been a good learning experi-ence for me,” council member Danny Carrier said.

The Board of Edu-cation, teachers, volunteer firefighters and other volun-teer members of the commu-nity are great. The two years have flown by. Many times through-out the year, but especially around the holidays, librari-ans are often asked for rec-ommendations of books that would make great gifts for children.

There are so many books on the market that it can be overwhelming to discover a book that will be treasured simply based on online re-

views or what seems to be trending.

The best way to choose a gift book that will fit the re-cipient in mind would be to examine a selection of qual-ity books in person, and that’s just what visitors will able to do at the Plainville Public Library’s “Gift Book Browse” which will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m.

The children’s librarians

have been hard at work col-lecting books, both new and classic, and organizing them by various categories so that visitors can view them and find the perfect book for the children and young adults in their lives.

School NewsArtificial turf, track update at high schoolThe project to install two

synthetic turf fields at Plain-ville High School continues moving along as planned, ac-cording to Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jeffrey Kitching. The project is being over-seen by the Community Turf Committee, a large represen-tative group of Plainville res-idents, school administration and town staff members. The committee meets regularly each month to discuss the project status and make final decisions.

By the end of October, the preparation work on the high school’s stadium field will be complete and it is anticipated that the company provid-ing the actual synthetic turf, SPRINTURF, will begin the installation process. The con-struction firm hired to com-plete the preparation work, LaRosa Earth Works, has kept the project on track and on time thus far. LaRosa has re-cently begun excavating and preparing the softball/prac-tice field. The timeline for

the synthetic turf installation calls for the stadium field to be ready for use by mid-No-vember and the softball/prac-tice field in early December. If plans continue to proceed as expected, the school ad-ministration hopes to be able to play this year’s Thanksgiv-ing Day football game on the new field.

The project recently faced a slight weather related issue with regard to the resurfacing of the running track around the field, which is also part

of the overall project. Due to the nature of the material that will cover the track, very specific weather conditions are needed for an extended period of time to allow for

Colts ready for postseasonJunior Midget

Plainville 22, New Milford 18: The Colts improved their reg-ular season record to 8-0 with the win.

Plainville won behind two touchdowns from Peter Diaz and another score from Christian Collin.

The Colts stopped the Bulls’ fi-nal drive with one minute left in the game on an interception by Collin.

Plainville will host a playoff game this Sunday, Nov. 1 at Norton Park against New Fairfield.

Junior PeeweeNew Milford 21, Plainville

20: The Colts fell short in a close contest.

The blocking by the Colts’ of-fensive line helped produce a season-high in points while the defense had several nice stops on the afternoon.

Hard hitting from Jacob Bur-goina made running up the mid-dle of the field difficult for New Milford all day.

Despite falling short, the game proved to be the team’s single best effort this season.

Plainville is scheduled to play New Milford again on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Tiny MitesPlainville 18, New Milford

6: The Colts played their best game of the year and came out on top.

The contest proved to be the team’s biggest challenge to date, with players on both sides of the ball performing very well, help-ing Plainville to finish off the sea-son with a great team effort and a “W.”

Gridiron gang back at .500 after beating Fermi 40-0

FootballThe Blue Devils moved

back to .500 on the season with a 40-0 thrashing of Fermi Friday, Oct. 23 at Nor-ton Park.

Jon Lindgren accounted for three scores with his own two feet, as well as one with his arm. Mikal Salmon also scored twice for the Blue Devils.

Lindgren helped the Devils get started on the right foot with a 65-yard dash to the end zone to help give Plainville an early 7-0 lead. Lindgren later found wideout Jon Olson through the air for a 56-yard score that put the Blue Devils ahead 13-0 after one quarter.

Salmon scored his first points of the day with a five-yard scamper in the sec-ond quarter to put Plainville ahead 20-0.

The Blue Devils doubled their score in the second half with two touchdown runs from Lindgren, from one and seven yards out, and a 40-yard score from Salmon.

Lindgren finished the day with 225 rushing yards as Salmon wrapped up his per-formance with 66 yards on only four carries. Ryan Gor-ham was 4-for-6 on extra point tries.

Plainville will look to

win its fourth game of the year, against Berlin (5-1), in the team’s second consecu-tive home game, this time at Southington High School.

Girls volleyballThe Lady Blue Devils qual-

ified for the Class M state tournament with a thrilling five-set victory over Bristol Central, 25-23, 18-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13.

The postseason-clinching win came on the heels of a 3-1 decision over New Britain earlier in the week. The local girls came back from a 1-0 set deficit to take that match, 10-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-15.

The return to the playoffs ends a three-year drought for the Lady Blue Devils, who last made the postseason in 2011 when the team finished 9-10 in the regular season.

At press time, Plainville (8-7) had three more matches to try and improve its postsea-son standing. The team will celebrate its Senior Night Fri-day, Oct. 30. The match be-gins at 6 p.m.

Boys soccerPlainville finds itself back

in familiar territory, as a 2-0 week helped propel the boys to another postseason appearance.

The Blue Devils (9-5) used wins over New Britain and Bristol Central to finish the week perfect, outscoring

their foes 9-5 in the process.Plainville bested the Hurri-

canes 5-4 in their first contest of the week. Five Blue Devils – Adnan Sadiku, Alex Autunno, Matt Bialko, Mike Torres and Patryk Wnorowski – scored for the away team, as goal-keeper Sergio Zaldivar made 11 saves to withstand a vicious New Britain onslaught.

The PHS boys made much easier work of the Lancers in a 4-1 contest that can only improve their ranking for the Class M state tournament. Wnorowski and Torres again scored, as teammates Juan Torres and Dane Stephens joined in on the fun. Zaldivar

recorded two saves.Plainville currently stands

13th in the unofficial Class M rankings. Tournament pair-ings will be announced during the first week of November.

Girls soccerDespite a slow start to the

2015 campaign, the Blue Dev-ils seem determined to fin-ish the season strong. They made good on that focus with a 1-0-1 week to improve to 3-9-2 on the year. Plainville began its week with a score-less tie against New Britain, the team’s second tie in a row.

The local girls finished their week with a strong 2-0 victory over the Lancers of Bristol Central. Lexxy Lo-pez scored both goals for the Blue Devils as goaltender Julianna Christy made an in-credible 18 saves to preserve the shutout.

After a difficult middle of the season that saw the PHS girls lose seven straight con-tests, Plainville went 2-1-2 in the past two weeks of play. Also, the Blue Devils have held their opponents score-less in four straight contests.

Boys cross countryThe Blue Devils competed

in the CCC Championship at Wickham Park on Wednes-day, Oct. 21, finishing 22nd out of 30 competing teams with 660 points.

Plainville was led by Ja-

rod Romankiw, who came in 69th out of 207 compet-ing runners and finished with a time of 18:35.3. Bert Goldsnider and Connor McNamara were the Blue Devils’ next best finishers, crossing the line 138th and 144th overall with times of 20:12.9 and 20:21.8, respec-tively. Luke San Juan (154th overall; 20:46.1) and Cole McNamara (155th; 20:50.1) were Plainville’s other scor-ing finishers.

Jared Demmons (20:56.7) and Greg Sileo (21:05.3) also competed for the Blue Devils.

Girls cross countryThe Lady Blue Devils took

part in the CCC Champi-onship on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Wickham Park. Led by Somer Abdelsame and Mad-die Ware, the team finished 23rd overall.

Abdelsame finished 95th out of 174 runners with a time of 23:49.4 while Ware crossed the finish line in 24:25.3 (114th overall).

Plainville’s other scorers were Kristina Petit (117th overall; 24:31.4), Amy Muller (134; 26:02.6) and Elizabeth Tata (139; 26:24.5). Olivia Cretella also competed for the Blue Devils, finishing the race in 28:36.4.

Plainville finished second in the South-White Division to Berlin, with a team total of 61 points.

the application of the cov-ering. The Turf Committee recently discussed this is-sue and has made the deci-sion to hold that portion of the project until next spring, when weather conditions will be better suited to the track resurfacing.

“Our primary concern is the quality of the final prod-uct,” said Kitching. “The Turf Committee continues to lead the turf project successfully, and we are pleased with the progress to date. While it is unfortunate that the track re-surfacing portion of the proj-ect will be delayed, it is more important to be certain the installation goes well and the track lasts, than rushing to finish this fall.”
