History

• The history of Pondicherry dates back to Vedhic Period from the days of great sages like Agasthiya

• Excavations in Arikanmedu, Pondicherry reveals the roman trade relationship and the major port during the roman era.

• Pondicherry was part of the pallava, the chola and pandiya empires from 4th to 14th century, till it became the part of Vijayanagar empire.

History

• In 1521, the Portugese were the first Europeans to trade with Pondicherry. Then the Dutch and Danes followed the suit.

• The flourishing business attracted the French to have a settlement. It was French who developed a small fishing village into well planned port town.

• The 260 years of French connections has it’s strong cultural influence even today. Modern Pondicherry is a cosmopolitan town with well planned layouts, wide promenades, clean beaches and heritage.

French Connection

Indian People who opted for French citizenship as per Indo-French Treaty were allowed to reside within the Union Territory of Pondicherry. Nearly 10,000 French citizens live in Pondicherry

A separate polling ballot is maintained at French consulate for the French presidential elections.

Subsidies for Tourism

• Investment Subsidy: 20% of the total investment subject to a maximum of Rs.20 lakhs.

• Interest Subsidy: 5% in the rate of interest charged by Financial Institutions for loans for a period of 5 years, subject to a maximum of Rs.5 lakhs per year. 2% reduction in interest rate for the loans availed from PIPDIC.

• Registration Charges on Land and Building purchase will be refunded in full, 2 years after commencement of commercial activity.

• Town Planning Charges levied by the Town Planning Authorities for approving the building plans etc. will be reimbursed.

• Exemption from Luxury Tax for 7 years for 3 to 5 star Category.

Subsidies for Tourism

Incentives for Heritage Hotels & Buildings

Government seeks to encourage the use of listed heritage properties for use as hotels, pubs, boutiques.

Roof repairs and façade improvements upto 70% of the cost of work up a maximum of Rs.1.5 lakhs per building.

Removal and alterations of existing unsympathetic changes as pointed by the Competent Authorities, upto 70% of the cost of work upto a maximum of Rs.1 lakh per building.

Construction Subsidy for additional lettable rooms built with the conservation norms as laikd down by the Competent Authorities, at 20% of the building costs subject a to maximum of Rs.5 lakhs per building.
