Pieces of the Puzzle Globetrotter
Series92rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Welcome to China! Well, at least to the China Lapbook!
Start by getting your materials ready. You’ll need a file folder or a
large sturdy paper to use as your book. You will also need scissors, glue,
tape (if you like), a stapler, and something to write and color with. Take
your folder or paper and fold the short sides into the middle as shown below.
Take a look through these pages before you begin to get an idea of
what you’ll need to do. Don’t miss the additional notes, money math and
Bible connection!
You’ll see below an example of how to assemble your lapbook. One
thing not shown below is to take the whole “Additional Notes” page and
attach it to the back of your lapbook. This way you have all your China info
in one place.

Cut out each piece separately and attach
in chronological order to the timeline.
The first book mentioning
tangrams was printed in
China in 1813, but many
believe the design is
ancient.
Cut out word box separately. The
rest cut out as one piece. Fold the
top rectangle forward. Fold side
flaps around that flap and attach
to make pocket. (So the flaps are
on the same side of the paper as
the picture.) Fold down tangram
picture flap to make the cover.
(Now the little side flaps are on
the back and the picture is on the
front.) Lift the flap and attach the
word box inside.

• Chinese people will never say yes the first time. If
they are offered something, they will say no. They
will be encouraged to take it three or four times
before they are willing to take it.
• When a gift is received, it is not opened right
away. Instead, it is set aside and opened later in
private.
• If you walk through their door, a Chinese person
will offer you something to eat or drink. If they run
into you on the street on their way home from the
market, they will offer you something from their
bag, usually fruit.
• Chinese people love to talk loudly in restaurants
and they drop food and napkins all over the floor.
It m
akes a big m
ess, but whoever cleans up does
so with patience and grace.
Additional Notes:
• A good thing to remember if you ever have guests from a foreign
country is that in many places around the world it is normal and polite
to say no when offered something, even if you really want it. You
need to basically push it on them over and over repeatedly to get them
to take it. There have been many hungry foreign visitors to America
who turned down the food offered them.
• You may notice there are beer cans in the food picture. These are
pictures taken in China. It is a drinking culture. Men especially are
trained young to be able to hold their alcohol.
• Dumplings seem to be a celebration food. Everyone gathers and
works all day to make tons of them.

Money Math:
6.83 Chinese yuan = 1 dollar
If I bought 5 dollars worth of toys in China, how many yuan do I need to pay
for it?
If I bought 2 dollars with of food in China and paid with 15 yuan, how much
change would I get back?
Bible Connection:
Read a great biography of a missionary to China--try Hudson Taylor or
Gladys Aylward. They were in China before missionaries were kicked out
in 1954 under the Communists who came to power in 1949. While the
missionaries were gone, the church thrived underground. Nothing like
persecution to separate the wheat from the tares and allow for real growth!
Recipe: Szechuan green beans: sauté the green beans in a little hot oil, remove from pan when
done—they should pucker a little. Put in a bit more oil and add chopped onion, garlic, 1 t.
salt and sugar, 1 T. soy sauce—cook a bit. Add the beans back in and mix.
