Over the years, the PINTAR programme has grown and has seen increased interest and participation from corporate companies. From an initial 96 schools adopted by 13 PINTAR pioneer members comprising GLCs back in 2007, there are now 297 schools adopted by 35 PINTAR members and partners who are GLCs and non-GLCs. These corporate companies work hand in hand with the Foundation to develop and implement enriching programmes based on PINTAR’s four core modules to address the needs of their respective adopted schools. The programmes are designed to motivate young Malaysians to excel in education, and nurture them to become well-rounded individuals and responsible citizens.

On behalf of PINTAR Foundation, I am proud to inform that the support and commitment by our members and partners have greatly contributed towards the success of the PINTAR Programme. Over the years, PINTAR students have produced improved results in major examinations such as UPSR and PMR; as seen in the video earlier. These achievements would not have been possible if not for the combined effort and dedication by PINTAR members and their schools.

Excerpt from the speech by Tan Sri Dato' Seri Arshad Ayub, Chairman, PINTAR Foundation Board of Trustees at the CEO Dinner on 15 May 2012.

Dear PINTAR readers,

PINTAR is proud to announce that from a bi-annual publication, PINTAR Voices is now a quarterly publication. PINTAR Voices has proven to be an invaluable communication medium for PINTAR to connect with its members, the school ecosystem – headmasters, teachers and students as well as the community. This quarterly publication is also an indication of the on-going support, commitment and dedication that you have given towards the PINTAR Programme; as together, hand-in-hand, we work to nurture and develop the human capital in Malaysia.

In this issue, we feature the activities and events that had happened from April until June 2012 - happenings that have directly or indirectly affected the lives of PINTAR students and teachers throughout the nation.

These include the Leadership Training for PINTAR School Leaders which has benefited our PINTAR school leaders; PINTAR National Programmes which have enabled our PINTAR students to gain invaluable knowledge through experiential learning and PINTAR members’ diverse activities which have impacted the students and teachers, to name a few.

Throughout these past few months, we witnessed how our PINTAR members as well as the PINTAR team have been putting in their utmost and on-going effort in shaping an inspired young generation and developing a group of able school leaders.

Henceforth, we look forward to welcoming more members and schools on board, more educational and beneficial activities that would be advantageous to PINTAR schools nationwide and of course, the continuous support from you to create a highly motivated and holistically educated future generation.

On 15 May 2012, a CEOs’ Dinner was organised by PINTAR Foundation at Bunga Emas Restaurant, Royale Chulan Hotel, hosted by PINTAR Foundation Chairman of Board of Trustees, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Arshad Ayub and graced by Tan Sri Nor Yakcop, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department. The dinner that was attended by some 50 guests included representatives from 13 PINTAR members and partners as well as the top management of potential corporate companies. The objective of the dinner was to re-engage top level management of existing members and corporates (as potential members) strategically as part of PINTAR Foundation’s three-year strategic plan under the Partner Programme. The occasion also provided the opportunity to update Tan Sri Nor Yakcop on the Foundation's progress and achievement as the PINTAR Program-me is his brainchild.

At the dinner, Tan Sri Arshad welcomed all guests and proceeded to update all present on the latest developments and achievements of the PINTAR Programme since it was first established in 2006. A corporate video was also played to give further insights and understanding on the PINTAR platform. Tan Sri Nor Yakcop, in turn, gave a moving speech about social inequality and urged members and corporates to join the PINTAR Programme as a quest to balance out the odds for the underserved communities. During the dinner, PINTAR members were presented with plaques as a show of PINTAR Foundation’s appreciation towards their support and commitment to the PINTAR Programme.

PINTAR CEOs’ Dinner was a successful event as we had a good turnout and positive feedback from our members and guests. We are grateful to Top Glove who generously donated RM10,000 to PINTAR Foundation and to I & P who pledged to adopt 8 new schools in 2012.

We look forward to more participation by members in our future events and to welcoming new members on board.

Media visit is part of PINTAR’s initiative to help increase the publicity for PINTAR programme by building rapport with the Editors from the local media. PINTAR Foundation organised media visits to three organisations over the last several months. These form part of the Foundation’s efforts to introduce the media to PINTAR Foundation and its members, activities carried out as well as to forge rapport and garner positive editorial publicity whilst exploring potential strategic collaborations with media partners. During the visits, editors were given insights on the background of PINTAR Foundation, its National Programmes and PINTAR Members’ activities.

The media visit to Balai Berita on 25th April led by PINTAR Foundation Management team was joined by Sabri Ab Rahman, Member on PINTAR Foundation’s Board of Trustees; as well as representatives from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, who met with Executive News and Education Editors from New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro as well as Group Chief Editor of Berita Harian, Datuk Mior Kamarul Shahid.

The Leadership Training for PINTAR School Leaders (LTPSL) Phase 2 was organised by PINTAR Foundation and held at the Grand Season Hotel, KL on 21 to 23 May 2012. Led by BOT members, Datuk Mary Yap and Datuk Denison Jayasooria , as trainers and advisors, the programme was participated by 25 schools and 50 school leaders from all over West Malaysia.

In Phase 1, held in Nov 2011, attending school leaders were exposed to various theories and tips on leadership which was later implemented by these school leaders in their schools. During the interim period between the Phase 1 and Phase 2 workshop sessions, PINTAR visited several schools to monitor and understand their implementation better as well as capture the effectiveness of the programme. In the workshop held in May, school leaders presented their “stories” and shared their experience - successes and difficulties faced with others.

A 360 degree monitoring system was developed by the team and guided by Datuk Denison to cover several perspectives of this programme:

Since the programme was implemented by the school leaders, there is an evident change in the management as well as administration in these schools. The acceptance of school leaders towards the essence of the programme was overall satisfactory.

Through feedbacks received from the school leaders, we are encouraged that the PINTAR Leadership Program 2011 has led to a paradigm shift in school management. The next Leadership Training for PINTAR School Leaders (LTPSL), Batch 2, is expected to be held in October 2012.

By inculcating a healthy respect for our environment from a young age, the PINTAR Go Green School Programme aims to develop a generation that will adopt responsible lifestyles and attitudes towards the conservation of our environment.

The programme fosters the ROSE concept (reduce, offset, substitute and enhance) and environmental stewardship in students as part of PINTAR Foundation’s initiative to promote behavioural change and attitude of individuals towards the environment.

Throughout the months of Apr-June, the PF team together with UKM facilitators conducted 24 school workshops in PINTAR schools around KL, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Students learnt about the impact of climate change and how they can make a difference; making instruments to measure rainfall using recycled materials, doing eco-art and had fun learning the Go Green Song and Cheer. Students were given a Folio to record their daily carbon saving efforts over 1 month, which will culminate in a school competition.

A total of 845 students and 36 teachers participated in the programme.

The PINTAR BattleBot Challenge (PBBC) is a robotic competition among PINTAR students aged 9-12 years old using LEGO technology. Contestants for the challenge will design and build a robust BattleBot vehicle using LEGO parts and pieces to withstand challenges from other bots.

Throughout the months of Apr-June, the PBBC team has completed the School Level Challenge in 65 schools around Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak, Kedah and Perlis. A total of 2,016 students and 132 teachers participated in the challenge.

The East Malaysia school level challenge which started in April saw a total of 224 students in the region competing among their school peers to qualify to represent their schools at Zone level. On 2nd – 3rd May ’12, the programme held its 1st Zone Level for East Malaysia Zone where eight teams from Sabah and Sarawak schools participated in the challenge at Celyn Hotel City Mall, Kota Kinabalu. A new challenge called, “Task-Based Challenge” was introduced at this level for the first time. In this challenge, participants are required to design and build a robot that can transport balls from a particular box into a collection box. Participants use the same chassis as per BattleBot Challenge; with the exception of the bumper which is designed to carry, push and pull balls into the collection box. The Bot is controlled via a remote control and teams are given 2 minutes to move as many balls as possible.

A total of 11 teachers attended the final round and closing ceremony of the Zone Level competition that was witnessed by Dikin Hj Nusa, Assistant Director, School Management Division of Sabah State Education Department, Ismail Matali, Guru Besar of SK Nyaris – Nyaris, Bongawan, Sabah and Daipin Rampot, Guru Besar of SK Ulu Lumagar, Papar, Sabah.

The English Literacy Programme Sponsored by UEM Group Berhad (ELP) is an English literacy programme for its 50 PINTAR schools that focuses on strengthening English teaching and learning through capacity building, using a variety of methods which include: quality delivery structures; supportive intervention; student activities and community involvement to help enhance and develop students’ reading, writing, understanding, and speaking skills in English.

The ELP is essentially a teacher development programme to improve teachers’ ability to teach English in a manner that will help enhance the way students learn the language and ultimately to be able to speak and write in English. The programme takes on a holistic approach and includes activities involving students, parents/community and volunteers from participating UEM Group companies.

Following the launch of the programme in late March 2012, the programme kicked off on 26 April with a Briefing to participating schools’ headmasters. Held at Plaza Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, the session was to introduce the Programme to the schools as well as to get the participants’ buy-in for the success of the Programme. The briefing was led by Karimah Tan Abdullah, Programme Director of PINTAR Foundation; Caspar Mays, Project Manager, British Council, and Nadia Hanafiah, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, UEM Group Berhad; and assisted by Adam Jameson and Dan Cornelius, Teacher Development Trainer & Mentors, British Council.

The participants were briefed on the background of UEM, PINTAR Foundation and British Council to give them a better understanding of these organisations before being introduced to the project itself. Following that, riefings to teachers involved in the ELP were organised. A total of 9 briefing sessions to the ELP teachers were conducted at the state level in May and June 2012. Apart from introducing the Programme to the participants (which included the ELP teachers and in some cases, accompanied by their Guru Besar or Penolong Kanan), the sessions which were also participated by the respective State Education Department/Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri (JPN) and District Offices/Pejabat Pelajaran Daerah (PPD) representatives, was seen as a platform for PINTAR Foundation to brief JPN and PPD on the Programme to be conducted as well as to iron out issues that may arise when dealing with teachers in the future, in particular such as getting approval for teachers to travel and attend training sessions out of their residing state and commitment from the nominated teachers to stay throughout the duration of the 3-year Programme.

The roadshow briefings were led by Karimah Tan Abdullah, Programme Director of PINTAR Foundation; Nadia Hanafiah/Nik Salwani Abdul Ghani, UEM Group Berhad; and Adam Jameson and Dan Cornelius, Teacher Development Trainer & Mentors, British Council.

All clusters have now been briefed and the collection of data from initial mentee needs analyses will feed into the overall project needs analysis and inform content of individual mentee work plans and future cluster level training.

Following the initial teachers’ briefing, the first training - ‘Most Significant Change (MSC) Training’ for Teachers was organised. MSC involves the collection and systematic participatory interpretation of stories of significant change. Unlike conventional approaches to monitoring, MSC does not employ quantitative indicators, but is a qualitative approach. The `MSC training for Teachers’ is a one-day course to train and guide participants on the technique to form continuous values whereby ELP teachers are to search for significant programme or teaching outcomes and then deliberate on the value of these outcomes in a systematic and transparent manner.

A total of four MSC training sessions were successfully conducted throughout the months of May and June 2012, involving schools located in the Northern region (Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis).

The teachers also suggested that more areas such as ‘time management’ and ‘people handling skills’ be introduced in future workshops as they feel that such challenges are becoming more pertinent in their daily work.

Volunteers from MAS Academy, MASenidaya, Pilot, Cabin Crew and Engineering gathered at three schools, SJK(Cina) Pei Cheng, Chemor, Perak; SJK (Tamil) Klebang, Kuala Kangsar, Perak and SK Manjoi Dua, Manjoi, Perak for MAS/PINTAR MH Day. The team visited each school on three different days starting from 26 to 28 April 2012.

Manager External Relations & Stakeholder Management, Lokman Hj Ishak said during his opening speech, the programmes are part of Malaysia Airlines corporate social responsibility and noble initiative to expose and encourage students in terms of self-development, creative thinking and to boost their innovative minds. At the same time, the programme aimed to showcase “Our Malaysia Airlines Heros for the Community” with participation from all staff.

Various programs were held at the school such as career and motivational talks by Tahah Siraj from Engineering, IFE Kamaruzaman and IFS Cecelia from Cabin Crew and Capt. Meor Adlan. In addition, Maheswary from Malaysia Airlines Academy captivated students and teachers with his talk on ‘communication skills for students’ and ‘grooming for school teachers’.

The students’ interest in music was encouraged through a ‘music sharing educational insights’ by Azman Ismail and Ezafel Ezudin from MASenidaya. The students were taught how to play the ‘kompang’ (Malaysian hand drum).

On the last day, the team went to SK Manjoi Dua. Together with the teachers and students, the Malaysia Airlines team participated in a ‘gotong royong’ to help repaint the school gazebo and mural painting at the school front building.

The programs were well received by all schools as MAS/PINTAR programs contribute to the success of the school. During the closing speech at SK Manjoi Dua, Lokman Hj Ishak said that the MH-PINTAR Day is a platform to build relationship and foster interaction between Malaysia Airlines, its PINTAR students and the community.

Technip organised a two-day Dance and Acting workshop for the Standards 5 and 6 students of its adopted school, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ulu Lumagar, Bongawan, Sabah recently on 14 - 15 June, 2012. The school is located about 90km from Kota Kinabalu, in the middle of an oil palm estate.

Held at the Total Enrichment Centre in Kota Kinabalu, the workshop was aimed at increasing the interest in and improving the use of the English language through the performing arts. Another objective was to build self-confidence and encourage creativity and imagination of the children.

Divided into two groups, the 17 children underwent speech, drama and musical theatre coaching to prepare them for their performance on the second day, which featured a dance, Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us”, a play “The Gingerbread Boy Story” and a musical theatre “The Lion King”. Each group was encouraged to provide their own interpretation and ideas for these acts. It was evident that the children had let their imagination soar as each act was the same and yet different in presentation. They performed with gusto, played their roles with joy and delivered their lines confidently. And indeed it was heartwarming to see their eagerness to participate and their determination to do their best, as exemplified by a gutsy participant, Mohd Azahari, who in spite of feeling unwell and was told to rest, quickly responded by saying, “Jangan ubah program, teruskan.” (“Do not change the program, please proceed.”)

As an extra treat, the children watched a movie, “Madagascar 3”, at the Suria Sabah mall and were entertained by a magician at the training centre.

It was the students’ first time away from their families for an extended period of time and understandably there were anxious parents and homesick children. However, the beaming faces of the children when they received their certificates of participation at the end of the workshop definitely showed a great sense of accomplishment in them. No doubt the parents will be proud of their children’s achievement. In all, it was an enriching experience for the students.
