10 years. Major donors who stopped supporting PPFA due to shareholder pressure include: AT&T, General Mills, Target, AMEX

Already established program and existing, stable, resources

Funding sources; easily pressured, need many donors.

Creative new solutions for poor economy

Abortion activists have taken extreme measures, including boycotts, lobbying, and acts of violence to cease PPFAs activities.

Strong community partnerships with individuals, corporations, and other non-profits

Lack of access to a Planned Parenthood location because of transportation, location

Re-evaluate image to try to take focus off of abortion.

Unusually polarizing politically and personally

Good leadership, strong commitment by staff and affiliates

Lack of partnership with men in men’s health, education, and supporting women’s health.

Government contracts and support; provides support to women who have no other resources

Legal—PPFA is constantly the target of lawsuits, several which have made it up through the supreme court.

Insurance companies and financial subsidization for services established and functioning.

Lack of awareness about what PP does and what services they offer

Obama administration partnership to re-think school sex education

Changing tactics for international effectiveness

Demand for services Relations with religious groups Public education

Free of debt, diverse funding sources

International outreach and programs
