Details are important: Hand-picked British goodies arranged into baskets for raffle prizes, some carefully wrapped and brought back in hand luggage from the UK; home-made gravy cooked by one of our organizers and delivered to the Club earlier that day; Union Jack bunting (decorative flaggarlands) air-mailed to an Expat family in Katy by relatives in the UK and custom-ordered cakes displaying photographic images of Buckingham Palace and Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty and two Royal Corgies, resplendent and bejeweled, were standing on display at the top of the staircase as if poised to greet and welcome arriving guests and every table bore the title and photograph of a Royal Property surrounded by candles, confetti and balloons. Congratulations samuel luna, ‘Champion of Change’

Samuel Luna was recognized at the White House on May 24, 2012 for his volunteer services to help fellow veterans. Sam’s award “Vietnam Veterans Champion of Change,” is part of President Obama’s “Winning the Future” initiative (whitehouse.gov/champions). Individuals within the veterans community were honored, es-pecially those who served in Vietnam and have shown continued support for efforts to end veterans homelessness, boost veterans employment, treat problems with substance abuse and develop treatment programs for those dealing with Post Traumatic Stress.

Sam Luna, a Vietnam Veteran, is Founder of Vets’ Journey Home Texas, Inc., which is a non-profit organization that provides a week-end retreats at no cost to veterans and active duty military personnel. The weekend is a safe place where the participants can come to learn about what their war experience did to their body. They learn the role that experience continues to play in their daily lives and in their quest to co-exist peacefully. With the help of trained facilita-tors, in the sharing of their stories they are safely guided to release emotions. There is also a retreat for veterans and their spouses. Mr.

Luna is the Chapter Service Officer for four veteran organizations in the Katy, Texas area where he helps veterans navigate the Veterans Administration to obtain medical care and compensation. With the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9182, Sam also serves on the Color Guard assisting with burial detail. He is the Department of Texas Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart and serves on the board of Spaulding for Children, a special needs adoption agency. Sam is a retired Supervising United States Probation Officer. He is often called upon to speak about his work, especially to share his knowledge of Post Traumatic Stress (PTS). Samuel Luna was honored as a White House Vietnam Veteran Champion of Change for his work to educate military veterans about Post Traumatic Stress.

Kyle designed and organized a landscaping restoration project for Woodsland Community REC Center in Old Katy and Daniel’s project included construction of planter boxes and outdoor patio furniture for the Willow Fork Volunteer Fire Depart-ment. As recipients of this prestigious rank, each has assumed a duty to serve God, country and his fellow man. All three scouts are graduates of Katy ISD - Class of 2012. In the fall, Thomas will attend Missouri University of Science & Technology, Kyle will attend Texas A&M University and Daniel will attend Purdue University.

MONTHLY HOA MEETING Make sure you know what is happening in the Pin Oak Village HOA meetings by attending. Meetings are held at 7:00 PM on the second Wednesday of each month. Be there and join these directors each month and be informed of money they are spending.

CLUBHOUSE RENTALSMartha Baxter is in charge of the clubhouse rentals. Pool rentals are still done through Michelle at Sweetwater Pool Company. There are still lots of good dates available for free clubhouse use. We would like to remind all residents that the clubhouse is for Members Only and must be current on all fees. Residents are limited to two free uses per year. There is a $100 DEPOSIT REQUIRED THAT WILL BE REFUNDED, IF THE CLUBHOUSE IS KEPT CLEAN. The clubhouse is also being reserved for possible holiday party use by the Board, for the benefit of Pin Oak Village residents. These parties will be scheduled soon, so watch for upcoming events at our website, www.pinoakvillagekaty.com.

To schedule lifeguards for any pool party, contact Michelle with Sweetwater pools at 281-300-6077. There is an additional form for Pool Rental, as well as cost, that must be filled out and paid prior to scheduling lifeguards. No pool party can be had without the ap-proval of Sweetwater and at least one additional guard.

Feel free to contact Martha at 281-392-8007. Martha’s address is 24606 Mt. Auburn Drive. Martha’s email address is as follows: [email protected].

Due to the many clubs and church groups that have reserved weekly dates being sought for by residents, the preference for use will be given to residents needs over weekly functions. Jeff will do his best to accommodate both weekly reservations and resident’s use.

STREETLIGHTSThe MUD taxes the residents pay help pay for the streetlights whether they work or not. If a streetlight is out or not working properly, please call 713-207-2222 and report the problem. Each pole has a number on it and you will need to give this number to the operator as well as the names of the closest streets. Last year we had a couple of lights

out and the result was vandalism to several mailboxes. We need

all lights working to keep our neighborhood safe. Thanks again to

the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD #37 for saving us

the cost of these lights.

TRASH PICKUP UPDATEThe correct contact for trash pickup for Pin Oak village is as follows:

Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD

#37 for saving us the cost of trash pickup. Our MUD directors are

saving us thousands of dollars by paying for the lights and trash

FoRT BEnD CoUnTy “LEASH LAw”Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property

to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and

inoculated as required by law.

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If

your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make ev-

ery effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your

dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and

your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone

while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area

ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their

property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained

and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the

property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs

do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained

animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected

wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing

the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in

our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS

The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should

that animal become lost. Licensing also:

VACCINATION

Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats

because they are an important control measure for the public health

threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations

provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon dry mustard

1/3 cup red wine vinegar

1 teaspoon onion juice

1 cup vegetable oil

1 tablespoon poppy seeds (optional)

1 cup sliced almonds

6 cups torn fresh spinach

1 quart strawberries, sliced

3 kiwifruit, peeled and sliced

3 cups chopped cooked chicken

Process first 5 ingredients in a blender until smooth, stopping once

to scrape down sides.

Turn blender on high and add vegetable oil in a slow, steady

stream. Pour mixture into a serving bowl and stir in poppy seeds,

if desired. Chill.

Bake almonds in a shallow pan at 350°, stirring occasionally,

5 to 10 minutes or until toasted.

Place torn spinach on individual serving plates; top with sliced straw-

berries, kiwifruit, chicken and toasted almonds. Serve with dressing.

Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Orange iCe Cream1 cup heavy cream 1 cup thin cream

2 cups orange juice Sugar (to taste)

Add cream slowly to orange juice, sweeten to taste and freeze.

Freeze for 1 1/2 hours. Remove and stir with a whisk. Return to

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION CHANGES FOR 2012 - 2013

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a change in the eligibility

requirements for students to receive transportation services. Starting

in August 2012, the eligibility for bus transportation will change from

the current 3/10 of a mile to approximately 1/2 mile for elemen-

tary students and approximately one mile for junior high and high

school students. Bus transportation will continue to be provided for

students for whom a hazardous condition may exist between home

and school, as well as special needs bus routes.

Approximately 52 bus routes (elementary and secondary) will be

eliminated, affecting approximately 6,600 students or nearly 21%

of the 32,000 students that ride school buses daily. The Katy ISD

Transportation Department began building bus routes in June and

will have specific routing information available for parents some-

time in August. The district will announce specific dates once they

become available.

The changes are the result of the Transportation Department experi-

encing particular challenges this year in having a sufficient number

of drivers available to meet daily transportation route requirements.

Due to vacant routes and driver absences, there have been days

in which the department has found it necessary to find drivers to

cover up to 46 routes. These changes will allow the district to better

meet route driver needs and will provide for more effective route

management, including driver training and driver support in issues

involving student management.

“The change in transportation services comes after extensive review

of our current transportation operations that not only revealed a

heavy burden for drivers covering multiple routes, but also a high

amount of uncertainty and risk due to vacant routes and driver ab-

sences,” said Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “In comparison

to other school districts, Katy ISD’s transportation eligibility distances

remain among the shortest in the Houston area as many districts

require students to live outside of a two mile radius.”

on each of their bowling teams; which areas currently have the most concentration of high school bowlers; how much are they currently paying for a participation fee and what are there averages, to name just a few. Each committee member was provided with a copy of Keith and Dominick’s presentation along with a brochure from USBC, which discusses a little more about High School bowling.

Karen Miller, the Executive Director of the Texas Bowling Centers Association, had also filed a proposal with the Texas U.I.L. to add bowling as a new U.I.L. sport and was also in attendance at the meeting as a representative of the Texas High School Bowling Club. She provided additional information to the Committee in response to some of the questions that were being asked of the youth bowlers.

The Texas U.I.L. Legislative Committee will reconvene in October and will vote at that time whether or not to pass bowling as a new U.I.L. sport. Let’s hope this will be the year. It’s been 75 years and it’s about time bowling gets state athletic association recognition in Texas.

“Hams”) creates an hour of musical entertainment for the residents. Our normal rehearsal/performing day is Monday morning. We will be starting rehearsals for our new singing season on Monday, August 6th, at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s UMC in Asbury Hall, 20775 Kingsland Blvd., Katy. We will have seven rehearsals before starting our new season. For additional information, please call Gail (Music Director) 281-347-0233, Bill (Scheduling and Administration) 281-347-2520 or Jackie (Historian and Chaplain) 281-347-1568.

deCIBeLLeS (A BArBerShOp ChOruS)We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass.

We rehearse Friday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus.

For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or [email protected] (email).

We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it.

Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in October and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any Friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented is an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting quality educational services for the gifted students in the school district. The mission of the organization is to promote community awareness of the unique social, emotional and intellectual needs of gifted and talented students and to support the development of appropriate educational services to meet these needs. To function successfully as an advocacy organization, KPGT needs mem-bership and volunteer support! Funded by membership dues, KPGT publishes a quarterly newsletter, “Connections” and is now on the web! KPGT advocates for the needs of our GT students by serving on district committees, panels at state GT conferences, the Parent Advisory Board and keeping abreast of legislative issues. KPGT works cooperatively with KISD to co-host events such as the very popular “Super Saturday” and the “Student Summer Scholarship Seminar.” Our non-profit organization offers summer scholarships and grants for innovative programs to the GT teachers in KISD. Won’t you show your support of our efforts and join KPGT today? Visit our website at www.kpgt.org for a printable membership form.
