Purpose: Conveying Water from a Source of Supply to Points of Use for Livestock, Wildlife, or Recreation.
Pipeline (516)
Most Pipelines in Indiana are to
provide water for grazing livestock
Pipeline Standard (516)
• Working pressure shall not exceed 72% of the pressure rating of the pipe
• Approved backflow device shall be installed if the pipeline may be used for human consumption
• Will be buried below frost line or protected from freezing
Pipeline Installation• Must be installed to the minimum depth specified
on the plans • Typically 24” to 36” depending on area of the state
• System shall be pressure tested at the designed working pressure for 2 hours
Pipeline Installation
• If limestone or large rock is encountered, the pipe may need bedding:
– Trench shall be undercut a minimum of 4 inches
– 4 inches of sand, compacted fine grain soils, crushed limestone (#11) or pea gravel
– Final backfill material shall be free of large rocks, frozen clods, and other debris greater than 3 inches in diameter
