Pier 20 Press Mrs. Jenkins’ Fifth Grade Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 31 April 20, 2015 From the teacher’s desk…. Thank you to ALL who completed the survey last week! And I do mean all . We had 100% participation from parents! This information is so incredibly helpful as we continually strive to make Canyon Rim Academy an excellent academic, social and emotional environment for your children. Students earned a free dress day from Miss Merry and homemade cookies from me for your help! Thank you!! As we round the corner to the end of the year (can you believe we only have seven weeks left?) it’s easy for all of us to feel the pull of the outdoors, the warmer weather, sports activities and the general spring fever that affects most of us – even me! However, as I urged your children, let’s stay focused to the end. I am so proud of this particular group of students. They have shown remarkable growth this year – both academically and socially. Again, please mark your calendars for our upcoming SAGE testing. As I stated before, it’s imperative that your student is in school these days; they do better when taking the test with their peers and we have limited time to make up the tests. Thank you !! May 5 Language Arts May 12 Math May 19 Science May 7 Language Arts May 14 Math May 21 Science Language Arts With our observance of National Poetry Month we will continue writing poetry this week. Students will have an opportunity to analyze another poem by Gary Soto, “Ode to Family Photographs” . In doing so, students will also have an opportunity to write an Ode to their own photographs. In preparation for this, please help students find a few photographs of them and your family when they were younger, taken at places and events that you remember fondly. Math Last week we finished, yes, FINISHED all new 5 th grade math material!! Your children have learned so much…..from fractions to volumes, they have certainly mastered many critical math skills. Kudos go out to Ethan, Benj, Lily, James, Tala, Ali, and Landon for earning a 4 on a very challenging test on geometry, including volume. We will now begin reviewing the entire year’s math curriculum as we prepare for the SAGE testing. Students will review one chapter a day for the next 2-3 weeks. Following the SAGE testing we’ll begin a preview of 6 th grade math! Happy Spring!

Science and Social Studies We had a surprise guest last week….Mr. Jenkins visited our class to demonstrate how magnets are used in electric guitars, amplifiers, and speakers. It became a mildly raucous! Serendipity shined upon us that day as three of our students had their guitars here to practice for the upcoming talent program. Thus, Gwen, Ashton, and Aiden had a chance to play a duet with Mr. Jenkins!! Following the Revolutionary War the colonists and our Founding Fathers faced the challenge of beginning a new nation. They worked long and hard on the U.S. Constitution, a document that continues, these many years, to be the glue that holds our country together. Our Constitution study will also include study of the three branches of government.
