A Sisterly Message from the Basileus Greetings Sorors, I hope that you were safe and warm these past few days while we endured yet another winter storm after only two weeks of recovering from Winter Storm Leon. For those of you who lost power for several hours or a few days, I hope that not only has your power been restored, but your sense of safety and normalcy as well. February is heart and history month. I hope you take the time to spend quality time with your loved ones to let them know how much they mean to you! Happy Valentine’s Day! This is also the month that we celebrate innovative Black Americans who cemented footsteps in American History. In 1976, the informal expansion of Negro History Week to Black History Month was officially recognized by the U.S. government, as a part of the United States Bicentennial. President Gerald Ford urged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history. We honor all of our Black history makers…past, present, and future!!! Did you know that one woman dies every minute from heart disease? Black women suffer rates of heart disease twice as high as those among white women. Some of the factors that contribute to this disparity include higher rates of overweight and obesity, higher rates of elevated cholesterol levels and high blood pressure and limited awareness of our elevated risks. This is no longer a “man’s disease”, but it is a “silent killer” because it often has no symptoms or presents pain that is barely noticeable. Although chest pain is the symptom most commonly associated with a heart attack, women may have chest pain that is not the most prominent or troubling symptom or may not experience chest pain at all. Sorors, please educate yourselves and love your heart. Don’t forget to wear RED to chapter meeting in recognition of the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” initiative and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s commitment toward “Pink goes Red.” With Sisterly Love,

Soror Franka H. Young Basileus

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE

The love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay,

Love isn’t love until you give it away.

LOVE – LOVE LOVE

Yes, Sorors. February is indeed the Love Month and I love, I love, I LOVE a WHOLE LOT OF THINGS. I love the way Kappa Omega welcomes our visitors and embraces them warmly. I love the way our Initiative Chairpersons emcompass the vision and seek to make it a reality. I love the way Sorors responded to the Initiatives on Parade and signed up in large numbers to become new or returning members to our National Initiatives/Committees. I love the way Soror Sarah Williams decided to mentor Soror Tameka Dukes and Voila – OUTSTANDING EYL SUMMIT was the result. I love the way Soror LeShunder McQueen eased the worries of Soror Brenda Moss when Soror Brenda found herself incapacitated for a few weeks and unable to serve. I love the way Soror Melva Costen inspires us with meditative moments. I love the way Soror Antwoinette Burney, a recent graduate of Valdosta State University, has assumed the role of Epistoleus with much grace and sophistication. I love the way our Basileus, Soror Franka, is cognizant of our time and seeks to make every moment memorable. I love, I love, I love a whole lot of things. I love the way Soror Kimberly Alexander seeks to keep us healthy by exercising and eating nutritious foods. I love the way Soror Jan Hilliard is leading us with finesse to become outstanding leaders both in the Sorority and other Civic organizations. Yes, Sorors, I love Soror Tracy Rolle’s insistence on our becoming Economically Secure. I love having Soror Shelia Driver at the forefront of our involvement with Social Justice and Human Rights. I love how we all work together to ensure the successes that we continue to enjoy.

I love it that most of the Initiatives are beginning to prepare scrapbooks to be displayed at the South Atlantic Regional Conference. I love, I love, I love. I love a whole lot of things. I love that PINK is going RED this month at our February 15th. Chapter Meeting. We are wearing RED and we are each bringing $1 to donate to the American Heart Fund. I love that on Friday, February 21st. the Health Initiative is inviting us to Roc House Fitness and Spa for Women’s Only Event – 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (see Flyer).

February is traditionally thought of as the month of love and so I add my love note to each one of you, my dear Sorors.

LOVE is Patient, LOVE is Kind – I am Yours, and YOU are mine.

Love ya,

Soror Charlotte M. Atkins [email protected]

• Mae Austin • Antwoinette Burney • Monica Dukes • Monica Goolsby • Lynn Jones • Fredreca King • Tuwaner Lamar • Tracy Rolle • Sherry Ware

Please come prepared to submit names from the floor of our sorors who have NOT served as a Delegate within the last five years (5) and are financially active. The Nominating Committee is respectfully asking for fifteen (15) names from the floor during our February Chapter meeting to insure that we can successfully fill the nine (9) slots assigned to Kappa Omega, along with the three (3) automatic slots for our Basileus, Anti-Basileus & Grad-Advisor. During our Chapter Meeting in March, we will conduct our on-site electronic election of our '2014 certified Boule delegates.
