1. SAFETY INFORMATIONThis service manual is intended for qualified service technicians ; it is not meant for the casual do-it-yourselfer. Qualified technicians have the necessary test equipment and tools, and have been trainedto properly and safely repair complex products such as those covered by this manual.Improperly performed repairs can adversely affect the safety and reliability of the product and mayvoid the warranty. If you are not qualified to perform the repair of this product properly and safely, youshould not risk trying to do so and refer the repair to a qualified service technician.

LASER DIODE CHARACTERISTICS•FOR DVD MAXIMUM OUTPUT POWER : 7 mW WAVELENGTH : 650 nm•FOR CD MAXIMUM OUTPUT POWER : 5 mW WAVELENGTH : 780-785 nm
(Printed on the Rear Panel)
Additional Laser Caution
1. Inside detection switch (S201 on the SMEB assy) and loading-status detection switch (S301 on the LOSB assy) are detectedby the microprocessor (IC501 in the DVDM assy).
• To permit the laser diode to oscillate, it is required to set theinside detection switch for the inside position (S201 : ON) and toset the loading-status detection switch for the clamp position (thecenter terminal of S301 is shorted to +5V). The 650 nm laserdiode for DVD oscillation will continue if pin 19 of IC101 is shortedto +5V (fault condition) in the DVDM assy. The 780 nm laser diode for CD oscillates if pin 20 of IC101 isshorted to +5V in the DVDM assy.In the test mode ∗ , the laser diode oscillates when microproces-sor detects a PLAY signal, or when the PLAY key is pressed(S113 ON in the FLKB assy), with the above requirements satis-fied.
2. When the cover is open, close viewing through the objective lenswith the naked eye will cause exposure to the laser beam.
∗ Refer to the service guide RRV2004.

Ex.2 When there are 3 effective digits (such as in high precision metal film resistors).

7.4 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION7.4.1 VIDEO SIGNAL PROCESSING BLOCK7 CXD1854Q BlockThe major processing functions of the CXD1854Q block are: (1) Field-correlative cyclic digital noise reduction (2) Block noise reduction (3) Horizontal contour compressionThese functions are performed for the Y signal and not performedfor the C signal.
(1) Field Correlative Cyclic Digital Noise ReductionFor eight-bit digital video data input to the CXD1854Q, noisereduction is achieved through the subtraction of data of one fieldfrom the corresponding data one field before. This data is stored ina buffer zone where the subtraction process takes place and thisbuffer zone is a 512Kbit DRAM.The noise signal detected as a result is sent to a non-linear circuit. Ifthe difference is larger than a specific value, it is regarded as “achange in picture,” and no canceling calculation is made.
(2) Block Noise ReductionThe Horizontal Block Noise components in the field which aregenerated through DCT for the MPEG encoding are rejected. They are detected through comparing input data between blocks. The noise signal detected as a result is sent to a non-linear circuit. Ifthe difference is larger than a specific value, it is regarded as “achange in picture,” and no canceling calculation is made.
(3) Horizontal Contour CompensationsThis is performed by emphasizing components in the region of2.3MHz.
7 MC44724A BlockThe digital video encoder MC44724A changes the digital componentsignals to analog video signals (Y signal, C signal, R signal, G signaland B signal). It is added the digital video encoder for the digital processing ofCXD1854Q.
