MESSENGER Plainville United Methodist Church Rev. Russell G. Waldmann, Pastor Volume 19, no. 1 February/March 2015 Email: [email protected]Website: www.plainvilleumc.org from the Pastor… Greetings, blessings, and warmest New Year wishes be to you all. We were very blessed to gather with most members of our family at Christmas and at the start of the New Year. Several of us went out to dinner the day after New Year’s Day. We went to one of those chain restaurants, the one where the lobsters hunker down and retreat to the far corners of their tank, eyeing each spectator with great suspicion and wariness. If we were lobsters, I dare think that we would cower in much the same way! They have nothing to fear from me...but try telling that to a lobster! From what I hear, they have difficulty making those determinations! There were nine of us in our group. A most professional waitress took our beverage and dinner orders, tended well to our needs and wants, and was obviously one who had been doing her job for a while as she was doing it extremely well. At the end of our time there, and it must be said that two in our group were responsible for the justified fear and trepidation of those lobsters!, she thanked us for coming. And I thanked her for helping to make our time at the restaurant a very happy one...and then wished her a Happy New Year. And she looked at me with some amazement and surprise...that a customer had, in her eyes, I guess, simply been that friendly...and returned the New Year’s wish. She wasn’t expecting to hear what I said...but why not? It surely was ‘no big deal.’ At least I didn’t think that it was. And I got to thinking how wonderful it would be if all people, throughout this New Year, would just extend surprising and unsuspecting kindness and thoughtfulness, in uncomplicated and genuine ways, and know that the effect upon others can be huge. What if we worshipped God all the time rather than rarely...how would God respond to that? How would that make God feel? What if we helped others a little bit more, people who we don’t know and who don’t know us, but who need the helping hand... how might this impact their lives? What if we intentionally try to regularly do the uncommon and ‘make someone else’s day’...how might that show the God alive in us? What if we live all the time to make things better than the way we now find them, to lift another’s spirit, to increase another’s joy, to ease another’s load...how might these brighten the day and bring people together? And not only can the effect of all this upon others be huge...it can be huge upon us as well! So Happy New Year to you all...and may we all help to make the year one of blessing and peace out of the depth of our love for and faith in the God of our lives. Pastor Waldmann.

MESSENGER Plainville United Methodist Church
Rev. Russell G. Waldmann, Pastor Volume 19, no. 1 February/March 2015
WE PRAY GOD’S COMFORT AND PEACE BLESS THE FAMILY OF:
DAVID WOOD, nephew of Helen Barnes
and cousin of Tracey Michaud, on 12/9/14.
May God’s love bless and keep you.
Six years ago, in 2008, the Plainville Food
Pantry distributed about 68,000 pounds
of food to help those in need.
In 2013, the amount of food given by the
Pantry was 127,500 pounds.
That’s an 87% increase.
When each person worshipping in
Plainville every Sunday brings TWO
POUNDS of NON-PERISHABLE FOOD
ITEMS to help to meet this need, we
worshippers will be going a long way to
helping the Pantry help those in need.
You and I have this power and influence!
“I was hungry, and you gave me
something to eat.”
LET’S DO IT IN GOD’S NAME!

To Our Church Family,
Thank you so very much for the many
Christmas card greetings, for the
Church gift to us, for the other gifts that
were so generously given to us, and for
the 50th Anniversary photo album
presented to us at the worship of Jan. 4.
We are deeply thankful to you all for
this warmth and kindness. We are
grateful to have spent ten Christmases
with you, and pray that the New Year
will be one full of God’s blessings and
peace, that all of us may continue to be
faithful disciples for Jesus Christ.
Thank you very much again; we are
truly filled with appreciation.
~ Pastor and Karen Waldmann.
FOUR LARGE GROCERY SHOPPING BAGS WERE
NEEDED TO BRING ALL OF THE ‘WHITE GIFTS FOR THE KING’ TO THE PLAINVILLE
FOOD PANTRY. THESE WERE RECEIVED AT THE
CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR
THIS OVERFLOWING OF LOVE AND KINDNESS.
The ANNIVERSARY COOKBOOKS
have been a great success, well-received
and appreciated. Recipes tried have been
met with rave reviews. The Cookbook is
a ‘class act,’ professionally conceived and
prepared.
There are some, but not too many!, that
remain waiting for good homes. These
make wonderful additions to anyone’s
culinary library. They also make terrific
gifts. One was presented to our District
Superintendent and his family at the time
of the 50TH Anniversary on Red Stone
Hill worship last November the 9TH.
Cookbooks are $10.oo each.
Please contact Ellen Cedarfield or Karen
Waldmann to obtain a copy or two.
Thanks very much.
Please remember to give the picture
sides ONLY (reverse side free of
writing) of your Christmas cards to
Pastor Waldmann, to pass along to
David Larkin, who makes Gift Tags
from them.
Please also remember to give your
cancelled postage stamps to John
Delin. The Sons of Norway use the
stamps to generate funds for
children’s medical research.
Thanks for helping these folks out in
these simple and easy ways.
