WALKERTON AREA SHOPPER November 4, 2013 3Plan for Long-term Care
Costs November is Long-term Care Awareness Month. And when it comes
to long-term care — such as a stay in a nursing home or the
services provided by a home health aide — you’ll want to plan for
the potential costs involved.Of course, you might think that you’ll
always be able to live independently, without requiring any
assis-tance — and perhaps you will. However, the odds aren’t
necessarily in your favor: About 70% of Americans who reach the age
of 65 will need some form of long-term care in their lives for an
average of three years, according to estimates from the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services.
And every type of long-term care is expensive. Consider these
numbers, taken from the 2013 Cost of Care Survey produced by
Genworth, a fi nancial security company: •The national average rate
for a private room in a nursing home is $83,950 — a jump of 24%
over the past fi ve years. And it’s not much cheaper for a
semi-private room in a nursing home — the average cost is $75,405
per year, up 23% from fi ve years ago.•A full-time home health aide
costs, on average, $44,479 per year.
If you had to spend more than $80,000 per year for a nursing
home, and you needed to stay in that nursing home for several
years, what would it do to your savings? How would it affect all
your fi nancial goals?
Many people think Medicare will pay for long-term care expenses,
but that’s just not the case. In real-ity, Medicare only covers a
small percentage of long-term care costs, which means it’s
typically up to the individual to foot the bills.
You’ve worked hard to position yourself for an enjoyable
retirement, so it’s important to protect your in-come and assets
from potentially huge long-term care costs. How can you deal with
these expenses?
Essentially, you have a couple of options. First, you could
“self-insure” by incorporating long-term costs into your future
budget — but, as the above numbers indicate, that could be pretty
expensive. Your second choice is to “transfer the risk” of
incurring long-term care costs to an insurance company. A fi
nancial profes-sional can assist you in choosing the right solution
for your individual needs.
However, as important as it is to address costs, and ways of
meeting them, it’s also necessary to look at some of the other
factors that may be connected with the need for long-term care
services. To illustrate: If you were to enter a nursing home, you
might be suffering from a physical or mental disability that could
keep you from handling your own affairs. So you may want to consult
with your legal advisor to discuss a durable power of attorney,
which would allow you to delegate your fi nancial decisions to a
relative, close friend or anyone else you might choose.
Preparing for the unexpected, including long-term care, takes
time and careful planning. So why not observe Long-term Care
Awareness Month by getting started on your plans? It can be time
well spent. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your
local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Bob Borlik.

Will You Be Able to Retire When You Want? Despite the soaring
stock market of the past few years, some Americans are nervous
about their ability to retire comfortably — or even retire at all.
Consider these somewhat sobering statistics:•Almost half of
American workers report being “not too confident” or “not at all
confident” about being able to afford a comfortable retirement,
according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s 2013
Retirement Confidence Survey. The 28 percent who say they are “not
at all” confident is the highest level recorded in the 23 years of
this survey.•Between 2010 and 2012, the percentage of people 45 to
60 who planned to delay retirement rose to 62 percent from 42
percent, according to the Conference Board, a non-profit business
membership and research organization. If you’re in either of these
groups — that is, if you’re concerned about having enough resources
to enjoy your re-tirement years or you’re afraid that you’ll have
to work longer than you anticipated — what can you do to possibly
alleviate your worries? Your first step is to get specific about
your retirement goals. Have you set a target date for your
retirement yet? If so, how many years until you reach this
date?Once you know when you want to retire, you’ll need to come up
with some sort of “price tag” for your retirement years. By taking
into account your hoped-for lifestyle and your projected longevity,
you should be able to develop a reasonably good estimate of how
much money you’ll need as a retiree. You may find it helpful to
work with a financial professional — someone with the tools and
experience to plug in all the variables needed to calculate your
retirement expenses.Next, review your retirement savings vehicles,
such as your 401(k) and IRA. Are you contributing as much as you
can afford to these accounts? Are you increasing your contributions
when your salary rises? Within these vehicles, are you choosing an
investment mix that can offer the growth you’ll need to accumulate
a sufficient level of retire-ment savings?Even after you’ve “maxed
out” on your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement
plan, you can find other tax-advantaged vehicles in which to invest
for retirement. Again, your financial advisor can help you evaluate
the ones that may be suitable for your needs.Still, even after
maximizing your investments, you may come up short of what you’ll
need, given your desired retirement date. Consequently, you may
need to consider working a couple of extra years. If you like your
career, you may find that moving out your retirement date isn’t so
bad — you’ll bring in more earned income and you may be able to
delay taking Social Security, which would eventually result in
bigger monthly checks. Plus, you could postpone your withdrawals
from your 401(k) and IRA, giving these accounts more time in which
to potentially grow. (Keep in mind, though, that once you turn
70-1/2, you’ll have to start taking money from your 401(k) and your
traditional IRA.)In any case, do what you can to retire when you
want — but be flexible enough in your thinking so that you won’t be
shocked or dismayed if you need to slightly extend your working
years. By “covering your bases” in this way, you can be ready for
whatever comes your way. -This article was written by Edward Jones

farwell to Dr. Meyer Saturday, October 26th was a tremendous turn
out for the Meyer Veterinary Animal Hospital’s Hog Roast & Open
House! Over 400 local families joined in the festivities to bid
farewell to Dr. Bill Meyer and to welcome Dr. Erin Sako and Dr.
Jeff Weitzel. Dr. Meyer built Meyer Veterinary Hospital in 1997,
and has served the community of Walkerton and surrounding areas for
all of their pet’s veterinary needs. Dr. Meyer sold the practice to
Dr. Jeff Weitzel and partner Jamie I. Ellis, Hospital Administrator
this month. The new owner’s and doctor are excited to continue the
legacy of Dr. Meyer and build lasting re-
lationships with it’s clients. Dr. Meyer’s staff are still
onboard and are eager to continue to care for their patients and
clients. Clients enjoyed the musical entertainment of “Flat
Baroque” of LaPorte and raffl es of pet pumpkins and pet baskets
and winter mums were drawn. The event was catered by Jaworski’s
Market. Children in attendance spent their energies in the fun
bounce house. Meyer Veterinary Hospital would like to thank all of
those in attendance in helping to make that day very special and
memorable. Meyer Veterinary Hospital will continue to provide care
