Reading Recommendations from Jim Sawyer

M. James Sawyer describes some of his favorite readings. Jim has been a part of graduate education at PIU for more than ten years. He stops by campus fiord a month almost every semes-ter. He and his wife, Kay, recently moved across the U.S. from California to Maine.

One of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis an Oxford and Cam-bridge University professor, Lewis spent his early life as a brilliant atheist scholar. But in his early 30’s was converted to Christianity.

He wrote at least 22 volume addressing Christian themes. His Mere Christianity originated as a BBC radio series during WWII—it was this series that put him into the public light. He wrote on The-

ology, apologetics, ethics as well as the seven volumes of the Chron-icles of Narnia a series of children’s stories that appeal even to adults. Two of his other well loved books are:

The Screwtape Letters a series of letters between a young demon, Wormwood, and his uncle Screwtape, giving advice of the best ways for Wormwood to be successful in assuring that his “client” makes it safely to Hell and does not fall prey to the message of the gospel. This

book is an easy to read classic. The Great Divorce: no it is not about marriage! This tale of a bus trip from the residents of

Hell to the outskirts of heaven where the passengers meet friends and family members who try to convince the residents of Hell to give up their hostility toward God and come

into his glorious presence. Again enjoyable, easy to read and thoroughly thought provoking. Another good and accessible author is my friend Baxter Kruger a theologian who has taken a plunge in

fiction and penned: Patmos: What if one morning when you went to the front door of your house were you were unex-plainably transported from your home and found yourself in utter darkness, eventually discover-

ing that you were in a dark cave on the on the island of Patmos. This is the experience of Aiden a burned- out pastor who in this dark cave meets the elderly apostle John. Through love and dreams and astonishing discussions the wise apostle reveals the lie of all lies―separation from

God―preparing Aidan for a life-changing discovery. Aidan has a vision of heaven and beholds the Lamb upon the Throne of all thrones, with the entire cosmos flowing from his side, leaving him speechless in hope. John proclaims, ‘In that day you shall know that I Am in My Father, and

you in Me, and I in you,’ as the secret of all waiting to be discovered.

Also by Baxter Kruger is The Great Dance:

The Great Dance is astonishing vision of human life and the mystery of its intersection with the life of the Triune God.. Kruger charts a course from the Trinity to the incarnation to the union of our human existence as participation in the life of the Father, Son and Spirit. He uncovers the

untold dignity of our ordinary humanity--from motherhood to baseball, from relationships and music to golf, gardening and designing lakes. This is a book about who we are and why we are here and what is really happening in our lives Kruger walks us through the stratagems of evil and

the messes we make of our lives More important, he explains why we hurt, what we are really after and how to get there, and why faith in Jesus Christ is so critical for abundant life. The Great Dance is theology at its very best--steeped in tradition, yet unfamiliar and exciting, even revolu-tionary; deeply personal and honest, yet universally relevant. Written with pace and poetry and

winsome grace, The Great Dance is the voice of the ancient church speaking to us across the ages Lies

Resurrecting the Trinity: A Plea to Recover the Wonder and Meaning of the Triune God I will be self-promoting here. Several years ago I taught a six week adult Sunday School at my church—the topic was, the Trinity. I manuscripted my lectures, in case I ever wanted to do

anything with it in the future. A few years later one of my friends read the lectures, and asked if he could send them to a friend, who was a publisher. I agreed not expecting to hear much. A week later I got a phone call from the publisher asking if he could add the book to his catalog of

publications. I was stunned and excited. I had eventually wanted to get the work published but that a publisher would reach out to me after only a week was amazing. My title was Recovering the Forgotten Trinity, my publisher renamed it: Resurrecting the Trinity. (I like his title better.)
