Brecht Pacific Inc. • October 2011 • 1-800-225-MENU Elisha Thomas and his family were the first documented settlers in the area of Alvin. They arrived in the area in 1845 and settled near Mustang Slough. The Santa Fe Railroad shipped cattle from the Gulf Coast to the markets in the East during in the 1860s. One of the stops the railroad made was in the area of Alvin. In 1872, the railroad hired Alvin Morgan to oversee activities at the stock pens. Morgan watched over the cattle holding and loading pens and a large water storage tank situated next to the railroad. Major George W. Durant, another settler in Alvin, acknowledged the significance the railroad held in the growth of Alvin. Major Durant was successful in getting the railroad to make the area of Alvin a regular stop on the line. With the railroad and cattle in the area, many cattlemen came to purchase the prairie land. Alvin continued to grow, and in 1893, was finally incorporated as the City of Alvin. The cattle industry was not the only reason the City of Alvin was able to sustain its growth. The agricultural industry began to flourish in the early 1900s. Over time, Alvin became one of the leading producers of strawberries. Figs, oranges, pears and the Cape jasmine flower were also grown in Alvin. The City of Alvin continued throughout the years to prosper, and in the early 1930s, rice became a major agricultural commodity, and oil was discovered in the area.
