President’s Corner...
Dear Members,
The shared effort of our members’ enthusiasm has been the
cornerstone of Pilots For Kids suc-cess. Over the years, our
resourceful and creative members have come up with exceptional
ideas. A great example was created by our Dallas coordina-tor,
Captain John Elsey. Captain Elsey began an effort to hand out
restaurant gift cards to parents who seemed to be especially
stressed financially and emotionally. The gift cards afford the
parents an opportunity enjoy a quiet meal in a stress free
environment. The gesture is well received by par-ents and much
appreciated. To Captain Elsey and our other members who have shaped
our organization, we say “Thank you and keep your contributions
coming.”
With Appreciation, Ed Faath President, PFK

again this year at The Buffalo Rose. DEN PFK members held their
annual char-ity event. on October 16th. The all-day event included
4 bands, consisting of pilots, rampers, flight attendants, and
their friends/band members. The associated auction helps to raise
funds. Thanks to all who con-tinue to support this wonderful
event!

Giving from the HeartAbove, IND PFK members happily visit
children at three area children’s hospitals and two campuses of St.
Mary’s Child Care Center annually. The patient room above is an
example of the type of themed room that PFK hopes to pro-vide,
through your donations, at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.
A hospitalization is a frightening experience for many people -
but especially so for children. For this reason, Peyton Manning
Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent has created several themed
patient rooms to help make each patient’s environment as
child-friendly and uplifting as possible.
Pilots For Kids (PFK) is an international organization dedicated
to helping hospitalized children. Founded in 1983 by airline
crewmembers, the non-profit organi-zation’s primary activity is
visiting children’s hospi-tals and bringing toys and other needed
items to each child.
Indy Pilots for Kids is comprised of more than 135 professional
pilots who fly for every passenger airline which operates out of
IND International Airport, Fe-dEx pilots, corporate pilots,
military pilots and avia-tion enthusiasts from the Indy area. Each
year during the holiday season, uniformed crewmembers from Indy PFK
visit all three local area children’s hospitals and two campuses of
St. Mary’s Child Care Center for pre-shcool aged under privileged
children. Indy PFK members provide Christmas gifts for over 300
children every year who may need a distraction from their life’s
circumstances. Please join the Indianapolis Pilots For Kids Chapter
in raising funds to create an Airplane themed room at Peyton
Manning Childrens’s Hospital. You can make your tax-deductible
contri-bution at https://give.stvincent.org/airplaneroom. When
asked how you heard about the site, be sure it denotes “Pilots for
Kids Airplane Room.” For addi-tional information on how you can
help, please con-tact Captain Dan Ferracciolo, Indy PFK
Coordinator, 317-408-0267 or [email protected].

Pilots for Kids Award
To Bill Bella
Captain Bella started visiting children in hospitals in 1977.
Approximately two years after he moved to Houston, in 1994, he
joined the Houston Pilots For Kids organization. Every year during
the Holiday season for the past 22 years, Bill has been Santa to
hundreds of children at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. He
has been an integral part of Houston’s Pilots for Kids group over
these many years! Over that period of time, the Houston Pilots for
Kids group has grown tremendously. The group now has pilots from
United, Delta, American, Jet Blue and Express Jet. There are
generally 16-20 pilots per hospital visit, split into two groups,
visiting approximately 140 hospitalized children per visit. On some
visits, the PFK members are joined by a special guest, Clutch the
Bear, the NBA Team Mascot for the Houston Rockets.
For the past three years, Houston’s PFK members have added a
mid-year hospital visit to their activities when fewer groups tend
to visit children.
“Our last visit was comprised of several new Pilots for Kids,
who did an outstanding job bringing happiness and discussing the
children’s interests, hobbies and achieving their goals,” said
United Captain Bill Bella, Houston Pilots For Kids coordinator.
“Additionally, we had four Spanish-speaking pilots who assisted
us with the numerous Spanish-speaking children. We also had a
United pilot who spoke Hindi to three children! That was a first in
my 39 years of hospital visits.”
During each Hospital visit, each child is given a spe-cial gift
as a memory of the pilots’ visit. Bill says they have also
experienced medical miracles during their visits that have left a
lifetime of priceless memories for them.
This holiday season, the PFK group is going to offer two
hospital visits to accommodate their very large and dedicated
Houston Pilots For Kids group.
The Texas Children’s Hospital staff has often said, “The Houston
Pilots For Kids are one of our best and favorite groups that visit
the hospital.”
“We have had great support from the pilots, the air-lines,
Flight Operations management and chief pilots in the Houston area.
Our support is greatly appreciated by the children, their families
and the hospital staff. The hospital visits are a priceless gift of
happiness!I am honored and privileged to represent this wonder-ful
organization...The Houston Pilots For Kids.
Thank you,
Captain
Bella!
Thank you to Captain Bill Bella, the 2016 winner of the Pilots
for Kids Award. Cap-tain Bella has been involved with PFK for over
22 years.

On Sept 9th, the CMH PFK group was proud to host a
back-to-school celebration at the Columbus Home-less Families
Foundation. This was another success-ful event organized by the CMH
PFK group! As the photos above show, new shoes were a popular
item.
Back-to-School EventSponsored by PFK
It was a good day to play golf... in a muumuu. NJASAP in
Columbus was a proud participant in the 2016 Pilots For Kids Golf
Tournament. The event raised more than $6,000, which will be used
to support back-to-school and holiday gift initiatives.
Some of the results of their generous fundraising can be seen in
the photos of the “Back-to-School” event shown to the left.

In Memoryof HelenSammon
Ms. Helen Sammon took her last flight on March 5, 2016 to New
Horizons. Helen became a charter mem-ber of the Lake Erie Chapter
in January, 1974, and served as Treasurer, Vice Chairman and
Scrapbook Chairman for many years. She was also the 2014 Governor’s
Service Award winner and recieved the Pilot of the Year trophy in
1989 and 2016.
Helen was also one of the longest continuously serv-ing members
of the North Central and International 99s. She joined the
organization on January 31, 1950.
In 1952, she joined the All-Ohio Chapter and held many offices
including Chapter Chairman. She also served as Nominating Chairman
for North Central Section and served on the committee to read the
minutes at a 99s International Convention. While a member of the
All-Ohio Chapter, Helen assisted the Ohio Aviation Board in their
Air Marking program and received a citation from the Division of
Avia-tion C.E.A Brown. She also worked in Cleveland at the Formula
One Races (midget planes) as a scorer and timer. Additionally,
Helen served as a scorer in Toledo and a Chief Timer for the end of
the Air Race Classic in Cleveland in 1976.
One of the highlights of Helen’s flying was being able to
participate in many air races and to fly the All-Ohio Air Tour as a
co-pilot in a PT-19.
Helen was also a long-time member/supporter of Pi-lots for Kids.
Special wings for this lovely lady who has been so dedicated to
aviation for many years.
