Just like any athlete, musician, or performer - practice makes perfect. For Pius X students on the Academic Decathlon team, the practice, combined with hundreds of hours of reading and study, has paid off in a big way. On Saturday, February 20, they achieved a tremendous feat and claimed their third straight State title. The win also earned Pius X an all-expense paid trip to com-pete at the National Academic Decathlon in Anchorage, Alaska, April 28-30.
Senior Liam Kruse led the Thunderbolts as the highest scoring student in the entire competition, as he broke the record for the highest ever individual score earned at a Nebraska State Aca-demic Decathlon. Kruse, along with teammates Lisa Vu and Catherine Krueger, also earned perfect scores in the math com-petition. Henry Jaros claimed the high score in the Scholastic division. In all, the nine team members earned the gold medal in the Super Quiz competition and 45 individual medals: 20 gold, 16 silver, and 9 bronze. Each of the nine members of Pius X’s first place team also will receive a college scholarship.
Pius X took the top spot in the large school division, outscoring Omaha Central, Omaha Burke, Bellevue East, Omaha Gross, Gretna, and Seward High Schools. Elkhorn Mount Michael took first place in the small school division with Lourdes Central tak-ing first place in the very small school division.
In all, 155 students from 14 Nebraska schools competed in the state contest. The Academic Decathlon competition includes students from different academic levels, based on GPA, compet-ing in 10 different areas all based on a single topic or subject. This year’s Aca Deca topic centered on the country of India with students taking exams, writing essays, and giving speeches. The culminating event is a super quiz bowl competition.

Pius X Encourages Students to Begin their Day with Breakfast - submitted by Deb Hoge -
Pius X students, faculty, and staff were encouraged to celebrate Na-tional School Breakfast Week at the BOLT Cafe. The cafeteria staff offered a great selection of hot and cold breakfast items, and as a special bonus, everyone that ate breakfast was eligible for a drawing for a Marcus Theatres gift card.
Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for families to find time for a healthy breakfast. How-ever, U.S. Department of Agricul-ture data shows that more students are starting their day with a nutri-tious breakfast in their school cafeterias. To encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available with school breakfast, Pius X recog-nized National School Breakfast Week March 7-11.
The National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) campaign theme, “Wake Up to School Breakfast”, reminded the entire school com-munity that school breakfast pro-vides a healthy, energizing start to the day for students. Students were encouraged to “Wake Up” their minds and bodies March 7-11 with special breakfast menus.
“A healthy breakfast at the start of the day is one way to ensure stu-dents are getting the best educa-tion they can,” said Tini Van-
Oehlertz, R.D. “National School Breakfast Week helps us edu-cate parents and students about all the healthy and appealing choices we offer.” School nutrition professionals at Pius X pre-pare breakfast and lunches every day that meet federal nutrition standards – limiting fat, calories, and sodium – and encourage students to choose from the fruits, vegetables, and whole grains offered with school meals.
National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program to all children and to promote the link between eating a good breakfast, academic achievement, and healthy lifestyles. The “Wake Up to School Breakfast” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association and Kellogg’s Spe-cialty Channels. Parents and students can follow the fun on Fa-cebook.com/TrayTalk. For more information about schools meals, visit www.schoolnutrition.org/SchoolMeals.

Pius X Alumnus Selected to Lead Thunderbolt Football Program - submitted by Deb Hoge -
Athletic Director Tim Aylward announced that Assistant Coach Ryan Kearney will replace him as the Head Football Coach of the Pius X Thunderbolts in Lincoln. Kearney will be only the third football coach in the school’s history, following the footsteps of Aylward and his predecessor, Coach Vince Aldrich.
“I am honored and humbled to be given this opportunity by God to serve Pius X High School as the new Head Football Coach,” noted Kearney. “I am excited to continue the outstanding tradi-tion, which was established by Vince Aldrich and continued by Tim Aylward, of helping young men use the sport of football to grow within the core values of Pius X High School.”
A 1998 Pius X alumnus, Kearney played for Coach Aylward ’69 during the 1990’s and was a member of the Thunderbolts’ 1997 state championship team. He has also served as an assistant to Aylward since 2004, starting as an Assistant Position Coach before moving to coaching linebackers and tight ends. Kearney was named Defensive Coordinator in 2006.
Aylward retired at the end of the 2015 season after 31 years, posted a 208 win and 133 loss record, and claimed four state championships. “Ryan is a good person to lead the Pius X foot-ball program. He’s been in the program for the past 12 years, is very organized, and is a very good coach. He will do an out-standing job.”
Kearney began his teaching and coaching career at Pius X in 2004. He taught Biology and Chemistry before eventually mov-ing to a full-time position as a Health and P.E. instructor. Today, he also serves as the Physical Education Department Chair. “I would like to thank Tim Aylward for his service and for the role model he has been for me and countless young men who played for and coached with him. I will forever be indebted to him,” Kearney said. “When he offered me the job, Tim gave me this piece of advice: ‘Be yourself’.” That put me at ease. I am not expected to be him. I, my coaching staff, and our student athletes just need to strive to be the best versions of ourselves each day.”
Pius X Alumna to Lead Softball Program - submitted by Deb Hoge -
Athletic Director Tim Aylward ’69 announced that Christy (Kobza) Kruger ’05 will be the new head soft-ball coach at Pius X High School. Kruger replaces Coach Don Rempe who stepped down last fall after 5 years at the Thun-derbolt helm.
“We had a strong group of candidates for the position,” noted Aylward when he introduced the assistant coach and Pius X alumna to the Thunderbolt soft-ball team. “Coach Kruger was our top choice and I am excited to have her lead our softball program.”
Kruger served as a Thunderbolt assistant coach under Rempe and coaches a select softball team for the Nebraska Blue Dia-monds.
As a former Thunderbolt softball player and captain, Kruger was a 4-year letter winner and earned All-State and All-City honors. She was a part of the 2002 State Championship Softball Team and along with her 2003 and 2004 team-mates holds four hitting records. She also holds the catching records for num-ber of runners caught stealing (17) and throw-out percentage (66%). Her post high school softball career continued as a 4-year letterman at Doane College (2007-2011) where she was named GPAC Player of the Week, a NAIA Scholar Athlete, and NAIA All-Conference.
“It is an honor to have been chosen as the next head softball coach for Pius X,” Coach Kruger commented. “I am very excit-ed for what the future holds for the program and this great group of girls.”
2005 Pius X alumna Christy (Kobza) Kruger has been selected as the new Pius X Thunderbolt softball coach.

Girls Basketball Team - submitted by P.J. Book -
An outstanding season came to a close for our girls basketball team in the A-6 District Championship game which concluded a 14-9 season. After defeating Omaha Burke in the opening round of post season, the Thunderbolts nearly made a return trip to the state tournament but dropped a two point game to Papillion- La Vista South. We are proud of our student-athletes who invested in another terrific season of basketball excellence at Pius X.
Boys Basketball Team - submitted by P.J. Book -
We celebrate another successful season by our boy's basketball team and give thanks for all of the growth and development of our student-athletes who invested their talents and gifts into the season. After an exciting 1st round overtime victory against Omaha North, the Thunderbolts fell one game short of being the 2nd Pius X team to ever advance to the Class A State Tourna-ment, losing to Creighton Prep in the district finals. Our Bolts finished with a 15-8 record and plenty of momentum towards the future.

- submitted by Michelle Birkel -
The on-line application is now available for Pius X students/parents to apply for tuition assis-tance/scholarships for the 2016-2017 school year. Tuition assis-
tance will be awarded in June and recipients notified prior to the start of school in August. The application can be accessed through the Pius X website at www.piusx.net [Development/Support - Scholarships - Click here to apply for tuition assistance/scholarships]. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 30. The application is available in both English and Spanish. Parents or students who need assistance due to language barriers or computer access are encouraged to contact the Guidance De-partment at (402) 488-0931 or the Pius X Foundation at (402) 488-1046. We are here to help. There is a $30 application fee when submitting the online appli-cation. Each family is asked to pay half of this cost or $15, which can be paid by credit or debit card. Pius X will cover the remaining $15 fee. The majority of the scholarships are based on financial need. Parent(s) or guardian(s) wanting to be considered for tuition assistance based on financial need must complete the FACTS Grant & Aid assessment section of the online application. They will need their 2015 Income Tax Return to complete the applica-tion. All information provided is kept confidential. Upon com-pletion, parents/guardians will mail or fax the supporting docu-mentation to FACTS. The tax information needed to verify the application will be shown in the FGAA Checklist that is found online. If someone is only applying for nonfinancial need schol-arships, this portion of the application does not need to be filled out. Note: Award decisions are not made by FACTS, but by the Pius X Scholarship Selection Committee in June 2016. Thank you.
Thanks to the generosity of many do-nors, Pius X will award more than $62,000 in scholarships to students for the 2015-2016 school year. Establishing a Named Scholarship gives you the opportunity to honor and remember
loved ones while actively supporting Pius X’s quality, Catholic education. Once a Named Scholarship is created, the funds are invested in the Foundation’s endowment with the income from the investment being used to help pay a portion of students’ tui-tion. Named scholarships last forever and serve as a permanent memorial. This means you can financially assist current as well as future students for many years to come. As the scholarship balance increases, so does the amount of aid students receive.
You may donate to any established named scholarship or the Pius X Foundation's general scholarship fund by clicking on the Donate Now button or by mailing a check to Pius X. For more information or to establish a named scholarship, please contact Michelle Birkel or call 402-488-1046.

Chicken BASICS Before you dive into your favorite chicken recipes, review a few basics about managing your bird and tips to ensure food safety.
STORING CHICKEN
Store raw poultry in its original package in the coldest part of the refrigerator.
Cook poultry pieces within two days of purchase. For larger storage, freeze poultry in its original package for up
to 2 months. To freeze larger poultry, wrap original package with foil.
Whole poultry will keep for up to 1 year; cut-up pieces will keep for up to 9 months. Never freeze stuffed poultry.
HANDLING CHICKEN
Set aside a cutting board to use exclusively for raw chicken and other meats that will be cooked.
Wash work surfaces and utensils in hot, soapy water before and after handling chicken to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Never partially cook chicken, refrigerate, and finish later – bacteria may grow.
Discard used marinade. Serve cooked chicken immediately and refrigerate leftovers
within two hours. Rinsing chicken is not necessary. However, you should rinse
cavities of whole birds that will be stuffed. Pat dry with paper towels.
THAWING CHICKEN
Never thaw chicken at room temperature. Thaw in the refriger-ator and in a dish to catch any drips.
Allow at least nine hours for parts and 24 hours for every 3.5 to 4 pounds for whole birds.
For fast thawing, you can microwave poultry on the defrost setting; but be sure to cook immediately.
If a whole bird doesn’t fit in the microwave, place it in a re-sealable plastic bag in a sink of cold water. Allow 30 minutes per pound, changing water every 30 minutes.
