Excellence as Essence

We produce thought leaders to the nation. The Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) has been in the forefront in breeding such leaders with character and competence. They are equipped with cutting-edge knowledge and complementary skills needed to perform in both private and public sectors alike. In producing them with clarity and commitment, the PIM has always been a centre of excellence

in management education, with its wings spreading beyond Sri Lanka.

Excellence is all about being exceptionally good. When applied to enterprises, it involves exceptional achievements in a consistent manner. That’s what the PIM is proud of, especially being a self-financed, semi-autonomous public entity. Now the time has come to expand our reach, regionally and globally through research and teaching. The leadership of the PIM has been entrusted with another generation. Adhering to best practices with appropriate use of technology is the way forward in ensuring enhanced quality and relevance in all our initiatives. The PIM will continue to produce value in practising values, as the Nation’s School of Business.

We strive to continuously improve all our programmes. The EDPs we offer are of high calibre, catering for current industry requirements. They have become a vital link in our reach to the private/public community. With our valued partnerships, reputed resource personnel are richly available in sharing their rare expertise with the aspiring participants. We believe in facilitating holistic learning with quality and relevance. In doing so, we transform mere practitioners into mega professionals who will have global presence with local pulse. That’s why we offer an enriching learning experience that ignites human imagination.

The PIM, considers the preparation of a competency model as the initial step in formulating an organization’s EDP. Almost all the EDPs organized thus far by the Institute are customized based on specific requests of the client organizations.

Workshops provide the foundation for those in leadership positions to think, act and lead from the new management paradigm. Participants in the programme learn powerful concepts and tools to help them lead, support, and inspire a talented workforce.

The Learning Diary is a management technique adopted by the PIM in adult-

centred management development programmes. The central idea here is that it is only after convincing the participants

of the rationale of learning that an adult will decide to learn. In fact, self-regulated behaviour helps the learner become more

conscious of his or her learning. This process makes the participants recap what they have learnt in the sessions,

and spell out in a summary-form the key learning points they would gather, added

with their own experiences, additional reading plus applicability of knowledge

gathered in their work-environs.

The Post-EDP Review is yet another unique input the participants and their

organization need to fill after a particular EDP programme. Each such development programme is a new experience for all the

three parties, namely, (i) the trainee, (ii) the organization, and (iii) the resource

person. The objective is continuous improvement for the three parties in

their respective performances. It is synergy that produces optimum results

of training and development efforts. This system ensures that a continuous quality

improvement process is in place.

The PIM introduces an advanced programme in Strategic Management exclusively for Senior Managers with a three-pronged text-case-simulation course model which gives managers a significantly more leaning on application of key concepts of strategic management. Participants will be exposed to various challenges in implementing and executing strategy in an organization.

The programme will be delivered through regular lectures, classroom discussion on cases and a simulation over five days spread over 5-6 weeks of which two days will be held as residential workshops.

Management teams (6-8 teams) are taking over the operation of a company that is in a neck-and-neck race for global market leadership, competing against rival companies run by other class members for 7 years from year 6. Managers exercise control over production costs based on the designs and components they specify for their products, work force compensation and training, the length of warranties offered, the amount spent on technical support provided to buyers of the company’s products, and their management of the assembly process.

Company co-managers make 44 types of decisions each period, ranging from R&D, components and product performance (10 decisions); to production operations and worker compensation (15 decisions); to pricing and marketing (15 decisions); to the financing of company operations (4 decisions).

Management teams are challenged by developing a winning competitive strategy—one that capitalizes on growing consumer interest in respective products, keeps the company in the ranks of the industry leaders, and boosts the company’s earnings year on year. Management challenge is to stay afloat and gain competitive advantage, when pitted against the strategies of rival companies that prove capable of delivering good bottom-line results towards building shareholder value.

This unique programme allows managers to learn from each other, appreciates the relevance of each departmental function in relation to strategy, allows to craft and execute a strategy and understand the implications of decisions taken by managers’ towards the overall performance of the organization.
