37. Grossbahn knew Subject since beginning of World:War II. Grossbahn met himagain in Salzburg in the fall of 1947 and recruited him to submit personalityreports, sending him to Vienna for this purpoae. On 1 June 1948, Subjectwent to work in Grossbahn s s Salzburg office as an editor. (During thisperiod Grossbahn was working for ZIPPER).

38. Subject could be turned over at any time to an American. The introductioncould be made byGROSSBAHNI s wife, in case GROSSBAHNbdomelf were unavailable. 3

39. Originally Subject took up CROSSBAR:Ni s offer of work because offLnancialneed. He is definitely pro-Western and strongly Catholic. Re is probablyalso motivated by a hope for 'security in case of war.

40. RI and division files.

41. Subject would not want it known that for a long period of time he worked insecret intelligence.

42. Subject has independently come to the conclusion as to the correct identityof the service he is working for. Although this has not been confirmed tohim, he is convinced that his guess is correct.

43. Subject was a minor Nazi member in Vienna and possibly unkiawingly-was used assome type of informer. During the Aoschluss he became a member of the GermanForeign Office and in this capacity came in contact with both the SD and theAtmehr, although he was not a member of the latter organizations. From 1947through 1949 Subject worked for GRWSBAHN who was then working for ZIPPER.NO direct contacts with ZIPPER were noted at that time.

44. Subject started off with reports on personalities and developed a number ofinformant connections. Later he became German editor of reperting, mainlyin the political field. On the basis of his strong church connections hispress work, and former diplomatic assignment, Subject is a thorough experton personnel questions in South East Europe. His most premising possibilitieslie in the gradual development of new sources, especially in the politicalfield.

45. Not applicable

46. Has studied instruction material in GROSSEAHN's office, and otherwise haslearned from experience.

47. Subject is closely connected with Austrian leaders of Catholic Action; he is 1cultural counsel to Landeshauptmann Klaus; he has contacts with Archbishop iRohracher; he was a leader with the "Neuland" students group. Holds strong

-press connections, espeaally with the European Catholic press. Personallyacquainted with Willi HOUTZ. Handles CROSSBARS sub-source Anton FELLVER.

Page 8: PIM= MDR 4221110101=11 ANTON_0002.pdfCo-editor of and contributor to the symposium Katholischer Glau be und deutsches Volkstlim in Osterreich (Otto Miller Verlag). • (approx.1933),

48. Subject to be paid 4000 Austrian schillings monthly as salary, plus 200schillings for expenses. He is also provided with some PIC supplies whichhe paye for in Austrian schillings. He has an independent income, mainlyfrom press and radio work.

49. A commitment was made during the time Subject worked under GROSSBAHN forZipper that he and possibly—meMbers Of his family would be rescued in caseof war. This commitment is not considered binding by us.

50. Could pass as a native in either Austria or Germany.

51. Of middle class origin, but has developed into intellectual, circle of uppermiddle class.

52. Seems to be open to approach by attractive young girls. Does not indulgeheavily in alcohol, but under its influence in good company might lose someof his normally well guarded security. Can be approached by flattery, especially if given by a persons he considers superior. The female approachcontains certain dangers because he would probably under all circumstancestry to "save face".

53. Subject is ambitious but has a definite inferiority complex which he triceto cover up, sometimes by harshness and sometimes by a show of superiority. Is every hard worker when it pays or when he believes it is necessary. Undernormal circumstances is reliable, loyal and willing. GROSSBAHN considers thatSubject is at times timid because of concern for his personal security.

S. Subject feels closely linked to the Catholic Church. GROSSBAHN feels thatSubjeCt probably open to German approaches if not under a rather strong hand.

55. Subject is a clear thinker and writes extremely well. He is an expert photo-grapher. Be has slight skill as a radio operator. He is extremely learnedand has a good memory for details. A good negotiator if provided with detailedinstructions. Would hake a good high government official or Nationalrat(member of Parliament).

56.

57. Furnished by Subject

58. If a younger assistant could be found for GROSSBAHN as a replacement forSubject, Subject might be sent into party politics. In such an assignmenthe could be a good investigator and inforuant, provided he respected thecase officer running him.
